Cleveland City Council
Just because one is given a pardon does not negate the fact one is a convicted murderer. King does not deserve a street named after him. The victim maybe, but not King. Here are a few other suggested name changes for streets in the CLE for our councilman. 1. Torso Murders Lane. 2. Castro Street. 3. Anthony Sowell Ave.

In that first photo of Public Square looking NW, another tragic loss was the Marshall Building. It was gorgeous. It's the building to the left of the S&SM.

Cleveland: Public Square Redesign
I disagree. What is being ruined is that the attention of the newly redesigned Public Square will be overshadowed by a bunch of oversized children's toys. Many other great aspects of the CLE's downtown; the Group Plan, North Coast Harbor, other architectural assets, etc., will all be overlooked IMO by the majority of visitors during this art installations run. I think the national and international news media during the RNC will have a field day with this art installation, mainly negative. We'll be hearing comments like "they call that art", "why would a city put a bunch of oversized toys on display for the public". The news media will also tie this art installation into the RNC itself, comparing the Republicans to the "toys". This art installation is not needed at all, even temporarily. Let the visitors coming for the RNC, or any visitor to downtown CLE enjoy what the CLE has always offered; beautiful architecture, great restaurants, entertainment venues, sports venues, Playhouse Square. Cleveland's long time assets are what should be highlighted during the RNC, not a temporary bunch of "toys". If the donors, and the artist of the art installation still want to do something with the art pieces, then move the art installation to the CLE Metropark's Zoo. That is a better location.

Northeast Ohio / Cleveland: General Transit Thread
Did anyone see the PBS program last night called "10 towns that changed America"? It had a segment on Portland OR's Pearl District at the end which touches on streetcars and the spinoff developments which happened because of the streetcar. I am not saying the same benefits will come to CIN, or CLE if the CLE ever builds a streetcar line (or extends the WFL), but the Portland piece sure does make a case for streetcar lines, and TOD. Here is a link: http://www.oregonlive.com/tv/2016/04/7_takeaways_about_the_pearl_di.html

Cleveland: Public Square Redesign
Certainly better than the old public square, but I'll reserve judgement until we can see how the concert functions at the new public square. Concert hill might make a great venue as well! I agree that it's tough to pass judgement until we see the new square, but the geometry of the Mall works better for a concert like this. Plus the slope of the convention center entrance created a perfect way for those in the far back to have a better view. And Public Square also has trees, statues, a cafe, etc that may make sight lines difficult. And the fireworks being blasted from the top of the library made viewing them easier as they were behind the orchestra, whereas on Public Square they have typically been set off from 200 Public Square, so they are to your back when viewing the orchestra (again, that may change depending on how they orient the stage with the new set up.) I was not at the Orchestra/Fireworks on Mall B last year, but have gone to this great free event the CLE for years. Before the fireworks were set off from 200 Public Square they were set off from Tower City. It has only been in the last # of years that 200 Public Square was the site of the fireworks. I think the fireworks were much better when they were set off from a-top Tower City. And of course that meant the fireworks were behind the Orchestra and the people did not have to turn around. Do not know why the switch was made years ago from Tower City to 200 Public Square, but sure would like to see Tower City take them back over.

Cleveland: Which Project Will Be Next and Why
A little more history about the south side of Euclid Ave. and E. 9th St. Back around 1980 give or take a few years, there was a proposed development that was not built. This undeveloped project would have stretched from E. 9th St west to the old Hippodrome Theatre building site. It also would have called for the demolition of the City Club Building, and the Schofield Building. At the time of this proposal, back around 1980, there was not as big a movement as today to save buildings from the 1890's - 1920's, so Cleveland would have lost not only the Hippodrome Theatre building, but also the Schofield and the City Club buildings. The obvious good to come out of this unbuilt development was the restored Schofield building into the just recently opened Kimpton Hotel and Apts. Plus the City Club building is still standing. Here is a picture of the unbuilt proposal from around 1980: http://www.clevelandskyscrapers.com/cleveland/e9euclidproject.jpg IMO, the Prospect Ave. side of the "Hippodrome Building" site as KJP referred to it would be a possible site for the new MM HQ. When MM sells their old HQ, I also think the Marous Brothers Co would be a good choice to have purchase it to convert to apt-condo's.

