Gas Prices
From everything I have heard, 10 hour days (and sometimes weekends) are the norm at Hyland Software anyways. True, though alot of the workers are hourly, so if they don't work the 5th day, they give up some overtime.

Gas Prices
I know Hyland Software just implemented flex time for the summer. Employees have the option of working 4 10hr days and taking the 5th off. At Key, where I work, my division has implemented a work from home one day a week policy. Neither are mandatory.

Peak Oil
Interesting article arguing why oil prices will eventually crash. http://money.cnn.com/2008/06/06/news/economy/tully_oil_bust.fortune/index.htm?cnn=yes Why oil prices will tank Arguments that $4-a-gallon gas (or even higher) is here to stay are dead wrong. Housing's boom-and-bust cycle tells you why. By Shawn Tully, editor at large NEW YORK (Fortune) -- High-flying tech stocks crashed. The roaring housing market crumbled. And oil, rest assured, will follow the same path down.

Dip
From time to time, I do focus groups at Focus Groups of Cleveland (quick way to make $100, and they're usually pretty interesting). I'll sign up for anything, even if I'm not their target market and I have to lie. I don't smoke, but I do cigarette ones all the time. One time about 3 years ago, my brother-in-law, Kevin, and I signed up for one on dipping. It was a two parter that payed $250...jackpot! Now, I grew up on a farm in Medina, but I've never dipped before because its so nasty. So the first night was just answering a bunch of multiple choice questions...took about 30 min and paid $75. Part two included taking two samples of flavorer Skoal home, trying it out and taking notes on it and then coming back a week later to discuss it with the marketers. No problem we said...we'll just fake it. The flavors apple (nasty), orange and lemon (nastier) and coffee (nastiest). I actually tried it at home, just so it wasn't a total fake. It was as nasty as I imagined it would be...definite nicotine buzz, though. Kevin refused to try it. Now I've been to many focus groups, and I've never gotten to sample anything. Did a tequila one...no tequila. I've done many beer ones...always advertising. I've done many cigarette ones...never had to smoke (which would be fine). So we go in to discuss our "notes" and the first thing they do is slide everyone a can of the coffee skoal and ask everyone to throw in a dip and write down our impressions after 1 min, 5 min and 10 min. So there we are, in a room full of dippers, with tobacco execs watching from behind a two way mirror and Kevin and I have to throw in the grossest dip of all time and keep it in for 10 min. We had to look like the biggest idiots trying to put the first and second dips in our lives in.Kevin said he almost puked as soon as he put it in. I never got sick, but it was gross. Hardest $250 I've ever made.

FYI extra ticketing by police this long weekend
^The EXACT same thing happened to me driving to OU back in like 2000. I was going 5 over, the speedlimit changed and I didn't notice and I got nabbed going 10 over. That was a bad year...the only 3 speeding tickets of my life, all in about 9 months.

Ohio Smoking Ban
The restaurant did, you are saying? Not the bar (assuming they are separate entities)? There've always been plenty of smoke free restaurants regardless of the law, and pretty much all restaurants had no-smoking sections. That was the marketplace in play. That's also a pretty high end place and a tourist/business destination. It was the whole place...restaurant and bar.

Budget & Saving
I would recommend opening up an Orange Savings Account with ING. ING is an internet bank (FDIC insured) that pays a really high rate of interest on thier savings account. I think its paying a little over 4% right now...it fluctuated as the fed raises or lowers the rate. They have an easy interface online to set automatic transfers from your normal checking account...in my case, Key. The thing I really like about having the account with ING, is that its seperate from my Key accounts, so I really never think about it except when they send me a monthly email. So I've been able to build up a nice rainy day fund that is truely out of sight, out of mind. It pays good interest and is liquid. Can't beat that.

Cuyahoga County: Corruption Probe
Did anyone else notice in that Santiago article today that Rosemary Vinci was Santiago's campaign manager and that he asked her to mentor the owners of The Copa? That lady is involved with all the seemingly corupt politicians. I think the PD is now going out of their way to write exposes on their whole clique.

Cleveland: Downtown: East 4th Street Developments
Looks like Jonathon Sawyer's new place is going to be on E. 4th. From today's Free Times: With luck, Jonathon Sawyer may break ground on his new restaurant, The Greenhouse Tavern, as early as next month. Located on East Fourth Street, the restaurant will build upon the chef's work at Bar Cento, where he features recipes built around sustainable, local, indigenous ingredients. A rooftop greenhouse and garden will provide the restaurant with supplemental produce. "This project is much more personal than Bar Cento," explained Sawyer. "I've been working on it for almost two years." The long, narrow space in the Cort's building will seat approximately 120 guests on a main floor, open mezzanine and lower-level open kitchen. Additional rooftop seating will bump capacity up to 200 in warm weather. Featuring a wealth of reclaimed materials, from barn siding to porcelain sinks, the proposed design is described as "farmhouse-edgy." Diners can expect true gastropub fare like house-cured pickles, poutine, crispy fried variety meats, cod in parchment and Ohio-beef burgers. With luck, the Greenhouse will be up and running sometime this fall. For more information visit thegreenhousetavern.com.

Cleveland: Restaurant News & Info
^Well, logistically, babies need a high chair (not a booster seat) or a sling for the carrier, so bar seating is out for the time being.
-
Cleveland: Restaurant News & Info
^Also, Beer engine only has like 4 booths, and 3 or 4 low tables, which are essential for babies. Everything else is bar seating or high tops, which won't work.

Just personal preference, though we have taken the baby to Southside during the day for brunch. I guess it just depends on how the vibe feels. Southside during the day = restaurant Southside at night = bar Beer Engine, I guess would be the same way, but Dewey's at night is still a restaurant. So it is different.

Cleveland: Restaurant News & Info
Yeah, I love the beer engine, but I consider it more of a bar, and I feel weird taking a 7 month old to a bar.

Really? I've only eaten there a couple of times, but I thought it was pretty good. I guess I am more happy about a family friendly place with a good draft list that is right down the street from me.
