  1. You have a great gift for expression... hard to express in photographs, but that was outstanding. I love Cleveland, and I love this photographic presentation!
  2. I was truly disappointed when Kasich pulled Ohio's funding for the 3C rail. At the time, I had a lot of short term assignments at Wright-Patterson AFB, so I was looking forward to this as an alternative to driving. I would even have paid more for the ability to sleep on these journeys. Of course, this is moot now, as I no longer go down there. But it would have been nice.
  3. Agreed... but I take the red line for my monthly trip, so it was definitely something I was curious about. :-)
  4. As the old saying goes, "You don't know what you've got till it's gone." I'm curious what an estimate on the red line life expectancy is. If we lose the rail link to the airport, that will be a major blow. I know some of the companies downtown offer incentives/credit for taking public transportation. As with many things, if the business community can continue to support, perhaps some of the most draconian measures can be staved off.
  5. I flew Delta a few weeks ago, and I can confirm that all 5 of these gates were being used at the time. Or, at the very least all the gates had flights listed on their "screens." Early morning is a busy time; I was flying to Detroit, and while I was there, flights to Atlanta and JFK were boarding, and I knew a flight to LGA was getting ready - I heard the gate agent announcing I was boarding the DTW flight.
  6. http://www.cleveland.com/metro/index.ssf/2015/10/cleveland_hopkins_airport_cont.html#incart_m-rpt-1 So, is this increase indicative of a continuing trend? Or just temporary? I haven't noticed much of an increase or decrease during my monthly trip; however, I do fly out on Fridays, so my non-scientific sampling/observations are limited to that day. I will say this, the Arrivals pickup area is almost always pretty crowded late Sunday/early Monday morning.
  7. Hmmm, I think I was at the same concert (heard the phones).. This past weekend the Straus (Also Sprach) and Verdi were amazing... The Messiaen I could do without. Also, its great that the student initiatives are filling seats, and most of them dress appropriately, but I some some wearing hoodies which really made me cringe. Yes... but there are also some adults that could use guidance. A couple of people away from me was a middle aged man wearing jeans and a t-shirt. To his credit, the t-shirt was monochromatic and tucked in. All the same, I wished I had worn a suit. I'm not letting my wife talk me out of it again!
  8. I'm glad they got their contract issues hammered out. I heard Mahler 3 a couple weekends ago; they'll be performing that in several locations. Simply superb. Hopefully at their European concerts they won't have people there who don't know how to silence their cell phones. I think the inexperienced should find a young person before the concert begins to help them ensure their phone is silent. At the performance I heard, there were quiet sections of the 36 minute first movement that were interrupted TWICE by cell phones. That annoying iPhone marimba sound!

I am not surprised Delta doesn't do anything to MSP considering Toledo's proximity to DTW. I am surprised United doesn't do a flight to ORD. Did Continental ever do a flight to CLE when it was hubbed there? If any of Toledo's big business has a route they need to happen and it can pick up enough ancillary passengers to fill at least a 64 seat CRJ, maybe another route could pop up. I could see a flight to CLT or PHL if business traffic warranted it in the future.
  10. With the cost of these, they better hold up in snow! But I must agree with Cleburger... they look terrible. Since I'm so cheap, I hope to never use these; most of my travel is short term so I can park at the Brookpark rapid station and take the rapid one exit. Much less expensive parking solution. Most of my travel is to DFW... big airport, but I prefer the less expensive convenience and rail access of my home airport.
  11. Having gone to CWRU in the late 90's, I am pleased to see what is being done in University Circle. At the time, there were many good things going on, but it is much more student-friendly, and they are finally doing a better job of integrating all the institutions... museums, university, healthcare, and commerce. I must admit some jealousy... I wish some of these things had been around when I was an undergraduate! The Case experience would have been far more interesting.
  12. While it may not be the most architecturally interesting, it definitely will do well to serve its intended purpose. That said, they could have given it a "stylish industrial" appearance to further its role as a vocational training institution. And I agree... the Cleveland School of the Arts is simply gorgeous.