Cleveland: Which Project Will Be Next and Why
There is no actual Hippodrome Tower. What KJP is referring to is the parking deck/surface lot on Euclid Ave. just east of 668 Euclid Ave. The set back parking deck at that location actually has two surface lots along with it. One of the surface lots is on Prospect Ave., and the other is the one on Euclid Ave. Both of these surface lots could support office/apt-condo towers. From knowing the two surface lots, it looks like each of the lots could support buildings in the range of 22k - 25k square feet per floor (only guessing though). On the Euclid Ave side of this spot, maybe Prospect Ave too, but I'm not sure, there was a building called the Hippodrome Theatre, but it was demolished around 1981. Below is a picture of the former Hippodrome Theatre building. http://media.cleveland.com/plain-dealer/photo/2014/07/22/15457402-standard.jpg

Cleveland: Downtown Office Buildings Updates
A couple questions. RE: MM, does anyone know if any of the 450 jobs MM has in the Toledo area are being looked at to be moved to Cleveland and consolidated into a new HQ building? This would definitely add to the amount of sf MM would need. RE: Key, has there been any published info, or does anyone know how many (if any) of the former First Niagara Bank positions Key is planning on moving to Cleveland? I know any possible positions Key moves from Buffalo would not likely result in Key needing a new office tower, but Key would most likely have to lease back some of the approximately 200,00 sf in Key Tower that they let go of a couple years ago.

Cleveland: Retail News
I believe you have good reason to worry about the Coral Co. Under their "Coral" name on their web site they say they are "building the city", but in reality they are not IMO. Of the three shopping centers that I have been too, shopped at, and know about in the city of Cleveland, and Lakewood, Brooklyn Center, Shaker Square, and Lakewood Town Center, two are no longer under their control, and the other has far too many empty store fronts. Brooklyn Center went into default about a year ago, and the Coral Co let the bank take it back over. It was not kept up well when Coral had it, and the neighborhood had many issues with Coral concerning the shopping center. Lakewood Town Center was recently sold off by Coral, but even when Coral owned it, it was not kept up, lots of garbage around the parking lot, trash bins not regularly emptied, etc... And lastly, Shaker Square, it has too many empty store fronts, is not kept up as should be, and is another one of Corals properties which lacks cleanliness.

Cleveland: Streetscape Improvements
Maybe a dumb question, but I'll ask anyway. Why do streetlights need different colored bulbs? Or am I just not reading into your remark correctly? Oh wait, never mind I get it.

Cleveland: Cultural Gardens
The Cleveland Cultural Gardens Federation has a web site with lots of info. Here it is, http://www.clevelandculturalgardens.org

Cleveland: Cultural Gardens
The African-American Cultural Gardens are really coming together, they are going to be a nice addition to the Cultural Gardens as a whole. Now if only the Brits can do something with their Cultural Garden area. It is IMO the most deteriorated of all the gardens, and in need of a major overhaul/upgrade.

Cleveland: Random Development and News
Why not concentrate Pop-Ups as close to the main heart of the RNC as possible, and depending on how many there are available for the RNC, either concentrate them in the Old Arcade, or Tower City. The Galleria is probably to far away. If there were to be enough Pop-Ups for both TC and the OA, use both, if not use only one of the two.

Cleveland: General Business & Economic News
Cleveland has not faired any better. Just off the top of my head the CLE has lost in the last approximately 10 - 20 years, KraftMaid Cabinets, Ameritrust, NCC (Nat. City Bank), Office Max, Revco, BP America, TRW, Charter One, MBNA, Glidden, Real Living (Realty One). And this does not include the co's lost in the Akron area. The good news though is that three of the CLE's largest based co's in the last year have now bought other co's; Sherwin Williams buying Valspar, Medical Mutual buying 105,000 HealthSpan customer accts, and Key Corp's acquisition of First Niagara Bank.

Cleveland: Downtown: Gateway District: Development and News
Can one imagine looking down from one's 50th floor apt/condo from Nucleus and seeing Dan Gilbert trying to sell you a loan. I would not want this. But then maybe Dan has another idea about his roof-top LED sign. Maybe those living in the Nucleus could rent the sign as needed to say "Happy Birthday", "Happy Anniversary", etc, to their loved one for a price. Can one imagine how happy their love one would be seeing their name in such splendor. I know the Terminal Tower takes request from individuals/corporations for lighting up the top of the TC.

