Cincinnati: Over-the-Rhine: Development and News
SleepyLeroy replied to The_Cincinnati_Kid's post in a topic in Southwest Ohio Projects & ConstructionThey wrote in to the HCB in opposition to a few recent projects, so I assume they're not going anywhere. I disapprove of their scaffolding, it "towers over the 2-story building next door".

Cincinnati: Avondale: Development and News
“Money in its proper place is a worthwhile and necessary instrument for a well-rounded life, but when it is projected to the status of a god it becomes a power that corrupts and an instrument of exploitation. When men arrive at the point of making money a god they become more concerned with what they can get out of society than with what they can give to society in terms of service…When men bow down and worship at the shrine of money they are being deprived of their most precious endowment—the possibility of living life in its fullness and its endless beauty.” Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. 1953

9/11 Legacy Thread
Was 28 and on the way to my first work related Trade Show at The Javits Center in NYC. Never made it. Our plane got to Atlanta where we were supposed to get the flight up to NY but the ground stop was already underway when we touched down. There were SWAT looking guys in black with guns & dogs running about Hartsfield Airport and the salesguy i was traveling with, who was a frequent business traveler realized how bad it was and called a rental agency vs waiting in line as he figured the airport was a target too. As we got our rental I saw a group of older corporate guys in suits split a car with a bunch of college bros going the same direction. We were all the same briefly. Got back later the next afternoon and a few weeks later even got my luggage which was a big surprise. I missed all the tv at the time and only heard updates on the radio. Binged on it all once it was on the web in later years. Stupidist part was not having a cell phone and calling all the people who I told I was going to a Trade Show in NYC and they assumed that all Trade Shows were at the Trade Center. Lots of quarters were used, parents assumed i was gone and even called Delta whos rep was rightfully freaked out and clueless like we all were on what was going down. The trade show I was going to was looted for any medical related items & food by the city then cleared by bulldozers who crushed all the displays to the side to use Javits as a medical zone for the all the suspected wounded. Hadn't flown on a commercial plane since and had only once before as a child.

Cincinnati: Downtown: Terrace Plaza Hotel
If there are any architects out there that will be around Wednesday, the AIA has a talk and idea lab for generating suggestions for the redevelopment and direction of Terrace Plaza. Im a designer but not an architect or I would check it out myself. https://www.facebook.com/events/173662766799230/ On another note, I saw this fundraiser mentioned in a trade magazine and to me it had a clear Terrace Plaza vibe. Someday, in some fashion this space will be back to use again. https://www.interiordesign.net/articles/15399-diffa-s-picnic-by-design-celebrates-broadway-supports-hiv-aids-organizations/

SleepyLeroy replied to The_Cincinnati_Kid's post in a topic in Southwest Ohio Projects & ConstructionI get you on the staggered windows. I wish they just went with modern full industrial casements and dropped the trendy stuff as it give it a stuck in an era look before it even gets built.

Cincinnati: Over-the-Rhine: Development and News
SleepyLeroy replied to The_Cincinnati_Kid's post in a topic in Southwest Ohio Projects & ConstructionMy initial thought was that it was boring but i think that is what is needed in the new architecture at this scale since attempts to make it 'less boring' usually result in the 'multi building faux historic cornices look' that is a fake busy mess. If this was done in solid, real materials and even concrete it could look nice in its setting without clashing with the Woodward and other real historic buildings. It has a massive re purposed industrial look that i think works well for the large open infill spots. It could be larger, it could be denser, it could be a lot of things but thank God it isnt another big building pretending it is a block of little buildings. The good news is an out of town group is doing it and may bring a different insight and that may lead to a more diverse group of ideas and projects from even more. EDIT: By 'attempts to make it less boring' i meant by NIMBY meddling or the Historic District rules not by the architects.

Cincinnati: Downtown: Fourth & Race (Pogue Garage) Redevelopment
Of course they dont, that is how Mayor Cranley rolls, and if you vote against this deal he will hold it over you at election time as you being anti-development. EDIT: I'm trying to be better I'll strike that until more details emerge, still seems the city is acting like we are desperate for selected projects vs standing our ground and demanding everyone play ball the same way.

I stay off twitter but someone should tell him to Google the avg Seattle gas price at the moment and explain why things in different places cost different amounts.

