  2. Woodhill Supply (2-10-22) Infill on E 123rd 1940 E 124th Place Well hidden infill along the Lake View fence finishing up. Via 126 townhomes The building at the Casa d’Angolo site is really the last dead space left on Mayfield (aside from the theater). Even before Primo Vino closed ~5 years ago, it was one of the least appealing buildings in the neighborhood. Haven't been to Low Winery and Bistro yet since it opened last year, but its good to see something in the La Collina building. The buildings two other retail spaces are vacant.   3. Great to see the work start in person. (2-10-22) Has eastbound Euclid been closed here since the start of construction? I'm ok with re-routing cars onto E6th and Vincent, but the Healthline should be able to keep running down this block. Hopefully it won't be for too much longer.
  4. Taken while walking to the 105th-Quincy station. It is great to have a this type of development between the Clinic and the RedLine. This stretch of 105th in Fairfax may have some of the best TOD potential in the city. (2-10-22) The platform extension and additional 105th street entrance from the renovation a couple years back really helped improve the stations visibility. Its easy to forget how close this station is to the Clinic, with much of it's campus being within a 10-15 minute walk. It'll be a great asset for Fairfax.

Kroger Bakery project, others seek state brownfield remediation funds Bonnie Meibers - Columbus Business First - Feb. 11, 2022 "The state's operating budget, adopted in July 2021, includes $500 million to support brownfield remediation, building demolition and site renovation grants to revitalize neighborhoods and improve sites for future development. The program will distribute $1 million to each county in Ohio; the remaining funds will be competitive. ... Columbus City Council recently passed resolutions of support for four projects within the city to get some of those funds, including the closely watched redevelopment of the Kroger Bakery project. Brent Sobczak, president of Casto Communities, told Columbus Business First that getting the brownfield remediation funds would be vital for starting the $125 million project."

Developer plans office-to-apartment project near CSU Stan Bullard - Crain's Cleveland Business - Dec. 20, 2021 \ "Partners in Innovation Landing, which will add about 50 units of housing near Cleveland State University in two buildings at 1835-1849 Prospect Ave. East, started renovations before closing on the properties because it wants to have them ready for the market in July. Thomas Charek, president of Welty Development in Fairlawn, said the project will follow federal guidelines to win U.S. Historic Preservation Tax Credits, but the development team doesn't plan to seek Ohio State Historic Preservation Tax Credits."

Social service provider University Settlement gets $400,000 challenge grant Stan Bullard - Crain's Cleveland Business - Dec. 16, 2021 "Pike said in a phone interview Thursday, Dec. 16, that University Settlement has received a challenge grant from The George Gund Foundation of Cleveland for $400,000 toward the cost of installing the new headquarters and service center for the social service provider on the ground floor of 5115 The Rising. ... Pike said Gund provided the incentive grant as a means to entice additional donors for the $5.9 million cost of his group's portion of the project. ... Pike said University Settlement plans to include in its 20,000-square-foot space a commercial kitchen, a next-generation food pantry that operates like a grocery store, a room for Cuyahoga Community College to offer training in technology and a clinic for visiting medical providers."
  10. While biking down Euclid I could see the red crawler crane from at least East 36th. A large stretch of Euclid should have a good view of the construction as it fills the gap. (12-14-21)

