Cleveland Hopkins International Airport
I used IcelandAir a few years ago from London to Reykjavik then to Seattle. If I remember correctly we went business class for the short flight from LHR to KEF for less than $200. I enjoyed the service very much. The airport was small and easy. I will absolutely consider this option first whenever flying to Europe. Might be worthy of its own thread

Ohio City and Regional Brands Penetrating Other Markets
Penn Station would probably do well there. I'm curious if you know about any other results of the survey and how much impact they might have on decision making.

Bicycle Racing and Bicycle Sports
Floyd Landis! What a character. He was an amazing rider though. He's selling weed in Leadville now and will be participating in the toughest 1-day MTB race in the world at Leadville 100 this weekend. I lived in San Diego where Landis lived and trained in the off-season and he was truly amazing to watch on a bicycle. Not only was he an extremely strong rider, he was an amazing bike handler. He could ride a wheelie or ride on his front tire. To transition from MTB to road racing, his coach Arnie Baker, a local doctor that has been leading a Wed ride for decades told him he needed to ride 25,000 miles in a year. He did. It worked. If you ask another US cycling legend, Chris Horner, about the best stage he's ever seen/ been a part of, he'll tell you about Stage 17 of the 2006 TdF. That's the stage after Landis lost the yellow jersey and over 8 mins and set out solo for 80 miles and made up almost all that time against the whole field. That stage win also led to a urine test that ultimately failed and led to his demise. Horner says clean or doped, he's never seen anything like it. He didn't admit that the whole field was dirty, but most who follow the sport closely know it was.

Cleveland: University Circle (General): Development and News
Plans for the Gund Building, previously owned by Cle Institute of Art, may be moving forward now. I've heard of some early design meetings taking place and Steve Litt brought it up in his article featuring the director over the weekend. What I've heard is that the museum library would be moved over to the Gund Building to open up additional gallery space and it will serve the educational needs of the museum and house a joint program between the museum and CWRU. This joint program is for the Art History department. There was talk of a subsurface tunnel that got rejected. Not sure who the consultants are on this project. here is an article detailing that purchase and early plans. http://blog.cleveland.com/architecture/2013/01/the_cleveland_institute_of_art_1.html

Cycling Advocacy
I use Conti Gatorskins, and although they're slightly heavier (for weight weenies) and a pain to get on most rims, they are very durable. I rarely get flats anymore as long as I pay attention to wear. It's so nice.

Cleveland: Detroit-Shoreway / Gordon Square Arts District: Development News
In related news, this popped up on my LinkedIn account yesterday. https://sjobs.brassring.com/TGnewUI/Search/Home/Home?partnerid=25516&siteid=5221#jobDetails=2905316 McDonald's is looking for a Construction Manager in the Cleveland region. Maybe there is a bigger renovation campaign than just this location.

2018 U.S. Senate Race
That's what I thought, but it seems Mandel is way out in front of Trump on this type of behavior. As far back as 2010 Mandel was calling his African American opponent, Kevin Boyce a Muslim in the race for State Treasurer. Boyce is not a Muslim. http://www.cleveland.com/open/index.ssf/2010/10/mandel_to_stop_airing_controve.html He accused Boyce of insider dealings, the same thing he is accusing Brown of doing.

An article on cleveland.com about this. Josh Mandel sides with 'alt-light' blogger over Anti-Defamation League Updated on July 21, 2017 at 7:16 AM Posted on July 20, 2017 at 3:58 PM Andrew J. 2018 U.S. Senate Race
I'm hearing more and more about the candidates in this race, so I was very surprised there wasn't already a thread started on this topic. Incumbent Sherrod Brown will be seeking a 3rd term as Ohio Senator. Josh Mandel, State Treasurer, has also announced he will again challenge Brown for his seat. Mandel lost to Brown in the 2012 Senate race. Democrat Brown won with 50.7%, Republican Mandel had 44.7% and Independent Scott Rupert had 4.6%, according to wikipedia. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/United_States_Senate_election_in_Ohio,_2012 Michael Gibbins will challenge Mandel in a Republican primary, and it's possible that U.S. Representative Pat Tiberi could join the race with a good chunk of money he's already raised. There have also been rumors that best selling author, J.D. Vance might throw his hat in the GOP ring.

Bicycle Racing and Bicycle Sports
I'm a huge cycling fan, but still my interest in the TdF has declined recently, but this year Lance Armstrong's podcast has renewed my passion for the race. I'm really enjoying his commentary and insider's perspective. If you haven't listened to it, I strongly recommend it.

Cleveland: Festivals, Music Concerts, & Events
Went to Ohio City Stages last night https://www.clevelandart.org/events/music-and-performances/ohio-city-stages-2017 Seems very popular and well attended and organized. It is a public outreach program for the Cleveland Museum of Art and I'm hearing that it will be discontinued after this year. Very unfortunate, it seems like such a great thing for hingetown.

Cleveland: Retail News
To Rockandroller: I'm about to simplify things in possibly an unfair way, but the schools are worse in the inner city because of the shrinking tax base and the flight to the burbs. When all the higher income is living there and property values are higher due to simple economics, of course the schools are better. It isn't a fair fight. How did Cleveland get split up into all of these small municipalities? How is it that these 200 local communities are allowed to exist, all with their self interest at stake? So inefficient to have 200 city halls/PDs/FDs, but of course, the City of Cleveland has done a poor job at these tasks for decades. SMH. I'll keep reading this forum, so I can make more informed decisions that shape our region. All we can do. Is it happy hour yet? :drunk:

Cleveland: Retail News
So what is the solution? What are other regions doing that are controlling growth better than NEO? How does NOACA tell Strongsville or Orange they should look out for the greater good of the region? I recently moved back to the area after being away for 15 years and I'm saddened by the strip malls, that were new when I left in 2000, are now full of dollar stores, discount furniture store, etc and a few miles away are the movie theaters or more popular stores. We all know that in another 5 years the dollar store strip malls will be vacant and the current strip malls will be filled with dollar stores and there will be a bright shiny new development where there is currently a forest. How can it be stopped?

Cleveland Mayoral Race 2017
Brewer's inflammatory Facebook posts. http://www.cleveland.com/metro/index.ssf/2017/07/cleveland_mayoral_candidate_er_1.html#incart_m-rpt-1 In an age of reporting on a politicians social media, pretty sure this qualifies as reporting. Anyway, it reveals, to me at least, more of Brewer's character. If the country couldn't find 2 worthy candidates to run our Federal government, why am I surprised that there don't seem to be any viable candidates for the Mayor of Cleveland?

Cleveland: Restaurant News & Info
I became a big fan of Jeremy's while he was working at Jonathan Sawyer's Trentina. I think Larder will become a destination dining experience. Something that will make Chicago and Manhattan envious. These guys are doing revolutionary things with food.

Cleveland Mayoral Race 2017
Madalone, Brewer and Kilo all filed additional signatures to qualify for mayoral ballot. http://www.cleveland.com/metro/index.ssf/2017/07/challengers_eric_brewer_robert.html#incart_river_index Now the names will be checked against registered voters, according to the article this should be done by Friday. I assume there must be a good reason each of these 3 candidates couldn't comply with the original deadline, but it sure shakes my confidence in them.

Cleveland: Downtown: The Beacon
Not to mention, that someone has to have the developers best interest at heart and not leave it to trusting the GC or the city inspector to make sure the project is built to plan and spec.