Cleveland Rapid Rail Construction Projects (Non-Service Issues)
I too am in favor of a WFL loop around downtown as an at-grade rail line and am in agreement that a 22nd street route would be good idea, but what if there is no demand for future development around the 22nd street/Orange Ave. area? Then this idea if implemented would be another waste of tax payer $ not unlike the rebuilding of the 34th street Red Line station. Here are my thoughts on extending the WFL as an at-grade rail line. What about having the route come down E. 14th street to Chester Ave., take a turn east to E. 16th or 18th, then south to Carnegie Ave. where the line would turn west on Carnegie to hook back up to the Red Line and into Tower City. Having the route more concentrated closer into the downtown area and advocating TOD around it could help improve ridership. Also, having the route closer to CSU/PHS/Wolstein Center/Progressive Field, and planned housing could bring needed ridership. Another though is to have a new Justice Center complex build on the south side of Carnegie Ave. across from the Wolstein Center, say between E. 14th or E. 18th to E. 22nd. This would also bring additional ridership to an extended WFL that would be nearby.

Cleveland: Downtown: Playhouse Square Development and News
I came across this rendering today of a Downtown Indy Development underway, and right away the Greyhound Station in CLE came to mind. The design of this Indy apt building, or something similar would be something I would like to see happen as part of a Greyhound station redevelopment in CLE The curved lines would be very complementary to the Art Deco style of the Greyhound Station. I can envision an apt/condo building on the north side of the station, and another one on the east side of the station. The western side could be repurposed as a park for the development as a whole. http://tribwxin.files.wordpress.com/2013/07/market-sq-development-2.jpg http://flco.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/06/South-West-Day_smaller-980x530.jpg

Cleveland: Downtown Office Buildings Updates
One last shot since it is a really good one of the top of the building. Probably taken around 1950 give or take a few years. http://www.gannett-cdn.com/-mm-/b805aa6274a78da7f802ed4f75d9674fa7978a60/c=1-0-639-480&r=x513&c=680x510/local/-/media/2015/06/16/WKYC/WKYC/635700645294573534-FullSizeRender.jpg

Cleveland: Downtown Office Buildings Updates
Here's a more close up view of the 925 Euclid Ave. building with those "extra floors". Looks like they were added on at a later date, but I could not find any info on that. http://www.emporis.com/images/show/222698-Large-exterior-southeast-corner-from-euclid-avenue.jpg http://www.emporis.com/images/show/134267-Large-fullheightview-view-from-street-level.jpg http://www.clevelandskyscrapers.com/cleveland/huntingtonerieview.jpg

Cleveland: General Business & Economic News
Can SW revive this building, or something just as beautiful. If so, I say build at this intersection (Ontario & Huron), and include an underground RTA stop as it would be build on top of the existing tracks I think.
-
Cleveland: Downtown: The Centennial (925 Euclid Redevelopment)
Here's an idea. Tear down the Ohio Savings building and annex; put in an underground parking garage like was done for Key Center; and extend Perk Park to E. 9th street. A long shot, yes, but it could be done, and the CBD would be even more desirable for both office tenants, and residents with a larger park. The co's now in the Ohio Savings would either fill in other available office space, or even a new office tower.

Cleveland: University Circle: Centric Development (formerly Intesa)
Agreed, and I think it looks like an extension of the Triangle Apts, and we all know how bad those look architecturally.

Prospect Ave
If anyone is interested there is a book available from the Stockyards, Clark-Fulton, Brooklyn Centre CDO that was put together by the BC Historical Society and published in 2004. It is titled Reflections from Brooklyn Centre. Obviously it is about the history of BC. Its founding, history, architecture, oral histories, etc. One can contact the SCFBC CDO for more info at 216-961-9073. I know there are still copies available. Whenever I drive down Denison Ave. between the Jennings Freeway and up to Fulton Rd., I am amazed at the beauty of the architecture of so many of the homes that are still standing of which were built as KJP said in the 1840's and 1850's. Yes the majority of them are in need of tender loving care (restoration), but at least 90% of them are still standing. If only this could be the CLE's next comeback neighborhood. Additionally, the majority of BC was actually built between 1875 - 1915, and 90% of these homes are also still standing. One sad note though is that the Cleveland Landmarks Commission has already approved the demolition of the Wirth Home at 3119 Denison Ave. A Home that IMO (many others too) should be saved from the wrecking ball. There is still hope though as the Art House which owns the home currently does not have the funds available to do the domo. http://www.brooklyncentre.net/ http://media.fyre.co/OoaqFZWSKKhLALbx6q2i_Brooklyncentre1.JPG http://media.fyre.co/fvRtgtX2TUG7UXnH9LUO_Brooklyncentre3.JPG

Miscellaneous Ohio Political News
Garrett A. Morgan is my choice. He did more than most other well known AA from the CLE, or who spent time here. He was not born here, but spent most of his life here, and his impact on society as a whole throughout the world do to his inventions has probably had the greatest impact. Not sure if I would choose PS for a stature, but also not sure where else would be a place to honor him.
