Cleveland Hopkins International Airport
Nice catch. Interested to see what those 9 destinations are, and how many will be year-round vs. seasonal. (You'd think winter seasonal would be launched by now?) A lot of good info at the bottom of that article, including a note of how average airfare to Boston has dropped 40% since 2013 due to increased competition...another sign that the loss of the hub has helped many consumers in the long-run.

Cleveland: Ohio City: Church+State (West 29th & Detroit Ave)
I'm by no means an architect, but agree that the design of this building (and many, many other new-builds on the near-west-side and throughout the country) is disappointing. I assume the aluminum siding is significantly cheaper than a more traditional material, but I can't imagine we'll be thrilled with these aluminum-clad designs in 20 years. That being said, I'm excited to have another big residence here, and will gladly accept this in place of a dusty parking lot.

Cleveland: Mayor Frank Jackson
I have reluctantly accepted Mayor Jackson as the "lesser of evils" in recent years, but I'm disgusted by this series of events, and think it should result in his resignation. Hopefully the drumbeat gets a little louder among those that actually have a microphone in the city, though I'm not holding my breath.

Cleveland: Detroit-Shoreway / Gordon Square Arts District: Development News
I don't remember seeing this posted anywhere, but I recently noticed an interesting sale on Detroit Ave... The small (and fairly decrepit) building on Detroit and W 69th, which currently houses Subway and Georgio's Pizza, was sold in October for $320K. The buyer is listed as PWF GORDON SQ LLC on the County site, and a quick Google search links it back to an agent at CRE firm Marcus & Millichap. While $5 subs and hot-and-ready pizzas have their place, it would be great to replace this building, and the ugly parking lot that fronts Detroit Ave, with something new to extend the pedestrian-friendly retail west toward Lake Ave.

Columbus Crew Discussion
One scary piece of random speculation surrounding the Haslams... Jimmy and Dee own the Cleveland Browns as we all know. We also know that the Browns are already getting the ball rolling on a negotiation for a future stadium in Cleveland. There are several examples around the league (Atlanta, Seattle, New England, etc.) of MLS teams playing in the same facility as their owners' NFL team, and it's a pretty attractive business model for those owners. In this particular case, it could even help the owners get additional public funding by doubling the number of active dates for a future stadium. Again it's pretty baseless speculation, but I do think it's enough to provide the Haslams with leverage over Columbus in new-Crew stadium negotiations. And if things don't get off to a great start, or if there's a major hitch in getting a new Crew stadium, I wouldn't be surprised to see the Cleveland scenario floated.

At a minimum, I hope the new regime can get the Crew's games back on a TV network that people actually watch!

Columbus Crew Discussion
Awesome (unconfirmed) news for a Friday! Let's hope the Haslams are willing to invest in the team. If done properly, I could see a wave of support with the grassroots energized, and the wider market being more willing to support an owner not named Precourt. Thrilled for Crew fans!

Cleveland: Detroit-Shoreway / Gordon Square Arts District: Development News
Any way to tell where on West 73rd this is? The entire east side of the street is potentially re-developable... Edit Update: the Sixmo Architects site lists Battery Park as one of their recent projects, so it's possible this is just the plot that has already been cleared north of Battery Park Blvd?

Cleveland: Detroit-Shoreway / Gordon Square Arts District: Development News
Agree that the design is pretty meh, and the developer doesn't have a great track record (see: recent rent strike at its property in Beechwood.) I'm skeptical that Edison Phase I or II will be in great shape in ~10 years. I'd still rather have something in this location than what's there (or not there) right now.

Cleveland Relocation: need neighborhood, school recommendations
Lakewood or Shaker seem like the easiest solutions based on your criteria - dense enough to be walkable (though it varies depending on exact location), but without the hassles of having to stress over picking the right school. If you're set on buying, just make sure you're accounting for HIGH property taxes in several areas (Shaker and Cleveland Heights especially.)

Good to see more development fill in south of Breakwater for Phase II, but I'm majorly bummed about that Hawken news.

2018 FIFA World Cup
Odd attempted troll job. I'll never understand why there's a segment of the population who feels the need to lash out at soccer. Why so threatened/offended that some people enjoy following the sport? As for the ratings, there are plenty of reasonable explanations for why ratings were down from 2014.

Cleveland: Downtown: Jack Cleveland Casino - Phase 2
There's no real event space at JACK. At many casinos there is a theater or ballroom venue of some kind that's used for concerts, comedians, boxing, etc. That's not really needed in Cleveland, with so many downtown entertainment options surrounding the casino, but the main positive to a casino venue from a local's perspective is that casinos often pay fees up-front to different acts, which can help attract shows that wouldn't be willing to come to town otherwise.

