  1. I wouldn't doubt it, since Macy's is HQ'd here. Back when Macy's was Lazarus, Shillito's, etc, the location was on 7th Street. They received either a tax break or subsidy to move to their current location. This happened in the early to mid 90s. Unfortunately, this store is definitely smaller than their 7th and Race location. The old location had seven stories plus a basement with marked-down merchandise and clothing. There was also a hair salon and a coffee shop. Honestly, I think they would have closed that store years ago if it wasn't for their headquarters being downtown.
  2. These are my biggest reasons for supporting streetcars and light rail.
  3. It would be nice to reduce traffic on I75 so that it won't need to be widened. Mass transit such as light rail could be used to reduce that demand.
  4. Good news...there is a need for a card shop downtown. The closing of the Hallmark store years ago, followed by the closing of M. Hopple has left a void.

When I bought my bicycle in the fall of 2007, my husband and I were talking to another customer at the bicycle shop. He said that he had been hit by a driver, and if he was telling the truth, it had to have been intentional. He was was riding in the right hand lane on a road that had three lanes in each direction. There was only one car going in his direction, and driver came over to his lane to hit him.
  6. I agree. I think this is ridiculous. While I think it's good to encourage people to eat more produce and buy it locally, I think telling people to eat less meat may backfire. I do eat meat and dairy products, but I could easily go a few days without eating any meat. However, I suddenly have an urge to go to Avril's and buy several pounds of steaks and sausages.
  7. Yes, there is a Kroger in Over-the-Rhine. There are also Krogers in West Price Hill, Walnut Hills, Corryville, and Westwood. These neighborhoods are fortunate to have these stores there, but there is still a distinct difference over what is offered at say the Walnut Hills Kroger and the Kroger in Hyde Park. These differences often perpetuate the cycle of poverty and the problems that go along with it (i.e. malnutrition and health problems). I would not expect the Kroger locations mentioned to carry the same products as Hyde Park. For example, I wouldn't think there would be a huge demand for organic products on the west side of town. I'm sure there are also products that sell better on the west side of town than they do in Hyde Park. I would think the stores sell what there is a demand for in the neighborhood. If people want specific items in that store, they should tell the store manager. That said, I am disappointed that there is a large selection of 40s in the OTR Kroger. But, I have heard a rumor that they are carrying some organic products.
  8. It was, and I remember shopping there when I was in high school. I think the additional malls in the area also killed it. When Tower Place first opened, several of the stores had at most one other location in the area. That changed as more malls were built. I also don't think the mall was well-marketed.
  9. fye, which used to be Camelot, is still there.
  10. That would be wonderful. I know I can order anything I want off of Amazon, but it's not the same as walking around a bookstore and actually picking up the books.
  11. I really hope Huff does a good job with Tower Place. Brentano's is a big loss. I received an email telling me where the other Waldenbooks/Borders locations are in the area, but they are not convenient. I think it's odd that the dollar store only had a temporary lease, especially after all the press over it. It seems strange to take a storefront that size and redo it for only a few months. Last weekend I noticed that it was still full of merchandise.
  12. The Gym at Carew Tower http://downtowncincinnati.com/cgi-bin/listestab.cgi?est_id=1261 There are at least three athletic clubs in downtown Cincinnati, plus the YMCA in OTR.
  13. The coffee at my work is awful, and I'm not supplying everyone on the floor with Starbucks or some gourmet coffee
  14. I wonder if the medical offices that are currently connected to the hospital on Boudinot Ave will remain or if they will move as well. There is also the health club located there as well.
  15. I do own a few coffee makers, and I do make coffee at home. However, I'm not going to run home while I'm at work to make coffee. Also, many mornings I'm in a hurry, and it's easy to just stop somewhere to get coffee. I do agree that Starbucks locations with a drive through seems wrong. It really bugs me to see it. I usually go to the Starbucks that are downtown. I agree that there are many great locally owned coffee shops, and I support those as well. However, most of these have limited hours.
  16. Exactly! I drink tons of water myself, and I do want something else that is calorie free at times. Their regular coffee is under $2 a cup, which is line with most coffee houses. I don't get the $3-$4 drinks too often for several reasons.
  17. I drink half-caf myself. If I've had too many of those in a day, then I go with decaf. I'm not thrilled with the idea of not brewing decaf in the afternoons. I may go less often.

That makes a little more sense. I thought Cunningham was a Xavier fan.

*sigh* Cunningham bugs me more and more.
  20. I like this idea a lot. We used to have boats that took people from Downtown to Coney... My mom has mentioned these boats several times. If it weren't for these boats, she probably would not have gotten to Coney very often if at all. It would be awful if River Downs closed, but I have not been there is years. I feel like part of the problem.
  21. I am sorry to hear that. That is terrible they had to go through that.
  22. I was curious. People constantly ask me if I am safe downtown because they "hear" about things that they usually can not back up. Last time I was on Glenway Ave. last was yesterday. With many family members living on the west side (and my allergist has an office on Glenway itself), I'm in that area several times a month. I have shopped at the stores at Glenway Crossing, Western Hills Plaza, and other nearby stores several times during the past month, and I thought it was fine. I'm not discounting that there could be some crime, but are things as bad as people say? Or maybe I just am not in the area enough to see? I just do not feel unsafe when stop at Home Depot near Dillards or pick up a few things at Bigg's on Crookshank. I probably should have clarified that I was rarely by myself as a kid walking to stores. I was usually with neighborhood kids or family members. When I was in high school (early 90s), I do remember trouble at Western Hills Plaza. We didn't go there without an adult.
  23. David, David, David, you are so confused! Good thing I'm here to help you out! :wink2: What I meant was that the criminal element hanging around the Glenway area could park their cars in the retail establishments, walk up the catwalk to get easy access to the subdivision, do their damage, and quickly get out!! Does this happen frequently? Are there hundreds of police reports with this happening? I did not grow up in this particular subdivision, but I did grow up in one not too far away (Muddy Creek and Westbourne area). There were a few catwalks from my subdivision to Werk Road. I remember walking on this quite a bit to go to shops on Werk or even Glenway. It was especially great before having my driver's license, and a group of kids could go without having to get parents to take us out there. It would be sad to see them go.
  24. That is terrible news about Pigall's. I hope Jean-Robert really does stay in the area.
