Cleveland Hopkins International Airport
Sometimes when I arrive a little early for a flight, I like to take a little walk around the airport. If I have a long layover somewhere, it's also something I like to do at other airports, too. CLE is a little easier to do this at than some since it isn't often very crowded unless it's a morning flight. I miss being able to include Concourse D in the walk; when it was open, that walk was over a mile and was good exercise at a brisk pace, especially when you take the stairs instead of the escalator getting to and from the tunnel. I miss Concourse D... I liked eating at Gordon Biersch or Obrycki's over there.

Euclid: Development and News
The lot of land on the upper right of this photo is being turned into a beehive farm/berry farm called Urban Renaissance Farms LLC, by a great family. Check out their Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/Urban-Renaissance-Farms-LLC-753681198071058/?fref=ts Modify message Read more: http://www.urbanohio.com/forum2/index.php/topic,29925.0.html#ixzz45Y77S9KG Yes they are great people! I hope this venture turns a profit and inspires more similar ventures. This a great use of land that might otherwise fester.

Possibly, but I would put my money on something "different." I heard that they are thinking of putting in a Pappadeaux's in there, which is a chain, but definitely not something around here (closest one is in Cincinnati).

Cleveland: General Business & Economic News
I'm sure they were anyway... this is a good move for them, though, as it shows they are trying to be proactive. Cleveland may or may not have a chance at landing something like this, but this public "pitch" may show other businesses that this area is willing to work with them one way or another to get their business to move or expand here.

Agreed... not to mention interesting as well. Once you start hearing news/plans from contractors, then real things are getting planned. I know an HVAC contractor has already been contacted about this project and Weston Citymark. The HVAC guy seems to think that Citymark will start first, though he believes both projects are a definite.

I was never a fan of that mirror-ish ceiling... that's Concourse B, right? At least it's not as nasty looking as the drop ceilings at United's O'Hare gates. I wonder how often UA employees look up there at the water damage and dark spots and think to themselves, "That's what I'm breathing in all day?"

Cleveland should call up PayPal as soon as possible and pitch them: http://money.cnn.com/2016/04/05/technology/paypal-north-carolina-lgbt/index.html

Cleveland: Downtown: Playhouse Square Development and News
Oh wow... that is gorgeous. I love that we have these beautiful theaters here. Can you believe that it was mainly a movie house for two decades? This whole complex is a gem and I am glad it is getting this kind of attention to detail in its continued maintenance and restoration.

I fly once a month pretty much, and it is still pretty bad. It doesn't look like they've made much progress, mostly because they were doing it in segments and once one segment was done they moved on to the other without completely revealing the enhancements already done. I do believe they will get it finished in mid-June... just in time for the convention.

When AA does make their move, it will be nice to see AA's gate information monitors visible as United's passengers head to the banjo gates where there are STILL no LCD displays. UA has the most mainline flights out of CLE, and yet they still haven't brought their gates up to the standards of this decade. If United Airlines can put those displays up in their gates out of Northwest Arkansas Regional, surely they can do it in Cleveland, where they still claim to want to be a major player.

If we go by the doom and gloom commentary on cleveland.com, United dropping St. Louis and Las Vegas as routes means that the regional economy is completely dead. Because, as we all know, when people can't get to St. Louis or Las Vegas non-stop on a United plane, the local economy is in the toilet. One real downside; there will be no non-stop flight between CLE and STL for about a month, since United shuts down their service in May and Southwest doesn't start their service until June. If the city ever found itself flush with cash (haha!), I wonder what they would do if they could do whatever they wanted with the airport, assuming they still had to fit within their current footprint. How many gates would they have? Would they put in additional parking?

Cleveland Orchestra News & Info
That is impressive! And I know Miami loves having them down there as well. Their arts district/area is very new and is an architectural stand-out (although the acoustics are terrible compared to Severance) and they do a great job advertising for the orchestra. Considering the size of Cleveland as a city compared to many others (think Miami, or Houston, or many others), it makes me so happy and full of pride to hear the prestige the orchestra brings the city, to say nothing of how nice it is to be able to go listen to them so frequently! Clevelander's should abandon the Browns and the soap opera surrounding them and embrace the orchestra instead. (all right, it isn't the same demographic... nice wishful thinking though!)

Lake County: Restaurant News & Info
I just ate at one of these down in Texas... nothing amazing, but it will generate some business for sure. It's right up Mentor's alley. It would have been nice if it could use an existing area, but I guess the mall has the most visible property, particularly off of Mentor Ave., and perhaps they will siphon some of Olive Garden's business, so the wait time may sometimes be less than 90 minutes.

Cleveland: TV / Film Industry News
That would be nice, but I think they would need an interested party to take a large portion of their property in Mayfield off their hands, and considering the size and spread of their campus, it would be quite an undertaking. Furthermore, I would imagine Mayfield would gladhand them and make every effort for them to retain their full presence there. Although it really depends on the leadership at the company. It would be a significant financial investment to make this move, but if it has a positive impact on their bottom line in any way, perhaps it would be considered.

The hub is NOT coming back, nor is any other hub going to come to Cleveland, but hopefully we can pick up a few destinations. I don't know how scheduling and crew basing work, but I would believe that could be part of the issue for non-hub airports picking up additional destinations. I will say this, one of my acquaintances who is a pilot has said that O'Hare had to pick up all of the regional passenger load from Cleveland and it hasn't been pretty (his words). I hope you are right about JetBlue... they have a great product and I would love to see them enter the CLE-->JFK market. Since United vacated JFK, whatever they would fly there would be an upgrade over the CRJ or ERJ service that is there currently. I think they could do well with a once daily (or greater in the future) E190. JetBlue is such a different product - I think the reason Smisek was reviled is because he nearly completely de-emphasized the customer and focused nearly entirely on the shareholder, which may help your stock in the short term, but is never a basis for long-term strategy in a service based industry like the airlines. Having been surpassed by Delta earlier this week in size only confirms this shortsightedness by Smisek and United Continental as a whole. I agree with you as well that it appears that those that manage Hopkins are unaware of how to maximize the potential of the airport and work with the carriers to provide more destinations and a better product. I do hope that changes in the near future.

The hub was shut down because of a lack of pilots for the regional carriers doing business as United Express. Since CLE's operation was mainly regional, it was a logical target. This couldn't be said publicly, because I believe they would have been fined under the terms of the agreement signed during the merger. Thus, the claim of lack of profitability. As a lawyer, I'm sure Smisek was well aware of the ways to accomplish what he needed. The truth of the matter is that the hub was simply not needed and it was eliminated. However, it was done in such a way that reminded me a bit of the "The Decision" and Clevelanders took it personally.
