Cleveland Hopkins International Airport
I get what you’re saying, but that is the model at every airport in the US. Flight subsidies, or rather minimum revenue guarantees, are the tool that’s typically used. Our problem is, I’m assuming, we’re not offering enough. Aer Lingus for example (from CLE.com): JobsOhio, which was largely responsible for putting together the incentive package, contributed the vast majority of the $11.8 million revenue guarantee (over three years), paying $9.4 million into the fund. Cleveland, meanwhile, pitched in $600,000 and Cuyahoga County contributed $825,000. Destination Cleveland, the Greater Cleveland Partnership and Team NEO contributed the rest.

Yes and no. Construction jobs are short term work and transient. They rely on a steady state of work. If there isn’t enough work to sustain “new” jobs, then yes they will go away. Most likely they just draw resources not-locally. I would listen to this, it covered the topic pretty well. But basically, yes these don’t create many permanent jobs. And places around the country seek them out for different reasons, one of which is hoping to spur spinoff tech jobs. But that’s not going to happen everywhere. https://www.npr.org/transcripts/1242229718?ft=nprml&f=1242229718

House leadership sure seems on board with the Halslam’s request. https://www.cleveland.com/news/2025/04/ohio-lawmakers-reject-dewines-proposed-tax-hikes-revamp-plan-for-browns-stadium-funding.html

I don’t see how this would be any cheaper than renovating the existing justice center. The only positive being not having to operate the building while you’re working on it. I’d expect the costs to be extremely substantial. But obviously worth checking into. If the county doesn’t want this building, who will? There was a recent PD article with real estate experts saying they can’t think of who would want this thing.

Whatcha Reading?
Anyone an Agatha Christie fan? Because I’m looking for rec’s. Read the first Mrs Marple book and want to dive further into her bibliography.

Brook Park: New Cleveland Browns Stadium
I agree. But I did think the lines about how we aren’t actually going to pay for anything and the county should just give in, were weird.

Brook Park: New Cleveland Browns Stadium
I don’t necessarily think it’s for the best that the stadium be in Brook Park, but if we can get away with no local tax dollars going towards this, I would take that as a big win.

Ohio Department of Transportation (ODOT) Projects & News
Trust me, there is plenty of work to be had without building completely new roads. Just look around and you can probably see for yourself where it’s needed. Making this an interstate seems absurd. If you want a better connection between Columbus and Toledo, upgraded this section to an interstate look-alike just like US 30, Ohio 11, US 422 etc etc etc.

Cleveland: General Business & Economic News
I’m sorry, this is an insane statement. There is no world where there is a projected 100% growth. ODOT recently did a population and development study to try and drive future funding planning, and the numbers seemed like such BS. Overall, the current trajectory is showing that the state is and will continue to lose population. But then they just decide “something” will make it better and wouldn’t ya know there’s growth now! Kind of a side note, but with the recent and continuing intel news, I personally am doubtful this project materializes the way they keep saying it will. I think it will be closer to a Foxconn than something transformational.

Brook Park: New Cleveland Browns Stadium
Have they ever said who the proposed owners of the stadium are going to be? Is it going to the Browns, or will the public have to pay future maintenance costs too (like now)?

Maybe if people submit complaints to the police enough they will change their ways.

Cleveland: Downtown: Sherwin-Williams Headquarters
We don’t even know what product they used; it may not have been a SW product for all we know. Usually a company like SW would not be involved in a construction project at that granular of a level. They hire a CM and contractor. There is a consultant inspection firm that, on behalf of the owner, is supposed to be checking these things. Likely the inspector didnt do thier job.

Cleveland City Council
Texts show some Cleveland City Council members intended to retaliate against Jones' accusers Council embarrassing themselves again. Good on Maurer for standing up to them. And kudos for Polensek trying to keep his colleagues professional. https://www.ideastream.org/government-politics/2025-02-03/texts-show-some-cleveland-city-council-members-intended-to-retaliate-against-jones-accusers?utm_source=Ideastream+Public+Media&utm_campaign=b5a4f4c4b6-EMAIL_CAMPAIGN_2024_10_08_06_29_COPY_01&utm_medium=email&utm_term=0_-59356313a2-284925653&mc_cid=b5a4f4c4b6&mc_eid=3e35a9566f

Honestly, how did they arrive at that number?? Seems way out of whack with the project total cost as compared to the other awardees.

Greater Cleveland RTA News & Discussion
I get the impression that the city and county planning commissions would absolutely be on board with TOD. What RTA needs to do is invest in real estate a la PlayhouseSquare. But I don’t think they have the stomach for that. Would love to be proved wrong, but I have never heard one person that works for RTA say anything I would consider visionary.

While there hasn’t been as drastic an improvement as I’d like, I actually do think city services are incrementally, but markedly, improved.
