Is Oakley Cycles a good store? I am thinking about either buying a new bike or repairing my existing one, and this store is only 5-10 minutes from my house. Plus, this would give me a good excuse to eat at one of the great restaurants in Oakley Square. :)
  2. ^ this is kind of good news. If they are undergoing an extensive renovation, then they must have plans to stay open there. :)

I like Dewey's the best - red sauce with spinnach and sun-dried tomatoes. I'm also burnt out on LaRosa's. Their pizza tastes sort of bland now.
  4. I can understand having a HOA if there are common areas or shared walls. It's pretty much necessary then. Other than that, I do not think that I would like living in one. If it's my house, I should have the right to paint it whatever color I want. If I want to put a political sign in my yard or a sign advertising a church festival, I should have that right. I've heard that some HOA's will not allow gardens. I also do not see why it's that big of a deal if a neighbor is very busy and doesn't take their Christmas lights down until February. There are so many more important things to worry about. And if someone wants to put up a pink flamingo lawn display to celebrate their birthday, then go for it! Bottom line - I would hate to pay someone so they can tell me what color I must paint my house or that I'm only allowed to hang white Christmas lights on my house. And of course, the lights must be taken down on January 1.
  5. Columbia Township is divided up into several different parts. I once heard at a Pleasant Ridge Community Council meeting that several of the residents in Ridgewood are embarrassed to be part of Columbia Township. The Highland Ridge area in Columbia Township is mostly commercial. There are not many houses in that area. I think that is why so much of the area is an eye sore. It's like the trustees don't really care so much because they have very few residents living in that area, so not as many of their residents are making the actual complaints.
  6. I'm curious to see how this works out. I'm willing to try it out myself.
  7. Based on my observations of Ridge and Highland, they have a long way to go!
  8. The lady was also wearing a dress and high-heels while doing this. I always wear dresses and high-heels when I clean my house. Just kidding!
  9. Wow, that is so vague!
  10. Since they call themselves "The Cincinnati Enquirer," it would be nice to seem them actually cover the good stuff about downtown and the neighborhoods within the city. I get the impression that the Enquirer only likes to cover positive stories if it's in Northern Kentucky, West Chester, or Mason. If it's going on in the urban core, then forget it!
  11. That is pathetic...are people really that lazy? I do have to say that I hate automated parking attendants. They have failed at several locations. Many of them do not seem to work properly and are sometimes hard to understand. As a result, a long line of cars will form. I've also seen situations where garage management has to work long hours in order to constantly fix the machines.
  12. Not a new Walgreens - just one moving. It will be nice to have the Walgreens in one place. It is kind of strange to have the current store divided into two seperate pieces. However, the current location is only 1/2 a block from where I work. However, it won't kill me to walk another 1.5 blocks to pick up my prescriptions. :)
  13. ^ If I remember correctly, the Shillito's became Shillito-Rikes in the early 80s. Shillito-Rikes stores then became Lazarus in mid-80s - I think '86 or something like that. McAlpin's parent company (Merchantile) was bought by Dillard's in the 90s. I think it was late '90s. By the time this happened, the McAlpin's downtown had already closed, and Dillard's was not interested in having a downtown store. :( Of course, I'm basing this all on memory, so I may be a little off. :-)
  14. Wow! What were they thinking - "I'll rob this place because there is a sidewalk in front of it?!?!" Of course extra lighting will always increase crime. What was their argument against building a Metro RTA park-n-ride?
  15. ^ The old Shillito's department store was great! They had everything - books, music, clothing, a hair salon, coffee shop, candy counter, etc. I really do miss the old Shillito's. Wow, I think this post is making me age a few years! ;)
  16. I do not understand why no one bothers putting in sidewalks when building new neighborhoods. Even more, it amazes me that people refer to these new neighborhoods as being extremely family-friendly. I certainly would not want to live in a neighborhood like this, especially if I had children. Do people really find it acceptable to push a baby's stroller in the middle of the street? THat sounds like a tragedy waiting to happen.
  17. ^ downtown Cincy had several department stores in the 50s. Probably about eight or so. Most of those stores (such as Pogue's)do not exist anymore at any location.
  18. township = careless growth
  19. ^ I will post when I find out.
  20. Downtown real estate is often expensive along with the costs of rehabbing an old building. When you are talking about buildings 100 years or older, you never know what you'll find. Some of the building rehabs involve gutting out the inside of the building and installing new plumbing and electrical wiring. Some of these lofts also have upscale finishes such as granite countertops in the kitchen and bathrooms and hardwood floors throughout the whole unit. These features alone are also expensive.

Are you talking about Cabana? By Fore and Aft before it sunk? That is a cool place. I think those gaudy palm trees have been mass-produced. I've seen them at several other places, too.

You make an excellent point. I grew up in Green Township, which is on the west side of town. Most of my life I thought that Cincinnati was pretty boring. When I went to school at XU, I discovered other parts of town, including Hyde Park and Mt. Lookout. I decided then that I would move away from the west side. Some people do refer to me as a traitor for doing so, but my husband and I bought a house in Pleasant Ridge three years ago. I have to say that my opinion of Cincinnati started changing when I was in college, and it's really changing now that I live in PR. I feel that there is more to do outside of Western Hills, and right now I have no desire to move back.
  23. City of Cincinnati does offer curbside recycling to single family homes and apartment buildings with four units or less. I am amazed by everything they accept.
