  1. Nice pictures, but so sad another piece of the CLE's history being left to rot, and waiting for the wrecking ball.

"curbing police behavior"? When is the black community going to work on curbing black behavior?
  3. Thanks for the winter shots. But you will have to go back in the summer when all the wildflowers are in bloom. It is absolutely beautiful. The wildflowers stretch from just where the new Inner Belt Bridge is being constructed, to the firehouse on the river.I've been on this stretch many times already.
  4. After seeing the above shots of the Public Square work going on, I was reminded inside myself that I have a friend who works in the Key Tower pretty high up. I know this as she has already posted pictures from her great view of Public Square on her facebook page with the work that has started. I am going to try and get her to sign up on UrbanOhio and ask her to post pictures of the ongoing construction work on Public Square. I'll let everyone know asap.
  5. Getting Testy there KJP. And you are not my daddy.
  6. KJP, how many times have you had your place painted in the last 18 years? Do you remember any of the former colors? Point is, the mind in general does not remember mundane things like former paint colors, or when the lights went on at "Jacobs Field". Let's just be happy that it's a sign Spring is right around the corner, and so is opening day. YEA!!! GO TRIBE!!!
  7. Okay, this reminds me of something that would have happened in the late 70s and I know is a shot in the dark: a major warehouse(?) fire on the east bank of the river, we were on the Goodtime II and we got to watch the fireboats at work on it. The completely gutted building was still there at least in 1984 or so. I know how our memories are not always clear (ok, at least mine is not), but I wonder if you are thinking of the old abandoned House Boat that is tucked away in a dock right next to the old fire house (currently closed) at the end of Scranton Rd. across from Tower City. It would be on the west bank of the river.
  8. They are some pretty good shots of SF. I was just there last week for 6 days. But truth be told, how many of those 800,000 plus are homeless? Has to be at least 5-10% of the population. The homeless are everywhere, and you can surely smell them. And drugs!! I saw people openly sticking needles into themselves in the civic area of the city. And I was really surprised at how dirty SF is. For a tourist destination you would think they would keep the city cleaner. There was definitely some of the most beautiful architecture I seen in the US there. And in the civic area of the city, one would think you could be in Cleveland's Group Plan area the buildings are so similar, and just as beautiful.

Empty factories do not create more work for basic services like snow clearing, for which someone was sacked last week for under performance of duties and not following procedure. I'm not so sure that someone was sacked last week for under performance of duties. If my memory serves me right, there was a news story that the person you say was sacked actually held two positions, and Mayor Jackson took one of the positions away from him, but he kept all of the salary that he was making. Good old politics. Can anyone on this forum help us out here with what really happened?

The reason there are "not many quality candidates" each cycle is because this city is so bent on only electing "demon rats" into office each cycle. I, and many other people I know who live in the Cleveland city limits would prefer a non-democrat, but that is not likely to happen with NE Ohio being so far left. IMO the last great mayor the city of Cleveland had was George Voinovich.

I too remember the 1994 cold spell. I was living in Charlotte, NC at the time and had to catch a plane from Charlotte to Cleveland to attend a 50th B-day celebration for my sister. It was around Jan 25th of that year when I flew out of Charlotte. When I left my home to go to the airport in Charlotte the temperature was in the negative digits and I was flying north. I thought at the time I was crazy for going from -5 below to -15/-20 in Cleveland. But I love my sister and or course wanted to be there for her to celebrate the BIG 50 at the time. I'm getting kind of use to these below temperatures (NOT), as for the last 3 winters I have spent a lot of time in NE, and IA where it gets even colder on average than it does here in the CLE.