  13. I had some friends from Boston that came to Cleveland this past weekend for a little vacation. They loved it! They did the Science Center, Rock Hall, the art museum, they went to the Christmas Story house, took in the Indians-Red Sox game with us, and plenty of other things! They really enjoyed Cleveland... the airport was the only thing they didn't really care for all that much. It was interesting to get an outsider's opinion of things. He chalked most of his displeasure to the construction (he didn't even complain about the rental car facility - but he is used to DFW's remote facility which is comparable in distance to Cleveland's), but he wondered aloud what the airport will be like during the RNC.
  14. Someone I work with suggested that those surface lots adjacent to public square be repurposed as an extension to the greenspace. Of course it would be great if it was that Ameritrust building it was originally going to be, but I was intrigued by his thoughts. What do you think?
  15. No, you are correct. Poor choice of words on my part!
  16. Until the business community presents a compelling reason to have a more convenient direct overseas flight, I don't see that happening here anytime soon. However, things do change. With the Cleveland Clinic and its robust expansion and high reputation, is it possible to ever see a flight from the Middle East?
  17. In other words, the bean-counters have surely looked at this and thus far decided against it.
  18. Though a more modern, efficient space would certainly be beneficial, they have put substantial investment thus far in the Landmark structure. Combine that with the fact that they own the property, makes a move to new space less likely, in my opinion. Currently, the space is sufficient to house the operational and IT staff, and R & D is covered at the Breen facility in the Flats... any additional space will likely be gained as other tenants move out. All they have to do, really, is raise the rent... in S-W's case, when a tenant moves out, it isn't really a loss since they immediately will fill the space with their own personnel.
  19. Sweet news! Natalie's Candy Jar is coming back to Hopkins. I went there frequently when it was in Concourse D. I got the "Pez"idents presidential Pez machines there (my wife is a collector). Those items will sell more than Swatches anyway. http://www.cleveland.com/business/index.ssf/2015/09/natalies_candy_jar_welcomes_travelers_with_a_sweet_tooth_at_cleveland_hopkins_airport.html#incart_river
  20. Usually when a tenant moves out of an office/area in Landmark, Sherwin simply retakes the space. I would be extremely surprised if they move from Landmark, though I know they floated the idea a few decades ago, without it gaining too much traction.
  21. I agree with this. I stopped watching the Indians when I could not watch them on regular cable. The same thing with the Cavaliers. There can't be many teams left anywhere that have games on "free" television these days. Do you think that trend could coincide with the NFL becoming even more dominant over MLB? I think that is quite likely, though baseball TV viewing has been up across the nation, as well as here. I'm not certain the same is true for raw attendance. Although for all the complaints about attendance, it's not so unusual for Cleveland. Apart from the 90's, Cleveland was never a huge baseball town as far as attendance numbers were concerned. That doesn't make me any less of a fan, though.
  22. Next week I have a Detroit connection with Delta - although I don't know if I'll be ready for that freaky tunnel so early in the morning!
  23. I agree with this. I stopped watching the Indians when I could not watch them on regular cable. The same thing with the Cavaliers. There can't be many teams left anywhere that have games on "free" television these days. All these teams have signed multimillion or billion dollar deals with the sports networks... especially Fox affiliated ones. I can't fault the Indians for doing so as well, though I think they sold low. Viewership has been steadily rising for the last few years.
  24. Glad to see motion on the Mabel's project - from outward appearances it seems to have been taking an unusually long time.
  25. Direct flight to a good European hub, preferably not one of the biggies (LHR, AMS, CDG, FRA) like Dusseldorf or Munich. Or maybe one with U.S. customs preclearance like Dublin or Shannon (I think those are the only two European airports with USA preclearance). I'm sick of having to fly through the unreliable, overcrowded East Coast hubs. And I would think Europeans would prefer to have more options to bypass the East Coast too and land in the Northeast-Midwest heartland (without messing around with Chicago). Chicago is such a nightmare. I would imagine most of Cleveland's hub traffic went there, which may help explain why I have YET to connect in O'hare without at least one major issue coming up. I route through Houston whenever possible... my luck there has been considerably better.
