Cleveland: Detroit-Shoreway / Gordon Square Arts District: Development News
As an owner of a Cleveland Bricks renovated home I have very mixed feelings. It's great that more houses are filling in the empty lots, but man does Bricks do D- level work. Hopefully their new builds have better contractors than whomever did the renovation stuff.

Wow, love it! Build about 50 more of them all over Cleveland.

I'm still confused, is the Horton Harper design on Fulton south of Lorain struck down? I own/live two houses from there and gave my approval to BoZA, my block club also echoed my comments. AFAIK it was approved unless a different forum struck it down later. My block club doesn't seem quite as NIMBY as other areas of OC. I've always put up my support and things seem to get approved more easily here.

Ohio Energy Bailout Referendum
Why is Rep. Weinstein excited to go visit that coal plant?

Can you help explain this? Is there sarcasm here that I'm missing?

More Police vs. Less Poverty
Yep, agreed. Can the next mayor overrule or reallocate whatever the current mayor does with the ARPA funding?

Whelp, I've only been half listening, but like I thought Cleveland mayor is bungling this. The top priority is to buy more police equipment.

https://www.facebook.com/CityofCleveland/posts/10158032321331962 When do these federal dollars get allocated? Can the next mayor introduce new legislation to direct the funds elsewhere? I don't have any faith that the current administration will use the money effectively.

Cleveland: Downtown: Tower City / Riverview Development
I imagine they're going after the federal dollars that are coming. Using some of that $500M to work the transit/infrastructure side would make the whole development more feasible.

Cleveland Mayoral Race 2021
That's good to hear. The fact that Justin came out early and talked about the federal funds coming was a big reason for why I voted for him. So much better than the money wasted by the Jackson administration sending out mailers to the city asking for "suggestions" on how to spend the money... I also like that he's making the WSM a priority and wants to modernize the city website/permitting process.

At what point do you start wondering if it was you who was duped and not the large majority...

Cleveland: Ohio City: Development and News
New renderings from Harbor 44 Phase 2 are up on co-urbanize: https://courbanize.com/projects/harbor44-phase2/information 😍 There's only been one negative person from the email chain in my block group compared to ~3-5 positive comments. I swear some people will complain about anything. These look about as good as anyone could hope from an urban design standpoint

Cleveland Mayoral Race 2021
I need to stop coming to this thread... it's bad for my blood pressure lol. Bibb is the clear best choice imo. Cleveland has built some good momentum in the last couple years; I believe this is in spite of Jackson, not because of him. That momentum is going to continue regardless of whether we have a good or bad mayor. I do think that a GOOD mayor can multiply our progress, and Bibb is the only candidate who can do that imo; the rest are just more of the status quo.

Cleveland: Population Trends
The census tract immediately West is going to be great too! A loss of 321 from 1993 to 1672, but off the top of the head here's the units that have finished or are in work since the census was taken: 1. Tinnerman Lofts: 51 units 2. Bailey Bridge Townhomes: 56 units 3. The Fourty One: 32 units (though I can't determine if this was leased out by the census) 4. Harbor 44 Phase 2: 23 units 5. Numerous infill houses, I know of at least 8 units by Cleveland Bricks, 2 by Knez, and 1 by Horten Harper. There are surely a dozen or so more that I haven't listed. 6. Proposed 12 unit by Horton Harper That's around 194 new units since the census, and all in a small section of the tract (north of 90 in Ohio City)! I'm beginning to see the cheap houses in Clark Fulton in this tract get swooped up now too, so I expect major investment to jump 90 in 5 years or less. The Clark/Fulton intersection has tons of businesses and is ripe for some TOD as well. Not to mention I've reached out to Kerry McCormack about a rapid stop at Fulton and he's acknowledged that it's at least been discussed.

Why aren't any of those hearings in the dense cities?

Cleveland: Restaurant News & Info
Lack of staffing I can see, but restaurants have been back to full capacity for a while now. In some cases, there is more seating because of the outdoor spaces that were added. I'm really looking forward to the census results next week. I feel like population growth for the region is a legitimate possibility.

fwiw, remember that Kucinich hasn't raised much money at all, so the percentages can cause you to draw some false conclusions. I thought at first that it meant he had a ton of support in the city, but in actuality that whole amount came from just 13 people. Bibb had by far the most Cleveland donors with 461 – more than the other five candidates combined – which accounted for 31% of his total money raised. His average donation from Cleveland was also the lowest total at around $163 per donation.

Generically, have people noticed that it's much harder to walk in and/or get a reservation at bars and restaurants lately? I remember pre-2020 just about any place you could walk in and get a table at any time. Lately you need reservations days in advance to get a table at all and sometimes a week in advance for popular times. I wonder if it's people going out more (after not eating out a lot during 2020), more population growth, or something else driving the change.

The Future of America and Its Cities
I'm fine enough with the 5 factors. What I'm not fine with is equally weighting future risk with current risk. They're trying to show who will have the most dramatic change in their risk score, not the actual risk. The end result is that areas that are currently very risky (coastal, fire, and tornado prone areas) get scores that are low since the change in how risky they are isn't very large. You can't really use the scores to compare different areas against each other, but I'm sure people will use it like that.

What were the originals? I think the existing is attractive enough. The grey and black isn't for everyone but not everything has to be classic red brick imo.

Cleveland: Random Visualizations & Massings
Detroit also has 36 buildings above 300', Cleveland only has 23. Here's building heights above 300' plotted out two different ways:

Cleveland: Random Visualizations & Massings
I'm very curious what Detroit looks like in comparison... I've heard from multiple different people that Detroit has bigger buildings than Cleveland even though I point out that Cleveland has 3 of the top 4 in terms of height. I think it's moreso that our height drops off very fast but Detroit has more density in the 400-500 ft range. I'll take a bunch of "shorter" buildings that fill in the empty lots over a couple tall buildings any day. Girth not length people!