    HELL NO!
  13. Cleveland police just released what happened on twitter. The suspect befriended the victim throughout the course of the night (post strip clubs), probably with the plan all along to rob him. The second they entered the car together the suspect pulled a gun and took the money (Approximately 2600-4600). The victim gave the suspect the money. Here is what pisses me off. The suspect fired two shots ANYWAY. The whole thing is despicable. Ive never gotten in a car with someone I met that night, its just not using your brain. They say never blame the victim, but COME ON MAN. Come-on BelievelandD1, do you really think the victim is to blame here just because they got into a car with someone they just met the same night. You say you have never gotten into a car with someone you met the first time, but have you ever had a one night stand with someone you just met at the bar, or somewhere? Would you blame yourself if you caught a STD from that same person. I bet not! So why are you wanting to blame the victim of this crime? No victim of a crime, no matter how dumb it may seem as to why they got themselves into the situation should be blamed for a criminal act against themselves.
  14. If the interior designers think bringing back the 60-70's in a brand new hotel is the "hip" thing to do, then the interior design team needs to be let go, and a new design team must be hired that would truly make the Cleveland Downtown Hilton a talked about place to stay. NO brown carpet, NO 60-70's furniture, please start over with the interior design of the rooms, and the public areas too.
  15. Thanks for the tour of D.C. I have never been there (sorry to say), but its on the bucket list. Absolutely great shots of this neighborhood. Also inspires me to keep fighting to save the Brooklyn Centre neighborhood of Cleveland in which I live in where over 90% of the homes were build between 1900 - 1915, and are still standing.
  16. KJP, that picture of the CLE's 3 tallest structures was taken around 1961-1962 I think. The reason being I do not see the "Peace Memorial" in the picture, and it was put up in 1964. Thanks for the look back.
  17. I agree! I too do not see the NuCLEus project taking away from other apt. projects announced, and it the works. The majority of the apt. projects announced are to be in rehabbed/repurposed buildings vs NuCLEus which is new. Of the three new apt/condo projects announced for downtown CLE in the last number of years, two (E. 6th & Euclid, and the proposed Ferrari project) are either already dead, or most likely dead. I could be wrong though. The East Bank Apt. project is the only new project currently under construction. I am not counting the CSU apts. as those were build for the most part to meet the housing demand for students of CSU who want to live on campus. Think about it, on the thread that discuss downtown living there are plenty of reports showing a very high demand for apts downtown. The projection is for 20k residents living in downtown CLE by 2020/2021. If these projections for demand for downtown living are correct, with a population of 20k vs the current 13k, that means an increase of 7k more residents in approx. 5-6 years. With that many new/potential residents, 500 new apts/condo's in the NuCLEus project, would definitely not have a negative impact on the other already announced projects. The NuCLEus project will attract those who not only want new apts/cond's over rehabbed/repurposed buildings, but those who can afford the higher rents too. 500 apt's/condo's in a downtown that will need approx. 4k-5k apt's/condo's by 2020/2021 only meets about 10% of the future need. The 200,000 sq ft of office space as part of the Nucleus project is not really a lot of office space for a downtown that has approx. 24-25 million sq ft already. The office space need thread for downtown CLE has said there is going to be a need for new class "A" office space, and that for any company looking to either move downtown, of relocate from their current downtown office space into other class "A" office space in the near future, there are very few options if the need is for 100,00 sq ft or more. So the 200,00 sq ft Nucleus is proposing as part of its project would help downtown IMO. To me the riskiest part of the Nucleus project is the hotel rooms, but I could be wrong. What with all the hotel rooms currently under construction, can the CLE support another hotel? I don't know.
  18. I obviously am familiar with Stark's WHD plans, but were there other times that plans of his never came to fruition? You all are making it sound like he's known to be a super flaky developer. I don't think many here are trying to make Stark out to be a flaky developer, just that there have been so many announced projects over the last quarter century and the majority have not had a ground breaking, or steel rising, including Stark's Warehouse Project. Remember Ameritrust Center and the glass tower after it, both announced for the Jacobs PS site. How about Courthouse Square on Lakeside Ave. just west of west 9th street. There was also plans for the Museum of Transportation & Industry on the lakefront; the never constructed condo tower on E. 6th & Euclid, etc.. These are just a few of the un-built projects that were announced in the past. I will smile a lot more when I see ground broken, and steel rising for NuCLEus.
  19. Ditto!