Akron, Cuyahoga Falls hope to advance plan for Merriman Valley development Dan Shingler - Crain's Cleveland Business - Dec. 15, 2021 "Jason Segedy, Akron's director of planning and urban development, said the two cities will unveil recommendations made by their consultant, the Chicago architectural and urban planning firm Farr Associates. The cities and consulting firm have been working together and meeting with the public since July to hone Farr's recommendations for the valley. The firm's latest recommendations will include features to make the valley more walkable, less congested with vehicle traffic and will also protect green spaces along the Cuyahoga River, if they're adopted, Segedy said." Port board OKs final piece of financing for Innovation Square apartments in Fairfax Michelle Jarboe - Crain's Cleveland Business Dec. 16, 2021 "Long-simmering plans to remake a swath of Cleveland's Fairfax neighborhood with mixed-income housing got a boost Thursday, Dec. 16, when the final piece of financing gelled for a four-story apartment building on East 105th Street. The Cleveland-Cuyahoga County Port Authority's board signed off on a proposal to issue bonds for the 82-unit project, the product of a joint venture between Fairfax Renaissance Development Corp. and McCormack Baron Salazar, a St. Louis-based developer. The partners aim to break ground in January, putting the apartments on schedule to open in mid-2023."

Project Designed to House Survivors of Human Trafficking Moving Forward Brent Warren - Columbus Underground - Dec. 15, 2021 "Construction is scheduled to start next spring on a new affordable apartment complex designed for – and to some extent by – survivors of human trafficking. Named Harriet’s Hope after abolitionist and Underground Railroad ‘conductor’ Harriet Tubman, the 52-unit project is being developed by the Columbus Metropolitan Housing Authority (CMHA) and Columbus-based Beacon 360 Management. ... The three-story building will be built on the site of a former Franklinton motel that has already been demolished (the developers are not publicizing the exact address for security reasons)."
  17. Regarding the height, in the staff report about the revised proposal "staff generally supports the proposed height and mass located on the corner of N. High Street and Lane Avenue," but notes that the development should come down in height closer to Norwich to meet the existing structures there. This doesn't necessarily mean that the board members will support the height of the development here, but it seems possible if the existing structures are preserved. I believe Riverwatch and Lawrence towers on Lane are both 11 stories. The Harrison Apartments tower is 12 stories, but it'll be coming down in a couple of years anyways. This new development could then possibly become the tallest apartment building in The UD. At the proposed height, I think it may also be the tallest residential building (including dorms) to be built in The UD in ~30 years. It could be one of only a handful of new developments above 10 stories anywhere outside of downtown. The vast majority of residential development in Columbus (and many fast growing cities around the United States FWIW) top out around 7 stories as 5 over 2 podium buildings. If a developer can finance a structure like this that isn't another "5 over 2" (with over 2.5 floors of underground parking) outside of downtown, that's a good sign for Columbus.

  19. The proposed mixed use development around the Jaycees Arms apartment building / 266 East Main was up for conceptual review at todays Downtown Commission meeting. Commission members had positive comments about the project. Here are some additional graphics of the project from the presentation:

Popular Akron eatery Crave to move to the Bowery development Dan Shingler - Crain's Cleveland Business - Dec. 6, 2021 "The Bowery, Akron's flagship urban development and a linchpin of the city's strategy to rebuild its population and downtown economy, has landed its first major tenant. Meanwhile, what is perhaps downtown Akron's best-known restaurant, Crave, is expanding and moving to new digs. ... "We're shooting for April," said Aaron Hervey, Crave's chef, owner and the person who established the popular restaurant on East Market Street, a block from Main Street, in 2005. "Everybody's bursting to get out of their house in the spring, and I think it's going to be great." ... The new Crave also will be a bit more than a restaurant. It will help fulfill the Bowery's need to have a food market with a small market and grab-and-go food mart in the back, said Hervey and Taylor"
  21. United Way to Sell Downtown Office Building Brent Warren - Columbus Underground - Dec. 6, 2021 "United Way of Central Ohio announced this morning a plan to sell its Downtown office building. The organization issued a Request for Proposals that lays out the criteria it will consider in selling the site, including a stated preference for redevelopment plans that include affordable housing. The one-acre parcel, located at 360 S. Third St., holds a three-story office building and an adjacent parking lot. It has served as the UWCO headquarters since 1978, when the site was donated by the Battelle Memorial Institute Foundation. ... The building will be 'vacated and available for redevelopment no later than December 31, 2022,' according to the RFP."
