Greater Cleveland RTA News & Discussion
Here's what I can't seem to get past; Calabrese on Nov 7th sent a letter to Jackson reiterating his strong opposition to keeping the square closed, with data to back it up. Jackson didn't respond until Nov 14th, rejecting RTA's claims. The joint press conference was held on the 15th announcing the permanent closure. So what happened that convinced Calabrese to change positions and now seems to fully support the new plan?

Cleveland: MetroHealth Medical Center
I have no detailed information on this but here is my assumption from reading the timeline: - The Critical Care pavilion has already been built, so emergency medicine shouldn't be affected. - Many non-essential services will be moved to satellite campuses (because logistics will most likely be a nightmare while construction is happening). - The other critical floors of the existing hospital (trauma-inpatient and ICUs) will remain in operation until the new hospital opens its doors.

Cleveland: Ohio City: Development and News
Are there still issues with loiterers and theft/vandalism in the parking lots at Stonebridge? I heard that a couple years back, thought it was here. If they've fixed that, good. I think it's off and on, but in the past couple weeks dozens of cars have been broken into. Stonebridge finally opted to pay for 24-HR parking lot security.

Also an interesting note as it relates to LED street lighting. Just like we've been hearing about recently the "blue light" in our phones and TVs affecting our eyes...the American Medical Association issued a warning as it pertains to LED street lighting because this cooler color of light poses some health effects. http://www.cnn.com/2016/06/21/health/led-streetlights-ama/ I'm personally a fan of the lighting...and I love how it looks on Euclid rather than the yellow High Pressure Sodium lighting we're used to (plus it saves money!).

Cleveland: Public Square Redesign
If Key Bank and Forest City's CEOs really were lobbying hard for the square to be closed, they better pony up and provide the funds for whatever retrofit is needed.

Cleveland: Public Square Redesign
The operating losses cost wise (in not sure about time) were explicitly outlined in the Traffic Study that I'm not sure the City has ever opened up. All three scenarios were detailed there.

Greater Cleveland RTA News & Discussion
To be fair, because the project eliminated at-grade signalized intersections, the total travel time on the West Shoreway will only take an additional 63 seconds.

Cleveland: Public Square Redesign
This upsets me not simply because of the conclusion, but how we got here. - The City wasted $120,000 on a study they are now deciding to ignore. - They then wasted unknown but significant amounts of money on signal poles, cable, pavement, utility relocation, ect - After the square was designed for bus traffic, they never decided to actually test out what that would look like. Even though that would've cost the city ZERO dollars and actually saved RTA money. If they really wanted to 'study' a closed Square, they would've at least tried seeing what bus traffic in the square would've looked like. Now who knows what the plan for a closed square is going to look like, because let's be honest the city probably doesn't have one.

Greater Cleveland RTA News & Discussion
Wow. Announced via @CityofCleveland twitter no less. ".@GCRTA and the city have been working for several months to develop a plan for Public Square that is in the best interests of CLE citizens" ".@GCRTA and the city have determined that Superior Avenue in Public Square will remain closed" "Both organizations will work cooperatively to mitigate—outside of Public Square—any operational impacts of this decision."
-
Greater Cleveland RTA News & Discussion
This is getting a bit ridiculous, after three and a half months all they can come up with is "nothing new"?? I would be extremely surprised if there was an actual 'study' happening, rather than people at City Hall just looking outside their windows. On the same token, it doesn't take a study to tell you how ungodly long it takes to drive around Public Square now.

Cleveland: Flats East Bank
I may be off base here (because I have no restaurant experience) but this doesn't worry me too much. It seems like less a problem for the development as a whole, and more the individual restaurants. With what I'm assuming are fairly high rents and high competition, you really need to make your establishment stand out in order to succeed here. I don't think Willeyville (or FlipSide mentioned above) really did that. I do think conversely that Margaritaville and Raacal Flats will be unique draws to the area, and more entertainment options are needed to sustain that many restaurants.

Cleveland Hopkins International Airport
I know on a map Iceland seems off course but the curvature of the Earth and weather patterns means most aircraft fly near or over Iceland on their way to Europe and back if you live in the United States. So it's not "all the way up there". There is no metric for European flying post hub for Cleveland and there is no interest from any Euro or US carrier to fly to Cleveland-Europe. So, yeah, it was kind of a big deal. Right but if I was not going to use it unless I went to Iceland, why would I care? Because even though it may not benefit you personally it would benefit the entire region.

Cleveland: Detroit-Shoreway / Gordon Square Arts District: Development News
From a Ward 15 residents update back in June... "The new West Side High School, promised years ago when the closing of West Technical High School led to overcrowding at Lincoln West, Rhodes and John Marshall, is, finally, coming to fruition. The site of the new school will be the former Max Hayes campus at 4600 Detroit Avenue. ICON Construction’s Superintendent Javorek says the abatement on the old Max Hayes school will begin in the third week of June of this year and be completed in September or October. Demolition will take place from October of 2016 to January of 2017." https://plainpress.wordpress.com/2016/06/06/ward-15-residents-receive-update-on-school-construction-plans/

Cleveland: Restaurant News & Info
For whatever reason, this morning was the first time I noticed just how far along 'Chicago's Home of Chicken & Waffles' is. The front of the restaurant looks great, especially when you consider how decrepit The Rathskeller looked before. I wonder if there is an updated opening date?

Cleveland: Downtown: Cleveland Athletic Club Redevelopment
I *think* this is apart of the same building, but the section that has been plastered with Cleveland facts since the RNC has some work going on inside. The past two mornings Prescision Environmental has been working inside the door located near the E12th alley.

Maybe this is what you mean, but the picture in the article definitely isn't the current Holiday Inn lobby. Judging by the description, it sounds like the space is accessible off of East 6th? Here is an old photo of the lobby

Cleveland: Ohio City: Development and News
San Antonio mandates this when a historic structure has a renovation/addition. The materials are complementary, but do not try and match the old design. I can't think of the term for it but it works quite well there.

Cleveland: Innerbelt News
Basically it's because you only have so much existing space for lanes (which is 4). When the EB bridge was moved to two lanes, 77N was restriped to two lanes because that was the alternate route. Now the EB lanes will return to carrying 3 lanes through to the trench and the 77N ramp returns to 1 lane.

Cleveland: Retail News
I would prefer a City Target. The reason is there are already two CVS stores downtown. Nothing wrong with Drug Mart, but I don't see them offering anything different. A small target store on the other hand, I think would.
