  1. But thats not what the petition is for and it should be I don't understand why they are going after the tax and not after the commisioner's right to increase it. There was already a law that passed that allowed the commisioners to raise taxes. They should be petitioning again that law, not against a tax that the law allowed them to raise.
  2. I'm not questioning the numbers, but why does a one month delay add $400k to the budget? Do the building materials rise in price that much?
  3. that had to be longer than 2 years ago...the HOB has been open for almost 3 years, and P&F has been open at least 4 or 5. Cool pics, though.
  4. It looks like Jonathan Sawyer won't be opening that gastropub right away...but this sounds good too: Acclaimed local chef Jonathon Sawyer has pushed off plans for his Gastropub for the time being. Instead, he has partnered with Sam McNulty of McNulty's Bier Markt in Bar Cento, a Roman-style Enoteca (wine house), to open in early October next to the Bier Markt in Cleveland's Ohio City neighborhood. Bar Cento will feature "cento vini" (100 wines) and brick-oven-style modern and traditional pizzas staring at $8. . . .
  5. I think that was me (though I use a different screen name on scout)

I live in the SW corner of Lakewood, on the Westpark border. From my house to Brookpark Road, it is about 5 miles straight down Rocky River Dr. I would say that anywhere north of Kamm's Corners (intersection of Rocky River Dr and Lorain) in WestPark (staying on the streets that come off of Rocky River Dr) would be perfect for what you are looking for. Its a nice neighborhood. Rent shouldn't be more than$600-$800 (and maybe cheaper). You'd be less than a mile from Kamm's, where you can do your errands (grocery shopping, banks, drugstore, restaurants, pubs...especially Irish pubs, etc). There is also an entrance to the Rocky River Reservation less than a mile away off of Old Hogsback Rd. You can get to I-90 very quickly at McKinley Ave. Feel free to ask or send me a private message if you want more information about this area, or Lakewood/Rocky River/Fairview Park/Westpark in general.
  7. I agree. Getting signatures is a pain in the ass. It takes a lot of time and a lot of organization. Looking at their PutItOnTheBallot website, it doesn't seem like they have alot of the later. One of the posts on the website is about alot of people wanting to print out petitions to circulate, which you can't do. I'm guessing there are alot of people who want to help but have no idea how to petition. Which means there will 1) be alot of people who quit when they realize they can't just print it out and have their friends sign it and 2) be alot of invalid petitions.
  8. When I had the task of circulating petitions for a mayoral candidate, I was told to be careful that all the signatures were registered voters in the city of Cleveland because if just one name was not valid, then the whole sheet (25 signatures) would be void. I'm not sure if that was true or not, but thats what I was told. So if someone asks you to sign the petition, I say just sign it with a made up name. Maybe we can band together and screw up their numbers.
  9. Hey, I take free vacations too!
  10. I think its the heat...that always makes people crazy.
  11. it might be a little more difficult to pull that off since people live on E 4th. I would be pissed if I got carded trying to get to my apt.
  12. I think technically the Diamond's Men's club is on the east bank.
  13. Well, the businesses that got shut down were regular bars that had underage drinking and people falling into the river. It didn't really have anything to do with strip clubs. Basically, the way I see it, there are already a couple strip clubs spread out in the flats, and this proposal would move them altogether in a more out of the way section of the flats.
  14. While I agree that labeling the flats a red light district is not a good idea, it doesn't sound like this will be creating too many more strip clubs, just moving them. I haven't been there, but the area around Diamond's isn't very residential, is it? Maybe designating a strip club area will bring more regulation and control the problems better?
  15. "Look ma, that there is a real city!" "It's just like I thought it would be in my dreams" I know we on this forum usually look down on sub- and ex-urbanites for their ignorance toward the problems with sprawl, but they're not idiots. They know its a shopping mall just like we know its a shopping mall. And whether or not you care about my input (I'd say you cared enough to respond), I'm just saying that I don't understand how shopping (unhappily or not) at the worst possible form of retail (Great Northern) in one suburb is a good protest to a less-worse form of retail in another suburb.
  16. Does anyone know what they are building on the corner of Detroit and Crocker? I assume its just some outparcel restaurant, but isn't that where they were supposed to build a hotel?
  17. So you shop at the sprawling parking lot-city that is Great Northern out of spite? Yeah, that makes alot of sense.
  18. But guys, they have a Steak & Shake now. It's really very cosmopolitan.
  19. Word is they will be replaced by a Japanese/Hibatchi restaurant.

My wife works at Hyland. I wouldn't bank on them leaving their current building anytime soon. Its pretty new and I think they already have a plan to expand it. And AJ Hyland isn't the entrepeneur, really. His older brother, Packy, started the company with the current CIO. Packy left to start a new company, Workflow.com, and AJ took over. So really, Packy is the entrepeneur.
  21. More on Zocalo, from Trifecta's website. http://www.trifecta-mg.com/tmgZocalo.php
  22. There was this, from the Free Times' Bites column last week: Imagine making your way down East Fourth Street, turning into a narrow, winding alleyway, ultimately arriving in a lively Mexican town square. According to Michael Auger, managing partner of Trifecta Management, the California-based outfit that brought us the Corner Alley, diners coming to Zocalo Mexican Grill can expect such an experience. "People will walk through a set of gates and down a 40- to 50-foot alley that slowly takes them from downtown Cleveland to a little slice of Mexico," Auger explained during a call from California. Shooting for a Cinco de Mayo opening, Zocalo will be the first of its kind in the nation, and the first Mexican restaurant in the immediate area. "Mexican food is one of the fastest growing ethnic cuisines across the US," Auger added, "and the Mexican spirit of people celebrating and having fun falls right in place with what East Fourth Street is all about." At 4,500 square feet on two levels, the multi-zoned restaurant will seat about 180. The kitchen and main dining room will be located on the main level, and the bar and cantina will be upstairs. Auger described the atmosphere as evoking the color and feeling of a Mexican coastal resort, like Cabo San Lucas, "with no level of swanky formality." Diners can expect fresh-made tortillas, guacamole made table-side and mesquite-grilled meats and seafood. Prices for most dinner entrees will be $8-$16. The restaurant will serve lunch and dinner seven days a week, while a walk-up window will serve a limited menu for daytime and late-night take-out.
  23. Oh, they had happy hour until 7 as well...$1 off drinks, i think.
  24. We checked out The Buckeye Beer Engine last night and its amazing. They had about 25 beers on tap...3 of their own and the rest craft/micro brews from all over plus their bitter on cask. The only mainstream beer they seemed to carry was PBR. The beer menu was on a dry erase type board, so I'm assuming the lineup will change frequently. Last night I had the cask bitter, the 76 IPA, a Rogue Chocolate Stout and a Dogfish Head Aprihop....all delicious. They specialize in burgers, so thats what we ate. I got the West Side burger which came with cheddar, grilled onions and a perogi on top. My buddy got the Cyclops burger which had a sunny side egg on top. Both great. They came with homemade chips and a deep fried pickle spear...if you've never had a deep fried pickle, they are awesome. You could substitute a portabella cap, blackbean burger or chicken for any burger. Burgers were around $8 and the beers were mostly $4.
