  1. ^ The green walls at the convention center look good, I think they'll grow in nicely there and improve the whole feel of that drop off area. The entire renovation project was really well done actually And agreed 100% about the backside of the Ohio Theater... I can't believe CDDC is content to leave that as-is to be honest
  2. ^ So I haven't ridden one yet (or seen anyone else riding one for that matter...), but LimeBikes are seemingly everywhere in Columbus now. It looks like they drove up and down some of the main streets and just dumped out bikes about a half dozen at a time every other block. I'm intrigued by the car2go-style free floating system, so it will be interesting to see how they start to move around and distribute themselves throughout the city as people use them. Hoping to give it a try this weekend, though I kinda wish we had gotten the scooters instead
  3. ^ The little building behind the church on the same block is also CPS admin offices
  4. View from the food court at lunch today. Almost topped out!
  5. ^ Gateway has always really struggled from a retail standpoint... The pedestrian alley especially has poor visibility for tenants and much lower foot traffic than I think the designers anticipated. IMO the whole complex was positioned a little too far south of campus' main shopping scene, and a little too far north of the short north's, to really be able to successfully attach itself to either one. At least from opening in 2005-ish to present. That should finally change soon now that so many other developments are about to open nearby, helping to fill in and bridge the gap I also think if the grocery store which was there originally had been able to hang on (Sunflower Market, the entire chain closed shortly after opening here) things could have been different. But, backfilling retail space with university offices, and converting the apartments above into dorms also didn't help
  6. Google maps has updated their satellite imagery for Columbus. It's now very recent, and many more projects are visible/underway/complete. Pretty neat to pan around! https://www.google.com/maps/?force=canvas
  7. taestell[/member] fantastic photos! They really give unique and very useful views to better understanding new development and the city at-large. You may have already answered this elsewhere, but what kind of drone do you use to take these? Thanks!
  8. Wow fantastic news today. Very glad Buckingham has been shown the door, and I reiterate all my criticism of them from the initial announcement a few pages back. I also think doing RFPs for individual parcels will lead to a better development overall, and that this shows CDDC has already learned from the HighPoint debacle. That was the first Columbus Commons project, and by far the worst, but it did get the ball rolling. Everything that came after that has been larger, denser, and better designed Re: Amazon, their decision will be announced in the next few months so there shouldn't be any real "waiting" involved or much if any delay. It's more just being aware that this is the prime site we have to offer, so having contingency plans thought of beforehand just in case we are picked for HQ2. The Dispatch article even quotes CDDC saying that they're moving forward with issuing an RFP for the first parcel now regardless
  9. In the midst of all this new development, the original South Campus Gateway is continuing to shed tenants at a record clip... All of the following have closed recently Mad Mex Ugly Tuna Saloona Tervis Foot Locker Aveda NutritionX Fusian PizzaRev Yoga Six

  11. ^ The Dispatch article on the Penzone salon also mentions that an unnamed women's clothing store will be opening in the building as well. With those four tenants, I believe the ground floor is fully leased http://www.dispatch.com/business/20180605/new-penzone-salon--spa-planned-for-castle-development-in-short-north
  12. Update from this afternoon, what a difference some windows make! Mikey's looks about ready to open as well
  13. That would be quite an undertaking. The east side is 1 story higher than the west side. The connector would need a grand set of stairs, elevator and perhaps escalators. COSI would need to rework the ticket lobby to separate it from the connector. Apparently they really do mean right through the middle of COSI, "The idea is to create a corridor through the middle of the building that will connect the new park to the west with the riverfront, and the millions in improvements that have been made there. The space, with winter gardens, food and retail, also will add to the traditional COSI experience" And here's a rendering, http://www.dispatch.com/news/20180227/dublin-arena-cosi-corridor-among-projects-in-line-to-get-state-cash I was initially kind of skeptical of this idea of the glass-covered arcade through COSI, but looking at that picture above from the other side of the park, I think it would actually be really nice, and help to link a lot better the Scioto Peninsula with the river
  14. OMG... Hopefully we won't have to wait until then for Crawford Hoying to get started next door. Seeing as how LC is finally almost topped out, I wonder if they could get started this summer?
  15. Exactly. Columbus has no less than 3 airports within its boundaries for example. That alone is a H U G E amount of land with 0 people. And then add in industrial zones, multiple quarries, rail yards, etc...
  16. Columbus gained more people within city limits in just one year 2016-17 (+15.5k) than the entire OSU dorm population (~14k)
  17. Remember that this project was already fully approved at 9 stories, and there was little to no opposition at the time. This whole thing that's going on now started up because Kaufman came back with the High St side bumped up to 14. It's already balanced out some to 12 now, and he seemed to indicate he would be open to 11, so I have some confidence he and the VVC will come to an agreement soon I believe there's also a deadline he's working against in regards to needing to have it approved this summer to avoid the new affordable housing requirements the city is about to implement for the SN...
  18. To me the amazing thing about Nashville is that the data shows it really isn't actually growing much at all. The most recent estimate released today has it up a paltry 0.42% y-o-y or around 2,800 people - and that's even less impressive considering they have a consolidated city-county government. Columbus was up 1.8% or 15,500, with all of Franklin County up 22,000. So what is it that's driving the national narrative and development boom that says Nashville is growing like crazy? I'm not sure where you saw that statistic. The metro area has grown by about 30,000 each year since 2015. 9,000 hotel rooms have been built in Davidson County since 2010 and 2,000 rooms are under construction as we speak in downtown Nashville. On some weekends, the cheapest hotel room in DT Nashville is over $500. There is a lot of construction in Columbus but what's going on in Nashville is crazy. It's not just the hotels and residential towers downtown, it's all of the tear-downs and infill in the neighborhoods. I was very surprised too, for just the reasons you mentioned. But look for yourself - 2016 estimate was 664,762 and a year later 2017 is now 667,560 https://factfinder.census.gov/bkmk/table/1.0/en/PEP/2017/PEPANNRSIP.US12A Edit: Maybe it's a problem with the estimates, and will be revised upward (I see the 2016 number is 4,000 more now than what was initially released last year), but still. I was also surprised to see that Davidson county is roughly the same size in sq miles as Franklin, but with half the population Interestingly Austin also looks to have slowed in its growth considerably during the last year according to the latest numbers

  20. Very disappointing... Zipcar recently announced they were finally returning to Columbus in a larger scale, which is some consolation, but the one-way 'floating' car2go model is by far much more convenient
  21. The most recent renderings didn't make the move to this thread with everything else for some reason, but I think they look better than what is shown above and a lot less 225/80 Commons-like https://www.urbanohio.com/forum/index.php/topic,2062.msg912095.html#msg912095
  22. Yeah it could be more, but I think it's "okay-enough" given the location
  23. The whole thing is weird. Emails from her dad? Donate now to "make her birthday a special one??" I know these emails are for supporters anyway but... Yikes
  24. In a way actually, yes it did. Large convention hotels are often publicly owned and financed. That's how both the Cleveland and Columbus Hiltons and many others across the country have been conceived of and built. They exist because governments in those cities made them a priority. The leaders who push for and realize these projects are elected by the people, and (supposedly) represent their interests and/or will If a city government or public body isn't interested, or doesn't find such a project to be among its priorities, it likely won't happen. That's just the reality of this particular type of development in most markets https://hvs.com/article/8126-public-involvement-in-convention-center-hotel-financing
  25. I'm sure there is a certain buyer/client behind this... I wonder who it is
