columbus affirms smoke ban
Ugh.... Whatever. My feeling is, the "owners" of bars and other venues should have the choice of whether or not they should be smoke free. We as a free society should not be stripped of our rights. If a bar decides to be smoke free, then it should be my American right to choose on whether or not I want to go to that establishment. I guarantee you that those 5 people who voted yes to ban smoking would never step foot in the type of bar or club I choose to go to.

^I guess not. That's fine though. I'm just going to go to the bars in the suburbs. I will not spend my money in Columbus anymore. In fact, anything I buy from now on will be in the suburbs.

I'm pissed. I smoke at bars and this sucks. FUCK COLUMBUS! Council Passes Citywide Smoking Ban Bill To Go Into Effect In 90 Days POSTED: 8:47 pm EDT June 28, 2004 UPDATED: 8:54 pm EDT June 28, 2004 COLUMBUS, Ohio -- City council voted Monday night to ban smoking in Columbus bars, bowling alleys and restaurants, NewsChannel 4's Monique Ming Laven reported. The original ordinance was amended to allow smoking in outdoor patio areas and the elimination of escalating fines and a 20-foot smoke-free zone outside the establishment. A representative from Mayor Michael Coleman's office said the mayor expects advocates of the bill to lobby surrounding communities to join the city and pass their own smoking bans. If the communities do not, more amendments could be made to the bill, Laven reported. http://www.nbc4columbus.com/news/3470805/detail.html

Did anybody watch the Simpsons last Sunday night? Marge and Homer were supposed to go to Dayton to visit a cousin or an uncle and stay at the "Dayton Arms Hotel". While waiting for their connection flight at an Alaskan airport, Marge and Homer decided to sneek on another connecting flight to Miami. Meanwhile, back in Springfeild, Bart and Lisa were left home with grandpa and they were watching the channel 6 news. A breaking news story broke - A killer tornado was pounding Dayton, Ohio and heading straight for the "Dayton Arms Hotel". They broke to a live scene and a killer tornado was tearing right through downtown Dayton and slammed into the "Dayton Arms Hotel". Anyways, did anybody catch that?

COLUMBUS, Ohio -- A portion of Grant Medical Center will be imploded Sunday. The implosion can be seen live on NewsChannel 4 and nbc4columbus.com. The hospital plans to bring down the 16-story Baldwin Tower, which is one of the most-recognized landmarks in downtown Columbus, to make room for a new operating facility. The implosion is scheduled for 9 a.m. Demolition experts will rig the 60,000-square-foot structure with explosives and implode the building. The result will be a 20-foot-high pile of rubble. Baldwin Hall, which included the gymnasium and two lower levels, was taken down by conventional methods. The most critical part of the implosion will be to keep the falling tower away from Town Street, NewsChannel 4's Larry Roberts reported. Cables have been attached to the building's walls, so when it is imploded, the walls will be pulled in away from the street. The implosion will be similar to the one at Philadelphia's Veterans Stadium, which occurred in March. The company imploding the tower also brought down the Philadelphia ballpark and Cinergy Field in Cincinnati. About 2,500 pounds of explosives were loaded into Veterans Stadium's columns. The interior column rows went first, and their falling weight pulled the outer rows to the inside. The explosions continued clockwise around the stadium for about 62 seconds. Crews have been removing materials from the Grant tower that would make the biggest mess during the implosion. According to the hospital, it would take eight weeks and the closure of Sixth and State streets for the building to be removed by conventional methods. The implosion will take 12 seconds. All streets east of Third Street, north of Main Street, west of Washington Avenue and south of Oak Street will be closed to vehicles and pedestrians from 6 a.m. to noon Sunday for the implosion. The Baldwin Tower implosion will be the first in downtown Columbus, according to the hospital. Implosion and debris removal will cost $780,000. Grant officials said the implosion would make room for 18 new operating rooms. Baldwin Tower was built in 1968. It was named after Dr. James Baldwin, who founded Grant Hospital in 1900- City Nicknames

I was thinking about how some people call Cincinnati – Cincitucky and Columbus – Cowlumbus. So I was wondering what we might call the other cities in Ohio???? I was thinking Dayton – Gayton? (no particular reason) Or maybe Akron – CrAkron? How about Cleveland – Leaveland (since everybody’s moving the fuck out of there) Toledo – Bloledo? What do you guy’s think?- Show a pic of yourself!
I know most of you guys already know each other pretty well but since we have a meet coming up, I thought this would be a good time to put some faces to names. I'll start with me. These are a few of my most recent photos of myself.- Columbus: Franklinton Developments and News
FRANKLINTON FLOODWALL - All dried up? Floodwall offers hope for a Franklinton revival, but few expect a rush to rebuild Sunday, March 14, 2004 THE COLUMBUS DISPATCH By Debbie Gebolys and Mary Mogan Edwards On low ground pocked by boarded-up houses and vacant lots, Franklinton has seldom been associated with the term ‘‘bright future." Many in the timeworn community think the perception will change Monday. Whether it does and how fast it might happen, though, are far from certain. Monday is dedication day for the Franklinton floodwall, a 7.2-mile guardian against the Scioto River that has taken 11 years and $134 million to build. It’s also the last day of a 21-year de facto moratorium on building anything new or fixing anything old in a community known more for crime and tinderbox homes than tightknit neighborhoods and Columbus’ birthplace. Much of Franklinton — sometimes called ‘‘The Bottoms" — will be free of the restrictions that discouraged commercial development and priced home renovations beyond reach. Effective Tuesday, new federal maps outlining the flood plain will show lenders that most owners seeking mortgages or home-equity loans no longer need flood insurance costing up to $600 a year. Glitz at Broad and High Mayor unveils Casto’s plan for celebrated corner: condos, shops, restaurants — and fancy billboards Friday, February 27, 2004 Debbie Gebolys THE COLUMBUS DISPATCH The crossroads of Columbus may have life in it yet. The decrepit northeast corner of Broad and High streets, once considered the most valuable corner in central Ohio, could become a marquee location again if Casto Communities completes a $15 million plan announced last night by Mayor Michael B. Coleman. Casto wants to convert five long-vacant buildings on Capitol Square into 16 stories of stylish condominiums next to streetlevel restaurants and shops and a shorter office building. The project would combine old and new buildings and spruce up facades facing both streets. A lively showpiece may emerge from the plan to replace a billboard atop the four-story corner building with a stack of brightly colored, animated advertising messages reminiscent of New York’s Times Square.
