  1. Relating to the Moxy Hotel development: "Coming in mid- to late-February there will be a short-term (two to three days) full closure of E. Hubbard Ave. between High St. and N. Pearl St. " I wonder if that's when the tower crane is going to be constructed. It would make sense considering the site seems to be fully excavated. I haven't been by the site recently so I'm not sure if a crane base is already in place or not. They typically try to do that on weekends so who knows, my guess is what Pablo said for utility work. They've been working to sort of meet in the middle between 5th & Goodale. I'm not sure who is providing the crane for this one yet, but can ask. Yea, do some recon work for us. I'm just wondering if we could end up with 4 cranes up at the same time within a couple blocks of each other in the Short North. Well the Park Street one will be coming down shortly. I just got business with some of the crane rental places so I pry every chance I get :).

  3. How in the world were they issued permits then!? I would tell the state to shove it!
  4. Well considering the amount of development going on in even some of the mid-sized Ohio cities I'm not sure. But if I were a steel erector in Toledo, Akron, Canton, etc I would be opening a satellite office in Central Ohio. The concrete contractors do have them here, two of the biggest in the country are headquartered in Cincinnati. The one I work with regularly to sell my product is working on Facebook in New Albany, Nationwide, Woods and two of the Short North projects(about to start a third and fourth). The other was working on this project, Edwards, campus and a few others. Where I have found the numbers effecting production are in the classical trades, HVAC, plumbing and electrical. That is where I have seen the most out of town poaching because the in town guys can't find help.
  5. This building is moving at a snail's pace. I think the shortage of construction workers is really hurting some of these projects. Well they're using a TON of concrete and steel for these buildings. You have two large concrete companies, two large concrete contractors and two or three minimally sized steel erectors trying to do this all at once. It took me a year to figure out that it's not the lack of laborers(even though yes technically there is a shortage) but rather a lack of businesses to handle all of this in Columbus. I work in the industry and needless to say we're busy as ever right now. Equipment rental companies, suppliers, sub contractors all had record numbers last year and it didn't stop in the normal "slow" months. We should enjoy this while we can because Ohio's economy as a whole right now is better than it's ever been in the 2000's.
  6. I could foresee that happening in the next decade or so, no question.
  7. Not sure if it's mentioned in the article but the long proposed hotel on Olentangy River Rd behind Cap City Diner is getting site prepped as we speak. I also do not see it on the list; the building that was there has been demo'd for over a year but equipment is on site.
  8. It's done all the time with buildings of various sizes; think the Short North Donatos, a one story building that looks like two.
  9. This would be the perfect time for an outside grocer to make a BIG play in Columbus. They were hiring real estate folks a few months ago, but hopefully they can be the urban Fresh Thyme.
  10. Arshot built the taller, tower addition to the 5/3 building at State and High in 1998 (but no longer own it), and renovated the former Woolworths across High St into CVS/Subway and offices (topped with an LED screen) around that time as well. They also built the brick office building facing Bicentennial Park (directly behind the Millennial Tower lot, though they also no longer are the owner) I want to say around 2002. Before that they were active in the Brewery District and still own the Worley Building and much of the renovated Hoster Brewing complex there (and freeway adjacent LED screen). Most recently they redid the smaller brick office building at State and High and connected it into their neighboring Woolworths project (while also of course adding a massive LED ad screen wrap) edit: cbussoccer beat me to it! :) Just barely lol. Do you know of any failed high profile projects by Arshot, other than SPARC? SPARC is the only one that comes to mind for me. If that's the case, I find it quite humorous that the general consensus seems to be there is no way Millennial Tower happens because SPARC never happened. Millennial Tower is a mixed-use tower in a quickly growing part of downtown. SPARC was an extremely ambitious race track based idea in a dead part of town. I'm not sure the two are comparable. Thank you both for answering my question, albeit that it was supposed to be somewhat sarcastic. Their website is as dated as their most recent success. I really hope this happens because I want everything proposed, especially this in its newly approved form. I'm just not going to hold my breath until the first piece of steel is raised. All in all I don't think SPARC was that outrageous of a plan and he had some big names involved. We have a very good car culture here in Central Ohio and even with that it was a BIG swing and a miss somehow. Would've been very nice to have around during Goodguy's, the races up at Mid-Ohio(who they should've included), they added MAG(not the best business partner but great for the brands) and probably should've included the Byers/Ricart/Germain families.
  11. 711 is VERY noticeable from 670 WB, you can see the steel frame right now.
  12. Can we confirm that ANY of Arshot's proposals have ever been built?
  13. A lot of dirt being moved at Summit & 5th... again sorry for the quality not the best intersection to get pictures
  14. The streetscape project is causing an absolute mess! Especially with all of the current building construction.
  15. There have been rumors floating around that Ohio State is seeking out companies like Apple and Google to infill the neighborhood behind the campus side of Gateway. At this point those two and Amazon could all be in the running for some of that land and cheap labor!
  16. My guess is to make it look uniform and the porte cochere if you will in the middle kind of hinders the weight of the finish. Not an engineer but that's my engineer's guess.
  17. Sorry for the poor photo but since Saturday all of the pilings are in the ground(they've been my 7:30am wakeup call at my girlfriends since Monday :) )
  18. For linebackers that's really not an issue; it's a volatile position just like running back. There are constantly linebackers retiring and getting hurt so teams carry a lot more of them. He'll put up great numbers and get drafted in the late 1st-early 2nd based on that, his film and ability to be a 3 down player.
  19. The longest standing tower crane in Columbus is officially down!!!
  20. Town Hall coming to Columbus: http://www.columbusunderground.com/cleveland-based-restaurant-townhall-will-open-in-the-short-north-next-year-ls1
  21. Yea I think once the Trautman building is completed that will help as well. Last time I went past there was a lot of equipment that is specifically used for masonry work. Most of that equipment needs flat ground to work properly so that could push it back a bit as well unless they use the alley. But I remember someone from the company managing the construction C-H's building saying this spring, so let's see we have about 5 months to find out :).
  22. Rumor is the spring time for that as well, not sure if that's still accurate or not.
  23. There was one going up or coming down somewhere this afternoon in the short north. I was on my way to the airport when I saw it so I was unable to turn around and grab a picture. Based on what I saw from 670 this morning all three cranes were still standing in the Short North. I didn't see another crane going up, but I did see a smaller crane around the UDF/Haiku site, so that one could be building a crane today. It was at the UDF site, from the angle that I saw it yesterday it appeared to be building a crane. Hmm that's odd. I wouldn't think the UDF site would need a tower crane. Last time I was down there it appeared that the steel framing had been topped out. *It was the crane on High Street from the UDF location. From the angle I saw it, it appeared to be building another crane but that wasn't the case.
  24. There is a crawler crane on site here and pilings going in, will try to get a picture this week.