Cleveland: Detroit-Shoreway / Gordon Square Arts District: Development News
It will be good to have something open and operating in that space. The concept seems very similar to the recently (re)opened Battery Park Pub that's 50 yards down the street, but hopefully there's enough traffic to keep both places going.

Cleveland Hopkins International Airport
My $0.02, but don't waste precious vacation time on unnecessary extra travel. You could spend a year in Italy and not come close to seeing everything...stick to that if you can. Love to see a cheap non-stop Sarasota flight from CLE, and the flight times are positioned well for a long-weekend trip. Tons of Ohioans on the gulf coast, so I imagine/hope that flight will be popular. As an aside, I still wish the Indians had found a way to move their Spring Training home to Sarasota instead of exurban Phoenix. It would be an annual trip for me in FLA.

KeyBank maybe. For the rest of these businesses, there is plenty of space available down Lorain Ave :)

Cleveland Hopkins International Airport
Agreed, I thought it was supposed to be year-round from the start, but good to see an official commitment. WOW dropping service over the winter was also expected I believe? They seem to operate pretty unconventionally, and I'd definitely choose IcelandAir if I had to pick one of them. If we can't get a flight into a major European hub for now, maybe Norwegian Air could be targeted? They are in a lot of east coast airports, but seem pretty light in the midwest other than Chicago.

Amazing that some people can see an event like last night's City Stages in Hingetown and think that they want *less* of that in their neighborhood.

Cleveland SC Soccer Stadium
I mentioned in another thread, but Scranton peninsula would obviously be a cool place for a stadium and could be an early "anchor" to any development. It has the added advantage of being very accessible by transit, and there would be many pre/post-game drinking options in walking distance :) It would also be located near large hispanic and immigrant communities, which make up a big share of the soccer fan base in the U.S. While it would certainly make sense to design a stadium possible future expansion in mind, it's hard to see a scenario in the near future where an MLS team would be viable alongside the 3 existing major league teams. None of the similarly-sized markets in MLS have more than 1 or 2 other local teams to compete with.

Cleveland SC Soccer Stadium
It's used in the fall for mens and womens soccer and the spring for lacrosse. In winter months, they put a bubble over it to use it as a practice facility. It's conceivable these teams could share a facility with a pro soccer team (whose season runs March to OCT/NOV), but Krenzler would have to be significantly upgraded to meet USL standards.

Cleveland SC Soccer Stadium
Cautiously optimistic about this one, but my support for a team basically 100% hinges on them having a decent venue for this downtown or in a surrounding neighborhood. There is also one example in the league (in Indianapolis) of a team playing at an NFL venue, although an expected avg crowd of 5-10k in Browns Stadium wouldn't be ideal. The USL has grown a lot, and you need to have deep pockets to secure a team ($5mil expansion fee + enough net worth to meet U.S. Soccer Division II requirements). For example the Cincinnati team, which draws very well at UC and is jumping up to MLS next year, is owned by the Lindner family with an est net worth of ~$2bil.

Cleveland SC Discussion
Oh wow, I would so love for a return of the Cleveland Force. To me it makes sense to be on the phone with CSU on a shared facility right now. It would be telling to know which developers the Abrams family is talking with. Please no suburbs!!! I take it as a positive sign that they purchased those youth clubs already. Shows they are serious, and having an integrated youth club alongside a pro club is the right way to run a team...it also can have business advantages through sponsorship, forming a built-in fanbase, and providing additional employment opportunities for the (mostly) part-time pros in the USL. The facility sounds like the biggest question mark, and I agree that a partnership with CSU would make a lot of sense, although I'm not sure if CSU has any formal roadmap for investing that much in athletics(?). Another moonshot idea of mine is to see if a stadium could work as part of the Scranton Peninsula development.

Cleveland: Flats East Bank
Why does it seem like people are always dumping this development news on Friday afternoons? I like that they are claiming there will be lower-priced (but still market rate) smaller apartments included in this. As for the movie theater, I think a big luxury destination (similar to new Pinecrest theater) is a slightly better bet long-term, and could help drive some traffic on weeknights and during winter months.

Cleveland SC Discussion
This is basically my dream scenario. Can't think of a better place in America for pre/post-game festivities than the West 25th corridor. They'd have to build a garage across Lorain, and I'm sure some neighborhood groups would lose their minds, but it would be incredibly fun. I don't doubt that Ignatius could raise the money for it. If they could even build some suites or "premium" amenities, I bet they could bring in similar $-per-suite as the Browns for some games. I completely understand why as a school they might be hesitant to build there, but I'm going to keep on dreaming anyway.
