This comment from Dow: "The community bought into residential; they never bought into commercial," Yes, why would you want businesses in your neighborhood! :/ http://www.cleveland.com/metro/index.ssf/2016/03/cleveland_city_councilman_tj_d.html

    Ah, I understand.

^ I understand your point, and I like Joe Cimperman. But in a town like Cleveland, and with the County's history...I would much rather be overly strict with ethics rules than the other way around.

This ties in with the Upper Chester thread, but why does Cleveland even fund an entire council at this point. There is a unwritten rule that they have to approve the appointed successor. There is an unwritten rule they have to vote the same was as the councilman who's ward is affected by the decision. The councilmen aren't even free to vote for who or what they want. Ugh.
  5. According to the Plain Dealer article, the picture would be static, with the name of the company and maybe a logo. But that's it. I hate to be that guy, but this is prohibited in the city. The cavs say they get no extra money from doing this (obviously Dan will get some free pub). So why let them? Edit: spelling
  6. One thing that is significant about this other than the obvious is that 1997 was also the last year the Cleveland MSA added population. More evidence that jobs equals population growth. Maybe we will see a small uptick when the population estimates come out later this month. I hope you're right. I'm tired of hearing Frank Jackson (and others) saying more people will take jobs away from those already here. :|
  7. I hope they start turning on the exterior lighting at night. The building really is stunning when lit up.
  8. ^ I want to say better care needs to be taken in choosing arbitratiors, but they have to be agreed on by both parties, correct?
  9. I'm not sure if they stopped, but I know on the pat year they were playing RTA commercials on TV and radio. Sidebar: there REALLY needs to be a better job highlighting the Rapid station at the airport. I know it exists and I still have a hard time seeing the sign. I hope the renovations address this....anything would be better.

^They've been doing this in the Warehouse District for 2 years (ish?). I wonder what success, if any, they've had.
  11. I tend to agree with Cimperman here. Most of the vendors come off as "I'm doing a service, you should be thanking me" versus "how can I better serve my customers." I'm sure they have valid concerns, but they don't present them well.
  12. Perhaps more telling, five are Great Lakes ports. This article from CityLab actually shows the rankings of the Distressed Cities. I don't understand the methodology...how does Cleveland rank 2 and Detroit 10? Cleveland has 77% of the populous in "distressed areas" versus Detroit's 99%... http://www.citylab.com/politics/2016/02/mapping-distressed-communities-in-the-us/471150/
  13. Maybe it's symantics, but the original (1796) purpose of Public Square was to mimic New England style town squares and serve as a "public grazing area and meeting place". Obviously over the next 200+ years, as you would expect, the area has evolved over time. In 1850 the city had similar battles over excluding stagecoaches from the square.
  14. Now that the City is building them a $100 million driveway, maybe they'll turn it back on.
  15. I'll never understand why the City is so opposed to turning on the signal prioritization for the Healthline.
  16. I suppose if you've gotten used to fireworks bursting right outside your window this will be nothing.
  17. *Hopefully* for those apartments it won't be so bad during the season, since it won't be rotating pure primary colors.
  18. I think that's gotta be from The Jake. And if it is....WOW ?
  19. Yikes, I can't imagine replying to a member of the public like that. It's more like a text message than an email. I've never understood the leadership in this town. Nearly all of Cleveland's issues can be rooted back to population loss. Not only is mass transit an asset unlike any in Ohio...it can be a massive recruiting tool (i.e. Millenials)! It boggles my mind why they don't leverage it. Edit: grammar
  20. Jon Taffer would have a heart attack if that happened. :)

Does anyone have an opinion on the variance discussion that was mentioned in the article? I know they state the goal was to greatly reduce variances...but I think I agree with the commission that sending requests to Common Pleas is a bad idea. That would take forever to get resolved. But then again maybe that's the idea in the first place.
  22. Kasich was elected in 2010; began serving in 2011. Whoops! Thank you.
  23. Here is a little history (all information is provided by the ODOT Transit Needs Study). The below years correspond with Governor terms. 2000: funding = 44 million 2006: ~16 million 2010: ~22 million 2014: ~27 million There was a 1 year peak in 2011 where $57 million was made available. Calabrese cited only General Revanue Funds for his statistics. The state, since 2007, also flexes some Federal Highway funds to transit. Edit: Taft 1999-2006 Strickland 2007-2010 Kasich 2011-current
  24. The coordination between utility and road work is sometimes extremely disappointing. I understand that emergency repairs can't be planned but that's not always the reason :/
  25. NOM NOM NOM. I'm looking forward to cookie delivery.
