Columbus: Easton Developments and News
The above info was previously posted in this thread. It came from info posted on the now-discontinued CU forum (RIP) and was about the possibility of new apartment buildings coming to the Easton development. It even included a conceptual site plan. Well, that conceptual possibility can now be confirmed. A January 22nd story in the Dispatch (linked below) reported that new apartments will be coming to Easton, and was confirmed by Georgetown Co., the developer of Easton. A further confirmation came today in another Dispatch article reporting a tax abatement deal in the works between the City and the developer: High-end apartments next on developer's agenda for Easton By Marla Rose, The Columbus Dispatch Posted: January 22, 2017 - 5:00 AM Easton Town Center is one of the premier lifestyle centers in the country, offering visitors numerous shopping, dining and entertainment options. Its developer would like to put more "mixed" in the mixed-use development by adding hundreds - possibly thousands - of apartments there. ... The effort to add residential options is in the early stages. There aren't yet renderings or floor plans for the apartments, which are planned for open land north of the Hilton Columbus at Easton, near Stelzer Road. ( . . . ) Adam Flatto, CEO of the Georgetown Co., the developer of Easton, emphasizes that the units will be built to the high standards that one would expect for high-end apartments next to shops such as Tiffany, Burberry and Tesla Motors. ... "The land is extremely valuable," he said, and he cited the cost of high-end finishes in apartments and of building the infrastructure for a walkable, urban-style apartment complex versus a suburban one that lacks sidewalks, curbs and park-like common areas. ( . . . ) The area has some rental units: About 500 apartments across Easton Way to the south of Easton opened around the same time as the lifestyle center (in 1999). If Easton's developers had it to do over again, they said they probably would have handled those differently, integrating them more with the shopping district. ... "The project that Continental Real Estate did at the time was brave, and it's been successful," said L Brands founder Leslie H. Wexner, the mastermind behind Easton. "I don't think in hindsight, though, we were fussy enough about the quality of the construction and the finishes. From then until now, there has been a much greater acceptance in the world about urbanization ... being in walking distance to things is much more obvious. It was insightful, but maybe not as robust as it could've been." MORE: http://www.dispatch.com/business/20170122/high-end-apartments-next-on-developers-agenda-for-easton So there was a groundbreaking or going to be one west of Nordstrom along Morse; will we be seeing apartments here?

Wheeling: Developments and News
Thanks for posting, South Wheeling is extra blighted compared to most of the rest of the city. My maternal grandmother's family immigrated to South Wheeling like many others did from Poland. Right across the street from Susie's is the P.A.P. Club and a couple blocks over St. Alphonsus Church, another Polish establishment. My pap worked at La Belle nail plant for 40 years, unfortunately it was demolished. It is on the NRHP and at one time was the largest nail factory in the world which gave Wheeling it's nickname of "The Nail City."

Supposedly the building and apartments were recently renovated. Otherwise I would 100000000% agree.

Wheeling: Developments and News
Yet nearly two entire city blocks have been demo'd in the past two years. The former Ernie's Esquire and the Chinese restaurant across the street; I'll believe it when I see it. That was before he took office IIRC. The current mayor is incredibly forward thinking compared to older ones. He is always out there trying to promote redevelopment whereas most previous mayors seemed content with the status quo. I agree that he is, but also he was the mayor when Cork & Bottle was demolished, sorry to be petty but it's the way of doing business in Wheeling. I hope that it changes throughout his term.

The powers that be in Wheeling won't let that happen unfortunately. They'd rather tear down and sit on the land than restore and redevelop.

Steubenville / Upper Ohio Valley: Developments and News
Being from Wheeling I really appreciated your post over on SSP. The bones that the valley has are really good but years of neglect have really taken their toll. However in some of the older sections of Pittsburgh they look like the valley as well so it's kind of just a culture thing I guess. North Wheeling could literally be Wheeling's "Short North" if there were jobs to support it, they really need to do a better job at attracting business outside of fracking, etc.

