Some roundabouts have been using the Hawk pedestrian beacons with their crosswalks. I’m not sure how well it’s worked out though.

Their twitter account is pretty interesting actually, with things they are uncovering from decades ago. But judging by the pictures, a loooooot of work remains.

A lot of times winter work is underground because the frost table is only about three and a half feet deep at its worst. They’ll use mostly blankets or other cold weather techniques. You want to try and keep the concrete curing temperature between 50-100 degrees (this includes the heat generated from it’s own chemical reaction)....but you really just don’t want the concrete to freeze until it’s had time to cure, roughly a week. Calcium Chloride will accelerate the curing process, which normally slows down as the outside temperature lowers. The only problem is that chlorides and reinforcing steel don’t get along, so if there is steel in the pour that option may be eliminated.

Interesting tidbit from the Franklin-Clinton Block Club notes re: Dexter Court “OCI, the City, and Casto have been holding discussions regarding the restoration of the Franklin Circle roundabout.” I’d really love if they found a way to connect W28th back in.

Per the PD I think the answe is yes? But it’s still a little unclear to me personally. “The improvements would add more space for vehicles, put them under cover and include heaters to try to keep passengers warm as they walk to their rides in the winter. I really think the quickest and easiest way to begin is for the City of Cleveland to revamp their 1995 era website. The amount of information/faqs/contact info/electronic forms you should be able to get online is almost endless. But the current website is trash.

With the amount of people using Air BnB, etc...how accurate can these numbers truly be? Do they only use hotel occupancy numbers? I’m curious.

I really really want to support those working there and local journalism...but MAN they make it hard with these ridiculous business decisions.

Is it possible the City just doesn’t want to pursue the purchase WITH Geis, but still buy the building?

The Cleveland school district’s own website has a lot of data to search options. You are allowed to attend any school in the district if you live in Cleveland. https://mycleschool.org The Plain Dealer has a pretty nice searchable database from the just released school report cards. Does your commute matter to you? Because that could sway the east side vs. west side neighborhoods. I would say Ohio City is the most “complete” neighborhood regarding walking to shops, restaurants, etc. on the west side. The Gordon Square and Battery Park areas of Detroit Shoreway would be close behind. Edgewater is a beautiful neighborhood but I would say is more residential. I don’t know if you’ve considered Lakewood, but it would probably tick all of your boxes, and with better schools than Cleveland. The number of random attacks/robberies in downtown and the near west side is worrying. Specifically regarding CMSD, the “chicken and the egg” is the whole reason the Ohio Supreme Court rules school funding unconstitutional what, 20 years ago? Poverty stricken districts with many disadvantaged students have continued since then to poorly perform. But, I suppose Cleveland needs to work with the system we’re stuck with to try and improve in any way they can since Columbus won’t help. But otherwise I completely agree with you, and this is coming from a Cleveland resident.

I went last night and spoke with Dan and the architect. They really don’t want a glut of parking. Often times community leaders and shareholders mandate projects to have a minimum amount of parking spaces. I was told that the garage spaces could eventually become other uses like apartments if we ever get past auto dependency (unlikely). The only concerns I heard from residents was about the plans to reconfigure Ghering and access to Tremont because many residents use it as a shortcut to drive through? Dan also said they’re trying to work with RTA to improve access to the rapid station. They sounded committed to TOD. I’m interested to see how the plans evolve. W 20th is a block away and I think is a much easier way to get to and from Tremont as it is. Maybe will have a add a signal there if traffic picks up, but I don’t think removing Ghering will ultimately affect access much.

I honestly don’t understand how this project would impact parking at all. It’s not eliminating any parking, except for the businesses which will no longer be there anyway. And there will be some parking included for residents and WSM tenants.

This was probably a decision that came down from Gannett. They own several regional news sites and they all have the same UI. I think that the old cleveland.com looked dated, but the new one is just a total mess, at least on desktop. i think cle dot com, along with the similar nj dot com, oregon got com, etc. websites are all still owned and run by si newhouse’s advance media empire, are they not? Correct. Gannett owns the Cincy Enquirer.

A great article in the New Yorker about the failures of implementing Broken Windows policing and what the policies are missing. The study the researchers did focused on the crime rates around rehabilitated properties. It showed a 39% reduction in crime when a building is remediate and 5% when a lot is. It’s a great read.