The E. 12th spot of land between St. Clair and Rockwell Ave. is a really good spot. This piece of land has been unused since One Cleveland Center was erected approx. 30 years ago. There is also the gym above the parking garage of One Cleveland Center which possibly could be updated/renovated to be family friendly (I think the gym is currently closed, and has been for a long time). With a playground, and the gym, there is a spot for families to go during both good and bad weather. Also, there is plenty of street parking, and of course the parking garage for One Cleveland Center. My reason for this being my #1 pick is I think the area of E. 12th from Lakeside to Euclid Avenue and blocks moving east are going to be the most family friendly areas for downtown living in the future with future development. My #2 spot would be the land where the Ferrari development was proposed. There is enough land there for a good sized playground, it is right by the just voted most family friendly ballpark in America, and I also know there is in the works an approx. 30 foot tall Superman Statue/Sculpture which a local artist is working on to have erected on this same piece of land. Yes, I have seen drawings of it for those who want to know. If a playground would be built at NCH, most of us know that that proposed development has a school segment to it, so if a school ends up as part of the NCH development, there should be a playground built with it. To me Perk Park is not a good spot as this park was just rebuilt, and I like it just as it is. The mall locations are too far from any residential, and Settlers Landing is to small. The spot between the Old Federal Court House, and the Old Public Library is a pretty good spot as E. 2nd St. is less then a hundred feet long and not really used by vehicle traffic in any significant way anyway, it is next to the Library, and there has been talk for a long time to close this road and put a small park there. But it is not near any residential developments.
  21. Ditto with CbusTransit, OC is not a high crime area like it was back in the 70's - 90's. Once W. 25th started to take off, and more people started shopping & dining in OC, the crime rate has gone down. To a person looking to commit a crime, does anyone really thing that person would first think, oh wait, I cannot commit this crime because the parking lot is in front of the shopping center vs. the back of the center. And camera's don't matter to potential law breakers either (in general). Just look at all the great shots we get of bank robbers. If I was thinking of robbing something (and I'm not), it surely would not be a bank. They have more camera's then almost any other type of building in the country. My conclusion of bank robbers is they do it not for the money, but the food, water, shelter, and clothing they get from robbing the bank. And these are only the basic needs "benefits" of robbing a bank if caught (and over 90% are caught).
  22. Why should Cleveland be the one to have to annex E. Cleveland by itself, possibly? If E. Cleveland has to no longer exist, let each of the surrounding communities (Cleveland, Euclid, Cleveland Heights), all take a part of E. Cleveland to annex into its own community. IMO, this would only be fair. Cleveland should not be alone in taking on all of E. Cleveland's problems.
  23. The better plan would be to link Brooklyn Center with the switchback IMO. It would hopefully be a cheaper option, the switchback would be directly connected to Denison Ave. (and the Denison Ave bike lanes if they are a part of the Denison Ave. reconstruction). Having a hiking/biking trail along the Big Creek Valley is also a good idea, and could link up to trails already in place by the zoo, plus the Towpath Trail, but because Calgary Park is so small and out of the way from so many other areas of Brooklyn Center, and would be so hard to connect too from the Big Creek Valley do to its topography, I still think the switchback is the best option.
  24. The Harmody Park trail ends at Jennings Road, and is not connected to the Brooklyn Center neighborhood. It is actually in the Old Brooklyn neighborhood, across the Mill Creek Valley. Where the trail ends from Hormody Park down on Jennings Road, one has to basically ride on Jennings Road, and turn onto Old Harvard Ave to get to the Towpath Trail currently. Or stay on Jennings Road going north, and pick up the trail behind Steelyard Commons. Sorry, meant to say Big Creek Valley, not Mill Creek.
  25. Allow me to turn the question around: what corporate benefit is there to a downtown headquarters location for a manufacturing company? I can see why a law firm, bank, accounting firm, or creative firms like advertisers or net startups would be there. But for a company making components or durable goods, I honestly don't see the corporate benefits, and that's the business I'm in. I agree, not every corporate HQ needs to be in the downtown area. Would it be better if they were, or course it would. But let's be glad Eaton, Parker, and AG to name a few, all made the decision to keep their HQ's in the Cleveland area. What is sad, but at the moment cannot be changed, is the fact that Cleveland has lost so many HQ'd co's in the last 20+ years (TRW, CVS {formally Revco}, OfficeMax, ect). Cleveland is fortunate enough to have a short commute to almost any direction from the core of the city, so if employees of Eaton, Parker, and AG to name a few, want to live downtown, they can, and still not have to drive a half hour or more to get to work as does so many commuters in LA, NYC, or Chicago. P&G in Cincinnati has its corp HQ in the heart of downtown, and so does Applied Industrial Materials here in Cleveland, so there are still consumer and manufacturing co's that stay in their cities core. Let's be glad for what we have, and work to bring other corp HQ's to not only the heart of downtown, but any area of Cuyahoga County. Let me dream a little here. If I could have my desires, HIMSS would move its HQ from Chicago; CVS from (I think) CT; Cardinal Health from Columbus, and many others that are in my dreams to downtown CLE, the city I love so much, and want to thrive even more then it already does. But in order for the CLE to gain corp HQ's from other area's it has to have the educated workforce co's need, and other requirements too. Studies are showing that the CLE is gaining a higher educated workforce, and hopefully this will cause my dreams to come to fruition in the future. For now, let's work to keep the co's we have, grow them here, and show the world that the CLE is a great place to live, work, and play.
