Cleveland: Demolition Watch
I find it odd that Michelle Jarboe keeps referring to the one building as "a former bookstore". Isn't that the building that was, until Frangos bought it, a law firm? Former bookstore gives the image of a vacant, rundown storefront. Or am I thinking of the wrong building?

^I think the lakewood place is called Barcoa or something like that. There is a sign in the window, but I can't remember the exact name.

Cleveland: Hotels, Conventions, and Tourism News & Info
I don't think this has been posted about anywhere, so I'll pass along something I heard: A friend of mine works at the Crown Plaza downtown and said that the hotel is being sold to Westin and will get a $100 mill+ makeover. Now he's not a high up so I'm not sure of the validity, but he's not one to make up things either. I would imagine if true, it would be a direct result of the med mart.

In the crains article about it, Doug Petkovic, Symon's business partner, said they have also been looking downtown for a bspot location.

Cleveland: Restaurant News & Info
Its strange that he said they would have had to sacrifice majority shares of the company to locate in the Grind space. At first I thought maybe it was the ABC/XYZ people he was breaking with, but then in the comments (that now seem to be deleted) he said he was still looking forward to working with ABC/XYZ. Maybe the landlord at Grind wanted a huge cut of revenue? Majority seems crazy, though. Oh well, looking forward to having them in Lakewood. The only spots I can think of that are empty are the Maria's space and the new space on the corner of Warren/Detroit.

Cleveland: Food Trucks/Carts News & Discussion
I saw another new food truck called strEat Mobile Bistro outside of the Flying Monkey on Sat afternoon. I think it was their 1st or 2nd week. I didn't try the food, but the menu looked interesting.

The Official *I Love Cleveland* Thread
that worst winter ranking still drives me crazy. They used average daily temperature for the whole year to deterimine the worst winter, which is the stupidest methodology I can think of. So if a place has really cold winters but has really hot summers to drag up their avg temp (like Minneapolis) their winters aren't as bad as somewhere (like Cleveland) that has less extreme temp differences between winter and summer.

I may be wrong, but I think the regulations are part of a grant program. If you want money from the city, then you have to follow their rules.

^I think its called "Plank Road Tavern", so, unfortunately, I'm guessing its not a brewery. Hopefully its a nice bar, though. They've been doing alot of work on it.

Super Cleveland
The southside of Riverside Dr (west of McKinley) is Cleveland, including Hogsback Ln, which leads down into the Metroparks. I'm not positive where the boundaries are, but I would guess you are either in Cleveland or Rocky River driving down hogsback and right on Park Dr until you get to Rockcliff Dr, which takes you up to Rocky River. So I do think you can drive directly from Cleveland to RR.

Cleveland: Food Trucks/Carts News & Discussion
^I think its more the takeout lunch places that pay high rents to be near a place like public square. If a food truck can pull up for free and park right outside, say, The Flaming Ice Cube's door, then thats a severe competitive advantage...enjoying the spoils of a prime location without having to pay for it. I agree its a dog eat dog world in business, but if, in the extreme example, food trucks put all of the public sq lunch spots out of business, think what public sq would look like when the food trucks went home for the evening. There is a balance that needs to be struck and thats what zoning and permits are all about. Doesn't Portland have a street where all the food trucks line up and park? Like a food truck food court? Does anyone know if thats by design or just how its worked out?

Cleveland: Suburban Crime & Safety Discussion
There's also something about suicide that is almost contagious. The more common it is in a group, the more a person sees it as a viable option. There was an essay in one of Malcolm Gladwell's books about a tiny island nation where the teen suicide rate was incredibly high, and there was no real reason for it...it just all of a sudden became an epidemic.

^Though truthfully, I think Tratner is better than any of the reviewers the PD uses. I understand the complaint about CLE needing better restaurant critics, but I don't think kebab explanation is a big deal.
