I'm glad Kerry is doing this, but why does it take a councilman to do this kind of thing? The city ran a pilot project involving mobile payment and credit card parking meters back in 2013, but I can't get an answer as to what happened to that (https://www.cleveland.com/business/index.ssf/2013/08/cleveland_tests_new_downtown_p.html). Doing this kind of "research" that Kerry is talking about should really be done by parking staff in Public Works. But when Michael Cox is your department director, I suppose you probably shouldn't expect much from that department.
  2. The RTA board only has authority to put sales or property taxes on the ballot, IIRC. The city and county could implement other kinds of taxes to fund transit though.

  4. Joe Calabrese is out https://www.clevescene.com/scene-and-heard/archives/2018/07/24/rta-board-votes-to-boot-joe-calabrese-transition-him-to-senior-advisory-role The Board also passed a motion to support drafting language for a possible levy this November
  5. I'd rather have bollards than train traffic arms.
  6. There were also issues with the types of trees that were installed. From what I understand, the design firm that worked on the Shoreway warned ODOT that the type of trees that they selected would not fare well in that environment. But ODOT didn't heed their recommendation and went with those trees anyway.

Sure. Hopefully it doesn't take another 30 years.

    I love/hate this thread.

Same spot, same view, just 100 years later:
  10. I always get nervous when I see that there is a new post in this thread. It should be called, "Cleveland: Westown-Jefferson: Dona's Demolitions and Parking Lots"

My initials. The 2 is for the II suffix in my name.
  12. 1) Superior between West 6th and Public Square is FINALLY getting repaved this summer. http://www.downtowncleveland.com/news/june-2018/superior-avenue-resurfacing-project 2) What should we replace the LeBron banner with?
  13. Let's hope something comes to fruition here, unlike what happened after Forest City first announced their plans 30 years ago for "condominiums, apartments, marinas, and select retail"on the Scranton Peninsula. From the PD on June 15, 1988:
  14. Here are a couple of tweets from the Exec Director of Slavic Village's CDC re: the demolitions: Every property on Fleet we have attempted to rehab through Chain Reaction and many other means over my four years at SVD, but have found no takers. Each one would require no less than $80,000 to pull out of condemnation... (1/2) These have been vacant for over ten years & were originally built to last 50 years, assuming constant care. If you can find me somebody to invest in these, Let Me Know. Not a decision taken capriciously. Vacant, neglected buildings discourage investment in other buildings. (2/2)
  15. To save you from having to look them up individually, here are all the properties on Fleet slated for demolition
  16. I agree. The place is just so huge (you could fit more than 4 Crocker Parks on the land) and disconnected that I don't see how any development would be at an appropriate scale and it would be completely cut off from the city. I think that it could make for an awesome park. Burke with 4 Crocker Parks on top of it, compared to Northerly Island in Chicago (former site of Meigs Field Airport) at the same scale:

  18. I recently heard that Southern Tier will be opening on July 11th.
  19. The cost for those trees is like a recruitment tool for the tea party. EDG knew that those trees would die. But ODOT insisted on them. Looks like EDG was correct.
  20. Considering the string of truck-based terrorism attacks that have happened globally since the decision was made it was no "faux" concern. Rather, it was quite prescient. Though if you're not a Jackson fan, I think you can give credit (he did) to his safety forces for requiring the design change. This is a scapegoat of an excuse. How is Public Square any more or less vulnerable to a truck attack than any other public space downtown? X is incorrect. This was a BS excuse from the beginning. Ginger Christ had a good write up about it last year https://www.cleveland.com/metro/index.ssf/2017/01/public_square_is_not_a_prime_t.html

  22. Moroun confirms Detroit train station sold to Ford: 'Blue Oval will adorn the building' By CHAD LIVENGOOD •Train station revitalization "part of enormous plan taking in much more than the depot itself," Moroun says •Talks with Ford began in mid-October •Moroun now focused on building new Detroit River bridge Detroit's worst-kept secret is official: The Moroun family has sold the historic Michigan Central Station in Detroit to Ford Motor Co. in a landmark real estate deal that could portend a transformation of Corktown and the automaker's re-engagement with the city where it was founded. http://www.crainsdetroit.com/article/20180611/news/663281/moroun-confirms-detroit-train-station-sold-to-ford-blue-oval-will-adorn
