  1. 2017 deadline helps Cuyahoga County attract more contractors to compete on lakefront bridge contract By Steven Litt, The Plain Dealer Follow on Twitter on July 14, 2015 at 11:10 AM, updated July 14, 2015 at 12:54 PM CLEVELAND, Ohio –Cuyahoga County's second attempt to seek bids on a lakefront pedestrian bridge is attracting more interest from potential contractors, thanks to a deadline extension from 2016 to 2017. Representatives of more than a dozen engineering and construction companies showed up Monday for a briefing on how to bid on the contract to build an iconic lakefront pedestrian bridge from the Mall to North Coast Harbor that could cost $25 million or more. The response was far stronger than the original attempt by Cuyahoga County's Department of Public Works to elicit interest in the project last year, when it announced it wanted to finish the project in time for the Republican National Convention in 2016. http://www.cleveland.com/architecture/index.ssf/2015/07/2017_deadline_helps_cuyahoga_c.html

You have to keep in mind the size of the LA market. Even if only 20% of the people in the LA CSA are "football fans," the number of people that includes is the entire population of the Cleveland/Akron CSA.
  4. Just came across that yesterday on Craigslist: http://cleveland.craigslist.org/fbh/5121140700.html

Not until there is a memorandum of understanding (or even a legal agreement) between all cities, counties, and states in the country to not use public financing for stadiums. Cities can complain about it all they want, but as long as there is one other city out there willing to fork over public money to entice a team to relocate, it's going to continue being an issue.
  6. Today's Cleveland.com "Mall Mondays" article is about Tower City. This is a pretty bad article, and includes a number of factual errors, but I thought I'd post it anyways. By Brenda Cain, Northeast Ohio Media Group Email the author | Follow on Twitter on July 13, 2015 at 8:00 AM, updated July 13, 2015 at 8:22 AM CLEVELAND, Ohio – When it opened in 1990, The Avenue at Tower City Center was home to high-end retailers such as Barney's of New York, Fendi, Gucci, and Versace. The mall had a letter of intent from Neiman Marcus to build a 120,000-square-foot anchor store. It was a destination – stunning architecture, a dancing fountain and three stories of marquis stores impossible to find in suburban malls. Now, 25 years later, storefronts are vacant, or filled with local retailers and a dollar store, aside from a few better-known holdouts like Brooks Brothers. http://www.cleveland.com/metro/index.ssf/2015/07/tower_city_the_avenue_-_mall_m.html
  7. This was one of the pictures on the planning commission website from last summer when FWD was approved. Would lead me to believe that they won't be painted? Edit: But all the renderings for the project seem to indicate one color, so idk. http://planning.city.cleveland.oh.us/designreview/drcagenda/2014/07182014/index.php
  8. Cleveland Landmarks Commission votes to allow demolition of Wirth House in Brooklyn Centre By Steven Litt, The Plain Dealer on July 10, 2015 at 8:15 AM, updated July 10, 2015 at 8:33 AM CLEVELAND, Ohio – Wirth House, a decaying 19th-century landmark owned by the nonprofit Art House Inc. in Brooklyn Centre, finally appears headed for demolition after 14 years of debate over whether to keep or toss it. In split votes on Thursday, the Cleveland Landmarks Commission approved demolition of the house, located at 3119 Denison Ave., and a neighboring vintage house next door at 3201 Denison. The demolition of Wirth House requires a review carried out by the city for the federal government because federal community block grant dollars given to Art House would be used for the demolition. Such "Section 106" reviews can take up to a year. http://www.cleveland.com/architecture/index.ssf/2015/07/cleveland_landmarks_commission.html

  11. More insular thinking here on the North Coast... Open Container Districts: Not As Big A Priority In Cleveland As In Other Parts Of Ohio? Thursday, July 2, 2015 at 3:28 pm Under a recently-approved bill, Ohioans can openly carry beer and other alcoholic drinks in designated sites outdoors. Depending on size, a city can have one or two areas exempt from the state’s containment law, with the idea of creating entertainment districts similar to New Orlean’s Bourbon Street or Beale Street in Memphis, Tennessee. But as ideastream’s Brian Bull reports, the news is being met with some hesitation in Cleveland. http://wcpn.ideastream.org/news/open-container-districts-not-big-priority-cleveland-other-parts-ohio

Hmm, is that why they're selling out music venues all across the country?
  13. I believe the ship on the far right is the Spliethoff ship that's part of the Cleveland - Europe Express. It's hard to tell which one though, perhaps the Floragracht?
  14. ^ I would say One Cleveland Center, based upon the height and the angle. Edit: Didn't see Urbanophile[/member] beat me to it

^ Expect more of the same offense tonight too as we go against one of the best pitchers in MLB, Dallas Keuchel
  16. Guess I'm not the only one. That's a heavy traffic area, or at least it should be. It might be kind of uncomfortable for most people to sit that close to an active sidewalk, and there's the issue of beggars and potential crime. If it's a public sidewalk, can they run off panhandlers who camp right there? Beggars and potential crime? I go to Heinen's usually 3-4 times per week and and have only encountered a beggar around there two or three times. And what kind of potential crime do you speak of?
  17. Nights like tonight really make me love this town (not that I don't always love it). Seeing tens of thousands of people come downtown to watch one of the world's greatest orchestras celebrate our country. It gave me the feels to see the Mall activated like that, as it should be. I love Public Square, but I wouldn't mind the Mall becoming the location for this concert every year.

The Indians always do this. Whenever I 'officially' throw in the towel on their season, they go on a winning streak.

Tell that to the Cardinals, Pirates, Orioles, Padres, Brewers, Reds, and Royals...all of whom play in cities with smaller media markets than Cleveland yet have larger salaries.
  20. Inconsistent lamp posts are a staple of Cleveland. Looking around downtown streets you'll probably find a dozen different designs scattered about with no particular rhyme or reason. It's a huge pet peeve. EDIT: Also ArtMasterCLE[/member], those pictures did not open for me. Did anyone else have trouble accessing them?
  21. It will be additional seating for those eating prepared foods, sushi, salad bar, grill, etc, just like the seating under the rotunda. Tables will be in place mid-next week.
  22. Heinen's is in the process of installing an outdoor patio area on Euclid. I would have taken a picture this morning, but the workers had set the fences up in the wrong space. The patio will be accessed from the western most door of the rotunda building.
  23. It definitely has started drilling behind Stark's WHD building.
  24. Off the top of my head, it will reduce noise and also create less of a physical barrier between Detroit-Shoreway and the park. Also, Edgewater abuts right up to the edge of the Shoreway, and there is no fence separating the two. It will create a more pleasant experience for those utilizing the southern end of the park. Edit: That doesn't mean I think it will be followed. I drove up and down Lakeshore Dr. in Chicago a few weeks ago, which has a 40 mph speed limit as well as some street lights, yet people were easily going 70 MPH
