  1. Don’t know why the township wouldn't want to address the beginnings of a vacant mall situation - seems to me they were fortunate that the developer was reacting quickly to course-correct
  2. As this rural area will quickly experience exurban development it would be good to prepare for walkability/bikeability improvements before sprawl makes it more difficult to do. One thing that could be done is to build out bike paths along the roads, from the plant area outward to all the populations centers in the area, and connecting to existing bike paths and parks. So bike paths along roads connecting to New Albany, Johnstown, Alexandria, Granville, Newark, Pataskala. Then even extend the network west into the more developed Columbus suburbs Easton, Gahanna, Westerville, even to the airport area. Connect to the TJ Evans bike trail, the Big Walnut bike trail, Alum Creek bike trail, and to Bevelhymer Park, Rocky Fork metro park, and Hoover Reservoir Park. Do a bike trail one one side of the roads and a sidewalk on the other side if possible. Bury the utilities if possible and plant more trees along the paths. Here is a picture of just one such bike path that could be possible. The network I have in mind would have lines all over the map though. The second picture shows existing nearby bike trails. Environmentally it would be good to identify some core chunks of wildlife habitat (perhaps with wetlands or with potential for wetland restoration) to preserve and then have forested wildlife corridors in between them (also connecting to existing or expanded parks.) These corridors could also serve to manage water runoff and provide windbreak. If these could be combined with trail routes it could provide shade for the trails. Acknowledging that the area will be developed but doing it with more of a mind for nature than previous generations of sprawl and even better including opportunities for people to manage their mental and physical health by giving them opportunities to connect to nature. https://www.ncwildlife.org/Portals/0/Conserving/documents/GGT/Manual/GGT_handbook_2017_Section_3.pdf It's also something that could enhance the area's reputation and narrative and thus be good for business
  3. This is a common sense change. the regulation (binding the # of units to lot size square footage) is arbitrary and burdensome. Eliminating it would be best but loosening it like this proposal does is good too. I think the regulation hurts small developers more than big developers because the big guys have the resources to navigate the system and get exemptions
  4. I agree hockey is not very popular in Cincinnati and even concede that it may make more sense have the Blue Jackets spilt between Columbus and Cleveland of they were to do something like that. This thread is about a new arena in Cincinnati which needs tenants and events to justify its construction though. Does monster truck rally+ concerts + convention event get there or would having some number of NBA basketball and/or NHL hockey games put it over the hump? What if it were 8 games a year (20% of the home schedule) instead of 50%? Would that expand the market for the sports team and encourage tourism in between nearby cities? It’s an interesting cost/benefits debate
  5. Another thought experiment: What if a deal is struck and the Columbus Blue Jackets are renamed Ohio Blue Jackets and they play half of their home games in Columbus and half of their home games in a new arena in Cincinnati. Does this work out for the team? Does average attendance (now about 15k+ In Columbus) go up? (Cyclones average attendance is about 5k) Do tv revenues, advertising and merchandise sales go up? It’s certainly not the way pro sports work now but but could we see it someday for small to mid size markets?
  6. Just found that Tampa Bay Rays were looking in to playing home games in Montreal but the plan was rejected by MLB. This would be a lot less crazy than that. About 90 miles between potential arena locations. About 20 NBA games on each location. Louisville gets a tenant for Yum arena. Cincinnati gets an excuse for a new arena to that can be used for other events etc. If you look at an NBA fandom map Cincinnati and Louisville are on the fringe of Cavaliers and Pacers territory respectively and not solidly in either one. A split team could claim the whole of Kentucky and southern Ohio up to Dayton.
  7. interesting thought: I wonder if we could share an NBA team with Louisville… (I know the Packers used to split games between Green Bay and Milwaukee)
  8. well then perhaps Laurel Playground because that would be right next to the stadium garage (just a guess, not an endorsement)
  9. A location in the West End that might work and have some synergy with some other goals is the NW corner of Ezzard Charles and Linn. It has highway access, it’s in between the existing stadium and Union Terminal lots, and could help build up the Linn Street business district. ( i could also see this as a location for a re-located District One police station)
  10. A blue and orange Cincinnati Royals team playing b-ball on Central Parkway perhaps?
  11. Speaking of the caps, I’ve had the thought that the FWW caps could be the site of a series of exhibition halls administered by the convention center, but the convention center seems to require a contiguous expansion.
  12. I wonder if they could move the ice skating from Fountain Square to either temporary space in this convention center district or into some kind of permanent outdoor space for the convention center. (The packet included some images of other convention centers’ outdoor space) then put some kind of Christmas market or something on the Fountain Square to activate it in wintertime. Nothing against the rink in general, but the way they construct the rink now totally blocks off Fountain Square from the street with big barricades. They also may be able to do something bigger and better in a different location
  13. Should one of these go at the Banks or in the newly designated “Convention Center District”? https://nypost.com/2019/12/05/airbnb-to-open-natiivo-condo-tower-in-miami/?fbclid=IwAR3eitchdZanFO3xyreOA-XyA-ZkpHyxlIXMOEZQshrZDYdtRrxQVccFQt8
  14. The most important thing to ensure the success of this project is to go right out and recruit a second and a third company to build a semiconductor facility in the area. Build an ecosystem to build experience and so people don’t have to move their families across the country when changing jobs within this industry.
  15. *galaxy brain idea* renovate the Terrace Plaza Hotel as part of this “convention center district” project
  16. if they must re-build they should straighten it out so it hits Harrison in the vicinity of Patterson St. and then also remove the Colerain Avenue stub. Then you could have new buildings facing Central Parkway and do some unique placemaking around the bank building.
  17. Complete waste to re-build this bridge on its current configuration. We should be taking a once on an 80-100 year opportunity to make land available again for new residents/businesses. There’s a lot less justification for this bridge than when it was first built, and I doubt anyone would be trying to build it if it didn’t already exist.
  18. pretty good video explaining the project here: https://www.cincinnatiport.org/port-shorts-kao-usa-inc-and-powell-valves/
  19. Wow, That’s a lot of units! Here is the packet with all the details: https://www.springdale.org/publicfiles/2021 1507 Major Modification to PUD 11700 Princeton Pike City Council Information Packet PT 1 2021 12 22.pdf
  20. Re: the brief Gilbert discussion upthread, I hope rail potential could be evaluated, perhaps for something like this or something similar:
  21. I hope the possibility of streetcar or light rail routing is considered seriously when planning a makeover. Central Parkway could be the way to West End, Fairmount and/or Northside for rail
  22. Proximity to all downtown and uptown neighborhoods plus Northside. And mature trees
  23. ^It looks like the facade renderings in that article would be the south side, the side that faces the stadium and Wade St.
  24. ^I found that Miami to Miami page after posting the concept above, but I cannot tell what the intended route is by looking at the map at the link. None of the roads are labeled
  25. lots of internet search results about this topic: https://www.americantrails.org/resources/power-lines-along-trails http://www.pedestrians.org/topics/row-gallery.htm https://usa.streetsblog.org/2014/07/29/houstons-plan-to-make-bicycle-interstates-out-of-its-utility-network/ https://www.traillink.com/trail/power-line-trail-(pa)/
