  1. Yeah...Bobby has publicly distanced himself from his dad’s homophobic comments, which is good. But that doesn’t excuse the multi-faceted objectification of his staff.
  2. The GM telling people to “come back from where you came from” isn’t a good look, but sadly not surprising. I was at Rebol yesterday and none of the employees were wearing face masks. Didn’t look like any employee or customer protections We’re taken at all. Sad thing was there was a sheriffs deputy sitting inside at the counter without a mask on as well. I think I’m going to file a complaint with CDPH ??‍♂️
  3. ^and now, after all these “studies” of the fiscal situation and potential route redesign, there hasn’t been a peep. Could’ve been a transformative moment, but instead was wasted. I’m not sure if there are rules against this, but I always hoped they would diversify their portfolio similar to PHS. It would simultaneously bring in alternate revenue, increase ridership and spur other development. ?
  4. I love looking at old maps. Computer and CAD drawn just aren’t the same
  5. I will accept nothing less than a Daily Planet-esque ornament on top.
  6. Two observations: 1. City’s are required by law to have a plan to make their sidewalks ADA compliant. They will be sued if they do not create and execute said plan. 2. ADA curb ramps have very detailed construction requirements, and I can say with 99% certainty that the ones mentioned were not properly constructed. Many contractors do not know, or do not care when installing them.
  7. Not sure the reasoning...but it is an Advance company ?
  8. Was watching the Ken Burns/PBS Vietnam documentary this weekend and was reminded again of the PD’s bygone era. The episode I was watching featured the front page of the Plain Dealer when it broke photos of the My Lai massacre. Depressing for a number of reasons ? Fantastic documentary though.
  9. Covid-19 has imperiled the future of Cleveland and its downtown, and we need visionaries now who can lead discussions on a new tomorrow Cle.com sounding more and more like a tabloid. And they sent this opinion piece as a “breaking news” alert no less. ‪https://www.cleveland.com/opinion/2020/05/the-future-of-cleveland-after-corona-could-rest-on-consolidations-more-out-of-the-box-thinking.html‬

I am the first person to complain about the City’s operations because they are almost always incompetent, but this is a problem of a national scale. It’s just hard to recycle because China isn’t taking our junk anymore and the US isn’t set up to handle mixed recyclables. We need to solve the larger issue.
  11. Seems to be a lot of activity in the area lately
  12. I think @GISguy was just referring to replacing the HPS bulbs with LED, in which case he is correct. But mentioning the streetscape projects...that has always driven me bananas. How is there not a city-wide or at least neighborhood wide design standard? There have to be 700 different types of light poles and 400 different trash cans in this city.
  13. Would we really be surprised is there was now Frank Jackson’s law: all new public spaces are required to have barriers eliminating gaps smaller than a vehicle. Design considerations need not apply.
  14. So, apparently it’s due to federal regulations. It is possible to operate movable bridges remotely, but the Coast Guard must review and approve any plan. Then it is actually entered specifically into the CFR. https://www.cleveland.com/metro/2011/10/cleveland_to_study_whether_its.html <<would love to know what became of this.
  15. True. Honestly you would think it would be fairly easy to operate all of these remotely. I’m curious if there might be some regulatory reason...maybe that will be my bored Coronavirus thing today.
  16. My guess is $$$$. Usually utility poles are right on the edge of the ROW, so that would mean acquiring additional land which means more money and more time. Same with moving the poles underground...they’re probably both CEI and CPP poles and the move would be compensable so the project would have to pay the utilities to move them. Just a guess...
  17. I’m 99% sure it’s the City. They’re definitely the owner anyway. Every movable bridge in the City has an operator’s house (I believe) so I’m not surprised this is any different. Remember the NS bridge? It still has an operator even though the actual movement is controlled at their HQ.
  18. From the article: A city that generates the majority of its revenue from sales or income taxes will be hit hard and immediately when it experiences such consumer declines and job losses. A city that relies on property taxes, however, will not experience such an immediate collapse in its revenues.
  19. My head almost exploded when I read that email. They gut the entire newsroom that actually gets subscription money, and then turn around and ask for subscription money??!! ??
  20. No surprise I’m sure, but Looks like the hit to municipal budgets is going to hurt. And Ohio is especially vulnerable. https://www.brookings.edu/blog/the-avenue/2020/03/31/when-will-your-city-feel-the-fiscal-impact-of-covid-19/?utm_source=newsletter&utm_medium=email&utm_campaign=newsletter_axiosam&stream=top
  21. So sad. The remaining four are still quality journalists too. They all deserve better. I never knew about this...it would be the perfect model. I doubt it would happen, but at the same time Advance doesn’t seem to have any interest in operating a printed paper.
  22. This is bad. Cleveland.com has done maybe one long form type of investigative journalism. The Plain Dealer reporters have done numerous, many focusing on poverty and the vulnerable in cleveland including the lead issue which has prompted true action in this city. Such a shame.
  23. Sounds about right for the block club. ”its too big for the neighborhood, it doesn’t fit in!!1!11!!” **is exactly the same size as the building next door**
  24. Unfortunately it doesn’t appear so.