Cincinnati: West End: TQL Stadium
I'm worried that this is going to end up looking like a casino. Maybe we will get a 'Unique' garage like The Bucks did next to their new stadium. All the cool urban arenas have one. Why drink in the neighborhood bars when you can pay to party nextdoor to the stadium (and your car) on the top level "Tailgate ZONE tm"! Blech! https://fox6now.com/2017/10/31/pretty-unique-parking-garage-near-new-bucks-arena-could-someday-feature-top-level-tailgating/

SleepyLeroy replied to buildingcincinnati's post in a topic in Southwest Ohio Projects & ConstructionAmazingly that building has been in the same family since 1900?!? according to the HC Auditor. Maybe even before as the pre 1900 owner is unknown. The family sold it in 2014 and the last family owner seems to have passed in 2017.

SleepyLeroy replied to buildingcincinnati's post in a topic in Southwest Ohio Projects & ConstructionFrom the facebook page "You're Invited! Join us for an adult-only information & feedback session on plans for new construction of the lot on 9th and Elm St. This informal meeting will take place in the existing structure at 819 Elm St. The goal is to inform the community of plans for construction and also gather feedback from attendees" Is there a big problem with people bringing their kids to information and feedback sessions I'm not aware of? Somewhere in there it said the 'no kids' thing was because the building was rough on the inside and they didnt want anyone hurt.

I see the church like I see the large red warehouse behind District 1 that FCC also wants. It seems to me as greedy and an ego thing to say we have ALL this area in this megablock for our development alone. Both of those buildings arent spectacular bits of history or architecture but they add to the interest of the area and differentiate it from any bare plot in the suburbs. They wanted to be in the city, they like that their fans want to be in the city, the appreciate what the city offers to the teams image, they also paid lip service to being a good neighbor. It would be nice if they didnt then march in and level everything within view so that they controlled and planned and sanitized everything so much that you didnt know you were even in the city anymore. that warehouse and church could be assets to the look and feel of the area. Maybe the church could be a team shop or something so that they could control it but there is no need to tear down one of the few surviving things that escaped the HUD era and the I-75 demolitions just to clean the entire slate for FCC. Same for the warehouse. it helps having a smaller structure like it as a buffer between Music Hall and the soon to be massive stadium too, which may be the reason they wanted it but i like the thought that the people in those lofts could have some killer FCC parties kinda like the buildings by Wrigley Field. https://www.google.com/maps/@39.1128522,-84.5239569,3a,90y,6.32h,112.75t/data=!3m6!1e1!3m4!1sf-oXehB2E2tTgcHOwg79zQ!2e0!7i13312!8i6656

SleepyLeroy replied to buildingcincinnati's post in a topic in Southwest Ohio Projects & Construction^^ I saw that same facebook post if that is what you are refering too and even though they say 'lot' it would have to be the open lot as well as the lots the buildings sit on to fit a structure of that size. Based on the render it shows it facing both elm & 9th too so it looks as if they are thinking of a demo and rebuild. Guess we will find out more soon.

Cincinnati: South Fairmount: Development and News
Yep I guess driving thru here twice a day has me a bit touchy that everyone else isnt in the know. If it was the other way around and i was putting up with this chaos for an open sewer id be the first at the pitchfork store.

Cincinnati: South Fairmount: Development and News
Just wondering if anyone else had had a similar discussion. Twice this week people i trust to be fairly caught up with things mentioned how the Lick Run will have open sewage flowing thru it during rain storms so they were wondering the purpose of the whole project. Are other people of this opinion out there? I thought it was fairly well known that the creek would be storm water while the sewage would run in an enclosed pipe underground. Maybe it isnt played up enough but if this is the popular opinion maybe they need to step up the PR a bit. Hopefully the finished project will change opinion but I was surprised that intelligent people would believe that hundreds of millions were being spent to make an open sewer and no one was stepping up to complain.

SleepyLeroy replied to The_Cincinnati_Kid's post in a topic in Southwest Ohio Projects & ConstructionAs a person outside of real estate it doesn't seem the profits would be in an historic area or anywhere that puts limits on maximum returns. There wont be any Central Park West's happening in OTR so i doubt that type of money ever hits town.