Ohio Census / Population Trends & Lists
What a conundrum for OMB would it be if Cleveland was like Columbus and had annexed a few far flung areas along its sprawl path that were actually outside of Cuyahoga County? For instance, what if a small part of Northfield or Sagamore Hills was actually the city of Cleveland? This isn't all that far fetched as I would say those areas are at least as connected to Cleveland as Polaris is to Columbus. Would part of the city of Cleveland be in the Akron MSA then? Polaris is actually in the city of Columbus so I'm not sure where you're going with this part. In general if you want a similar comparison to what Dayton is to Cincinnati, I would offer Youngstown to Cleveland or even Youngstown to Pittsburgh. People from the Mahoning Valley commute to both areas to work. Or I would say Sidney to Cincinnati is comparable to Canton to Cleveland.

Columbus: Short North Developments and News
wpcc88 replied to buildingcincinnati's post in a topic in Central & Southeast Ohio Projects & ConstructionThere was an older church on the site that faced Park St. That was replaced in 2008 or so. Had to be earlier than that; I've been here since 2006 and I don't remember it being built. The cathedral on High St. was built in the late 80s or early 90s. The original smaller church (which faced Park St) was torn down around 2008 and replaced with a larger building. You can see the change on google streetview. Maybe I was just too drunk at that time to remember that project. Even though I was taking CRP classes at OSU.

wpcc88 replied to buildingcincinnati's post in a topic in Central & Southeast Ohio Projects & ConstructionRight behind it the Acorn Distributors building is the white one next to the massive factory. Will be interesting to see what this looks like in 5 years once the hotel in the bottom left hand side is completed as well.

wpcc88 replied to buildingcincinnati's post in a topic in Central & Southeast Ohio Projects & ConstructionNot the right area of town for a 10+ floor tower, think about it. "With grand view's of State Route 315" Infill is fine in this area.

Columbus: Short North Developments and News
wpcc88 replied to buildingcincinnati's post in a topic in Central & Southeast Ohio Projects & ConstructionIf it means pushing the project back though I'm not for it; this is going to be a hotel in the premier part of our city. This is only going to enhance the experience for the guests and make our city look good. If they want green space hit a suburb, that area looks like trash during the winter and is worn down and grease stained the rest of the year.

Columbus: University District: South Campus Gateway
I don't see how that's possible unless portions are pre-fab... Had to be a typo, just look at any of the big builds in the Short North and you can see that this will be almost impossible. It would've said in the approval if they were prefab or not but judging by the steel framing that doesn't seem like a possibility.

Columbus: Short North Developments and News
wpcc88 replied to buildingcincinnati's post in a topic in Central & Southeast Ohio Projects & ConstructionYea it's a possibility that we get some crossover for a couple of days or a week at most. Park Street is mostly exterior finishes now. The main thing will be if they've put the air conditioner on the roofs yet, for the sizes required it will take a tower crane to get them in place. Rumored in the next couple of weeks, weather is playing a factor. Also hearing that there will be one at Summit & 5th, keep an eye out for that as well.

Columbus: Downtown: Grant Hospital Redevelopments
Children's hospital has generally used tower cranes, even when there is space to operate with a crawler crane. https://www.google.com/maps/@39.9522714,-82.9839419,3a,75y,50.52h,95.65t/data=!3m7!1e1!3m5!1sBKCPv4SNMOpOdB1uW0eeAg!2e0!5s20110601T000000!7i13312!8i6656?hl=en https://www.google.com/maps/@39.9524141,-82.9875668,3a,75y,337.16h,96.15t/data=!3m7!1e1!3m5!1swvs_imKJxvunoaJEMzUziQ!2e0!5s20160801T000000!7i13312!8i6656?hl=en Kokosing however does not, most of the operators are "their guys" and they own a lot of crawlers outright, as is seen right across the interstate where the split project is continuing. As much as it would be cool it's not necessary for many different reasons on that site currently.
