Hyperloop
Not technically Hyperloop but... Chicago Says Elon Musk’s Company Will Build Tunnels and Electric Cars to Go to O’Hare New York Times By Julie Bosman and Mitch Smith June 13, 2018 https://www.nytimes.com/2018/06/13/us/chicago-ohare-elon-musk-rahm-emanuel.html If completed as planned, each electric vehicle — called a “skate” — would transport up to 16 riders and their luggage. The vehicles could leave downtown and O’Hare as frequently as every 30 seconds, the city says. They would exceed 100 miles per hour and make the entire trip from downtown to O’Hare in 12 minutes. Chicago taps Elon Musk’s Boring Company to build high-speed transit tunnels that would tie Loop with O'Hare Chicago Tribune Bill Ruthhart and John ByrneContact Reporters June 13, 2018 http://www.chicagotribune.com/news/local/politics/ct-met-ohare-high-speed-transit-elon-musk-boring-company-20180613-story.html Autonomous 16-passenger vehicles would zip back and forth at speeds exceeding 100 mph in tunnels between the Loop and O’Hare International Airport under a high-speed transit proposal being negotiated between Mayor Rahm Emanuel’s City Hall and billionaire tech entrepreneur Elon Musk’s The Boring Co., city and company officials have confirmed.

NOACA has received and reviewed/interviewed all qualified candidates. Any information on the finalists and which firm will be recommended for approval from the Board? I can't find anything on the NOACA website. I did find a sign in sheet for the Pre-Proposal meeting, but that is as far as my investigative skills took me. I'm no KJP.

2018 U.S. House of Representatives
Grant Goodrich, a former Marine and Annapolis and Columbia graduate, seems to be the most likely Democratic candidate for the 16th (Renacci's vacated seat). This podcast is a really good (maybe long) way to get to know the candidate. https://www.theclecast.com/episode-120-grant-goodrich-oh-16-congressional-candidate/

^^^ I agree Dave. There are a ton of out of state contractors in NEO right now. The Nexus pipeline is also creating a big demand for workers.

NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO I've never really understood the love for this place. Don't get me wrong, I like their Polish Boy, but the ribs and chicken are just ok. It seems to almost be regarded as a Cleveland culinary "must try" for out of towners. I wouldn't agree.

Do rents go down in the fall and winter?
From what I've heard...There are far fewer options in the the fall and winter. Most landlords like to keep the cycle ending and beginning in the summer for the university students but more importantly the residencies at the hospitals begin in the summer and these two groups swallow up most of the rental stock on the eastside.

2018 U.S. House of Representatives
The DCCC announced last year that the targets in the Ohio are 1st District-Steve Chabot, 7th District-Bob Gibbs and 12th District Bob Tibieri (vacated). Conversely, the NRCC announced last year that their targets in Ohio would be 13th District-Tim Ryan. I would think the 12th and now the 16th Districts have moved up in priority for the Dems to try to take back seats, now that the incumbents have vacated.

2018 U.S. House of Representatives
All 16 seats are up for grabs in November, and outside of a couple districts there isn't much on here about them. Currently, there are 11 Republicans, 4 Democrats and 1 vacant. With gerrymandering most of the incumbents appear to be safe. What are the races that are not a foregone conclusion? Any chance Dems pick up 4 seats in this midterm? Ohio Department of Transportation (ODOT) Projects & News
I'm no expert on roundabout design but I sometimes play one at work. Both of these intersections have right of way constraints and sight distance restraints and appear (from google maps ;) to be pretty low volume. I wouldn't think these would make good candidates for a roundabout. Ideally, the center of a roundabout is offset from the approaches to the roundabout entrances. In other words, it isn't just a circle centered around the intersection of streets. The sweeping movements into the roundabout make it work better. That would not be possible in these existing scenarios.

Cleveland: Friendship Baptist Church, (Temple Tifereth Israel) 5600 Central Ave
http://images.ulib.csuohio.edu/cdm/singleitem/collection/sacred/id/8/rec/1 Architect:Lehman and Schmidt https://case.edu/ech/articles/l/lehman-and-schmitt/ Anyone know anything about this church? I couldn't find a thread here on it. I know it was the Temple Tifereth Israel before they moved to University Circle (then of course, Beachwood). Every time I drive by I think how sad it is. I'd love to tour the inside.

Cleveland: Crime & Safety Discussion
I wonder if the victim's age of 21 has anything to do with it? Victim has now been named in the University Circle police shootings death: http://www.cleveland.com/metro/index.ssf/2018/01/man_fatally_shot_by_cleveland_1.html#incart_river_mobileshort_home Also, http://fox8.com/2018/01/15/bystanders-give-first-aid-to-man-shot-by-cleveland-police-after-attacking-officer/ The 9-1-1 dispatcher seems to be trying to suppress the story from the caller. I don't think the dispatcher would be acting that way if the caller never said it was a Cleveland police officer that shot the man. I have no opinion on the guilt of the officer or the victim, I am strictly focusing on the behavior of the dispatcher.

I used to live on Mt Soledad and used to drive and bike through those roundabouts almost daily too. La Jolla blvd doesn't get the same amount of traffic as the Lakewood intersection. Roundabouts are great if they are designed well taking traffic counts into consideration. Nevermind the flow that they often improve, but they eliminate dangerous T-bone accidents. I say increase the number of roundabouts but realize there is a learning curve associated with them for the designers and the users.

Ohio Restaurant Reviews
sabotage619 replied to rockandroller's post in a topic in Restaurants, Local Events, & EntertainmentJonathan Sawyer's northern Italian restaurant, Trentina, instantly became my favorite place in NEO when it opened. I think he was justly recognized with the James Beard award shortly after, but the last year or so I felt that the tasting menu had fallen a little short. It wasn't blowing me away as it had in the past. The tasting menu or Menu Bianco, as Sawyer calls it, is $150 per person with an additional $50 for drink pairings, so it needs to wow people to stay relevant in Cleveland. In the past month or so I heard that Trentina had hired a new young chef de cuisine, so last night I tried it out again for the first time in at least 8 months. I was blown away! Like the first time I had the menu bianco at Trentina, it was a transcendent experience. Korey Aldrich is the new chef de cuisine and recently married and moved here, his wife's hometown, from San Francisco where he had worked at Saison, one of the best restaurants in the world. Admittedly, it was cold last night and it is the week after the holidays so there is bound to be some hangover but the restaurant was almost empty on a Thursday night. Our experience took 4 hours and I think there were only 4 other tables in that time. I hope Cleveland can appreciate this place, it really is world class.

Cleveland: Crime & Safety Discussion
Hmm, interesting point. Cleveland's violent crime rate is nearly identical to Hartford, Newark and Paterson. As Cleveland gentrifies, I wouldn't be surprised to see Garfield Heights, Warrensville, Brooklyn, and Euclid get worse. What impact on crime do you think the Amazon distribution centers will have on communities like Warrensville and Euclid, if any?

Citizen Pie pizza bistro to open in Ohio City Cleveland.com, Staff September 07, 2017 http://www.cleveland.com/entertainment/index.ssf/2017/09/first_look_citizen_pie_pizza_b.html#incart_m-rpt-2 If you haven't made it to Citizen Pie in Collinwood yet, maybe a new location on W.25th in Ohio City opening Tuesday will be more convenient. I'm a pizza lover and I've tried some of the so-called best pizza in the country from Chicago to New Haven to New York, but I honestly think Citizen Pie is as good as any. Even the legendary DiFara's or Lucali's in Brooklyn. Of course there are different styles, but if you like a Neopolitan, this is hard to beat. Anywhere.
