  1. I can understand demolishing homes in places like Cleveland, where much of the housing stock is made of up cheap, wood frame structures. But I question the long term effectiveness of demolishing brick row homes. It seems like those, more than the houses in Cleveland, would be more attractive for future redevelopment.
  2. I'm curious if Happy Dog will incorporate the customization aspect, which is what they're well known for. Barrio is the same way, but they only have pre selected taco options at the ballpark location
  3. And that has been quite an issue for many people in New York in recent years. I wouldn't be surprised if Cleveland were on the more extreme end in terms of design review. We are insular by nature, but have been quite conservative in terms of architecture throughout our entire history.

So, it's actually in New Orleans huh? How'd you figure that out, KJP?

How about we just institute term limits for City Council instead? Cleveland City Council president proposes increased caps for campaign contributions By Leila Atassi, cleveland.com on January 25, 2016 at 9:27 PM, updated January 25, 2016 at 9:28 PM CLEVELAND, Ohio -- Cleveland City Council President Kevin Kelley wants to increase the city's caps on campaign contributions, in the hope that doing so would help challengers run more robust campaigns against incumbents with big war chests. Kelley introduced legislation Monday night that would limit contributions to mayoral candidates -- either from individuals or political action committees -- to $10,000 per calendar year. That's up from maximums of $1,000 per individual and $2,000 per PAC set by ordinance in 1994. http://www.cleveland.com/cityhall/index.ssf/2016/01/cleveland_city_council_preside_6.html
  6. Hotel occupancy climbs in Cleveland, but will glut of new rooms outpace demand in 2016? By Susan Glaser, The Plain Dealer on January 25, 2016 at 3:17 PM, updated January 25, 2016 at 4:36 PM CLEVELAND, Ohio – Hotel occupancy in 2015 climbed nearly 2 percent in Cleveland, a hike experts say is fueled by a growing tourism industry and a convention center that is steadily attracting new business. But there is some concern about whether that occupancy growth can be sustained in 2016 – despite the Republican National Convention -- because Greater Cleveland is due to add 10 new hotels with more than 1,800 new rooms in the next year. http://www.cleveland.com/travel/index.ssf/2016/01/hotel_occupancy_climbs_in_clev.html

Neat series from Jordan Bastian talking about preserving artifacts from Indians' history. I wish we had an Indians museum at Progressive Field similar to that of the Cincinnati Reds http://m.indians.mlb.com/news/article/162208070/indians-aggressive-in-preserving-team-history
  8. You see development similar to University Square all over the place in DC, for example, but yes, the difference is they are all integrated with transit and/or are located in highly walkable areas.
  9. ^ There are plenty of examples across the country to see how the police would operate. It makes sense to have one police force for the entire county rather than have dozens with such small jurisdictions. And then we can finally get rid of Linndale!
  10. I remember it from over the summer, but then it was lifted for a while and I've only just recently noticed that it's back
  11. The slow zone on the Red Line westbound track between W 25 and W 65 is brutal. Did RTA ever make an announcement about that going into effect? I can't remember, have slow zones previously been listed on "service alerts" on the front page of the website? I think they should. (Not to mention that operators should be making announcements when entering the slow zone informing the riders why the train is just barely crawling along)
  12. McDonald's is now officially closed.

  14. Don't forget University Circle haha. What a nightmare. That's one of the easier ones I'd say. Just head straight down Euclid from downtown and you're there. Now, as for getting around the neighborhood, yeah, not as easy.
  15. Agreed. I'm still holding out hope the Dual Hub plan will come to fruition at some point in my lifetime.

YES. I've been saying this for years. Even Detroit has a new spiffy website: http://www.detroitmi.gov/

WMATA says they are unable to operate Metro when snow exceeds eight inches (IIRC) because it covers the third rail. During the blizzards in 2010, they closed just the above ground sections of the Metro but still ran service underground. I was perplexed as to why they're closing the whole system this time. I saw on Twitter there are concerns about power failure. With all of WMATA's safety incidents over the last few years, I guess they're just trying to play it safe?
  19. I'd say that's accurate. You'll find the more ornate residential architecture in neighborhoods like Ohio City, here and there in Tremont, a small amount in Brooklyn Centre, and a few others. Unfortunately, our best residential areas on the east side of Cleveland, especially on Euclid and Prospect, that would have rivaled parts of Columbus and Cincinnati in beauty were completely wiped out. Edit: To take this further off topic, but gives me an idea: has anyone ever written a comprehensive piece on the history of residential architecture in Cleveland? It would be interesting to see why certain housing exists in certain areas and what the ages of houses are in different neighborhoods. If not, it seems like it would be a fun thing for some of us to take on.

WMATA is shutting down the Metro and bus service in DC for the weekend due to the impending snow storm http://www.nbcwashington.com/news/local/Metro-Close-Weather-Snow-Blizzard-Plans-Bus-Train-366104811.html
  21. ^ I hate to say it, but ColDayMan is right. The inner, core neighborhoods of Columbus are better than anything in Cleveland, imo. They are all in close proximity to each other and are much more intact than most of Cleveland's neighborhoods. Not to mention, the residential architecture in places like German Village and Victorian Village can't be matched in Cleveland. It took me a while to admit that to myself.

That's pretty crazy. I've seen a lot of talk making fun of DC drivers and how they can't handle the snow (which isn't untrue btw), but in this case it sounds like the roads were really awful and the conditions would have probably even caused havoc in Buffalo

I survived Snowmageddon parts 1 & 2 in '09/'10. With the Metro not running above ground, we couldn't go anywhere. I never thought I would get tired of drinking and watching movies, but it didn't take long... Best of luck down there. I'm kind of jealous This has been making the rounds on DC social media. It's from yesterday's evening commute...due to 1 inch of snow
  24. I go to Columbus for Buckeyes games, that's about it But I would probably go down to Cbus more if there were a direct rail connection from Cleveland that could take me right downtown
  25. This isn't the appropriate thread for this, so feel free to put the answer in another thread, but what's the full backstory with the decision for Progressive to not build in downtown Cleveland? I have heard bits and pieces about a falling out between the leadership of the city and Progressive, but don't know the whole story.
