  1. That's not going to happen. The judges (and the lawyers) want the courthouse downtown.
  2. They're lonely. Give 'em a break.
  3. Not sure what all the hand-wringing is over. Appelbaum says the report shows that the property can be remediated and used for a jail - providing "better air quality than most residential homes in Cuyahoga County that have properly functioning HVAC equipment." Cleveland is an old, dirty industrial city. I'd be surprised if there is ANY open land of this size in the City that does not need remediated. If remediated land is good enough for the residents of Battery Park and Electric Gardens, its good enough for short terming inmates, who will enjoy better air quality than most.
  4. I know its not the same area, but today I drove up Cedar from Cedar-Fairmount and was bummed to see how shabby the housing stock looked almost the entire length. Cleveland Heights should at least do some paint inspections. Kinda sad.
  5. 8/10/22. Not sure what the "boxes" being built are for....
  6. I believe Ohio law requires the County to bear the costs of jailing prisoners, even if the prisoners are municipal court detainees or convicts.
  7. I wonder if I missed something. I thought they were going to do yet another study on whether the jail could be renovated. Or is this just Budish moving forward with plans, with the confidence that the study will say "you need a new jail."
  8. it pretty much looks just like the July 13 photo above, but with a plywood box around the crane base.
  9. If you're talking about the commercial buildings, the plans clearly show an overlay. I have no clue about how one engineers that. But on a side note, that plaza was always there. How quickly we forget!
  10. All things considered, I think it's not too bad. Glad they saved the old retail, still not convinced the plaza. But Casto does good work, so at least I don't think this will cheap.
  11. Interesting that Johnny Q 's had fake brick over real brick.
  12. Years ago, I saw rendering for a beautiful Beaux Arts entrance to a Lorain-Huron bridge. Have not been able to find it since....
  13. ^^ Boy, that's ugly. Geis has a real knack for capturing that dispiriting 1970's suburban office look.
  14. That's a top notch proposal!
  15. There used to be a bridge (gone by the 1950s) that connected Scranton Avenue with Canal Road (and before Tower City eliminated it ... Seneca Street).
  16. Some fairly high-res, 1930s photos that are new to me, at least.
  17. Yep. It should be clear. I believe reflective glass films weren't commercialized until the late 60s and reflective glass coatings until the late 70s -- the back-end of the (non-revivalist) international style.
  18. Question regarding the second picture. Why would SW be digging down so far on what is planned to be a surface lot? They did a nearly identical dig with a similar steel retaining wall (now covered) on what I thought will be the southwest corner of the tower itself ... about where the cranes are parked in the picture.
  19. It wasn't always ugly. But I imagine the original façade was destroyed by the "modernization," and would be way too expensive to restore simply for aesthetics.
  20. All I have to say is that the Main Avenue bridge is a gem. I love the views under it, and I love the view from it. Big city vibes. It would be a bummer for it to come down.
  21. Has anyone heard what the business owners think of the bike lanes on Lorain? Lorain, unlike a lot of places, generally does not have parking lots behind the commercial buildings.
