Columbus: Franklinton Developments and News
Gravity II (10-13-21) Various views of Gravity II View from Scioto Peninsula Its great to have Town Street back to normal after wrapping up the utility work/resurfacing. There was been a lot of work done on all 4 roadways under the tracks into Franklinton from downtown/Scioto peninsula over the past year or so, making movement around the area more difficult. Can't wait to have all four back open again soon.

Cleveland: Midtown: Development and News
Vacant building in Midtown set to become Delta by Marriott Michelle Jarboe - Crain's Cleveland Business - Oct. 17, 2021 "A New York-based developer plans to revive a mothballed hotel in Cleveland's Midtown, in the first project poised to take advantage of a national historic district established this year. Crimson Rock Capital expects to transform the University Hotel & Suites, at 3614 Euclid Ave., into a 189-room Delta by Marriott. Renovating the forlorn building could be a $35 million endeavor, according to a project document filed with the Ohio Department of Development. The hotel opened as a Holiday Inn in 1965, as an expanding highway system and surging automobile travel spurred lodging construction across the country. A half-century later though, the once-glimmering 10-story building east of Interstate 90 is a blight near a key intersection."

NorthShore64 replied to Summit Street's post in a topic in Central & Southeast Ohio Projects & ConstructionStudy Shows Need for Zoning Code Re-Write, City Says Brent Warren - Columbus Underground - Oct. 18, 2021 "When CU spoke to city officials last year about the zoning code update, they hinted that big changes in how development is regulated in Columbus could be afoot, and the new report seems to add weight to the view that a full re-write – rather than a more limited revision – will be needed. Here are the five key findings of the assessment, as laid out in the report: Standards Are Not Tailored to Local Conditions Code Does Not Prioritize Future Housing and Transit Needs Equitably Code is Not User-Friendly Over-reliance on Site-by-Site Negotiated Zoning Actions Multi-layered and Scattered Decision-Making Process Creates Uncertainty The report also gives concrete examples of the code’s disfunction, like blanket parking requirements that treat a suburban big box store the same as a small business in a walkable, urban neighborhood with good transit access. 'Columbus grew by 15% from 2010 to 2020 — that’s 32 people, every day, for a decade,' said Scott Messer, Director of the city’s Department of Building and Zoning Services. 'This growth can happen to us, or we can intentionally cultivate development and investment in ways that enhance our city’s competitiveness and shared prosperity.'"

Greater Cleveland RTA News & Discussion
That would be great. On Monday NPR had a discussion with various community stakeholders about the Clark Fulton neighborhood. (Clark-Fulton is one Cleveland neighborhood targeted for revitalization and investment) India Birdsong (who was one of the guests) briefly mentioned in the discussion that RTA is "looking at" and will be "precuring a new fare collection system" as the current system "was nearing the end of its useful life" (~34 minutes in). There weren't any other specifics really - but I can't recall if any news on a new/future fare collection system had been reported on/made official yet from RTA.

Cleveland: Glenville: Development and News
Cleveland council panel OKs selling city property for construction of affordable housing in Glenville Robert Higgs - Cleveland.com - Oct. 12, 2021 "A City Council panel gave its approval Tuesday for the city to sell land to a developer who wants to build more than 50 apartments with affordable rents and a center to promote better health in the Glenville neighborhood. The project, known as Churchill Gateway, would be constructed at the site of the idled Harry E. Davis School. The legislation approved by council’s Development, Planning and Sustainability Committee authorizes the city to sell more than 30 parcels around the school building to developer NRP Group. ... The project is expected to be completed in fall of 2022 and cost more than $13 million. Phase one will involve a four-story building with 52 apartments, Scott Skinner, NRP’s vice president for development, told the council’s Development, Planning and Sustainability Committee. Rents for the one-, two- and three-bedroom units will range from about $350 a month to $1,050 a month."

Cleveland History Thread
Cleveland Viaduct now a National Historic Civil Engineering Landmark Taylor Haggerty - Ideastream Public Media - Oct. 11, 2021 "Cleveland’s Main Avenue Viaduct is now a National Historic Civil Engineering Landmark. ... The landmark designation does not include any restrictions or qualifications on how to maintain the property moving forward, but it is a significant honor for the structure, Gasparini said, as only 230 other projects have earned the title in the country. That includes iconic structures such as the Brooklyn Bridge. ... Cleveland Hopkins International Airport, the only other structure to have received this designation in the Cleveland area, was designated in 1979."

Greater Cleveland RTA News & Discussion
RTA to Deploy Civilian Ambassadors Instead of Armed Cops to Enforce Fare Payment, Finally Sam Allard - Scene - Oct. 12, 2021 "In 2017, Cleveland Municipal Court Judge Emanuella Groves ruled that the Greater Cleveland Regional Transit Authority's (RTA's) proof of payment fare enforcement method was unconstitutional. Fares were at that time enforced on the Health Line and Red Line rapid transit trains by armed RTA cops. ... according to a presentation by RTA's new police chief Dierdre Jones at Tuesday's board committee meeting, a six-month pilot program will employ unarmed ambassadors to inspect fares and assist passengers with navigating the transit system in 2022. Ambassadors will be full-time employees working first and second shifts, seven days a week, and will be a regular presence on buses, trains and at transit stops." Northeast Ohio / Cleveland: General Transit Thread
These Cleveland Church Vans Will Drive You to Work Henry Pan - Next City - Oct. 8, 2021 "It’s hard to get around without a car in Northeastern Ohio. Decades of neglect by the federal and state governments, which continues to reduce its funding commitment, have resulted in endless cuts to transit service, which result in years of ridership decline. ... Enter the Cleveland Clergy Coalition and Pastor Aaron Phillips. Phillips’ Sure House Baptist Church had four vans that were only used on Sundays. Realizing that people can’t get to a well-paying job if they don’t have a way to get there, as well as being unable to afford a way to get around without a job, the coalition decided to put their vans to use, to connect Clevelanders with better-paying jobs in the suburbs. ... The church vans have connected 100 workers, who are mostly Black and live in Cleveland’s mid-to-south side, to well-paying manufacturing jobs in the suburbs."
