What project is this?

I’ve noticed this too. Think of it as “Urban builder-grade.”

Does anyone here know what the large excavation just getting underway at the southwest corner of SR43 and Meloy Road is for?

Is the lot next door where Fairmount’s new building is supposed to go? I’d hate to see that blank wall stay long term.

Cleveland: Random Visualizations & Massings
Geowizical, thanks for doing these, they are great. I wish I had the tools and skills that you do at my disposal. What would really make an interesting exercise in comparison would be if the individual buildings were interchangeable between the skylines. As an illustration, what would it look like if you dropped Key Tower for instance in Columbus? I’m thinking that would demonstrate how Cleveland has a much bigger base of mid-rise buildings in the CBD that don’t even show up because they are hidden by the 400 plus footers. Think about the gargantuan street presence of the 925 for example, yet it doesn’t even register in these views.

Yes, Beacon is only big enough to be visible in the west view.

I personally love that idea, but I’m also hoping it can be somewhat restrained. On one hand it’s impossible to ignore the obvious potential use of color as a branding opportunity for a global paint / coatings behemoth, on the other hand it could be… impossible to ignore in the night sky. We’ve heard how the SHW company culture is somewhat conservative, so I’m guessing they might not want this to be too showy by grabbing all the attention in the skyline. Also remember it’s been reported there will be placement of a logo or company branding near the top of the tower on both the east and west sides. With all that going on, it would be easy to overdo, so I’m hoping Pickard exercises a little restraint.

@dave2017 great job. I’ve been underwhelmed with the renders so far, but these made me realize that details can make all the difference. Also, is it just me, or did you intentionally make the bottom base stone facade as an homage to AmeriTrust center, which I recall was to have a similar treatment, just one block east ?

I'm guessing that would add a LOT of cost to the garage.

Interestingly, the project page describes that tower as 520,000 square feet of space. Must be much smaller floorplates than SHW, which I think is supposed to be around 1 million square feet, at the same height.

Oh, I think it’ll be worth the wait! After years of speculation, to finally see an official rendering of what is coming will be a turning point, moving the discussion from imagination to a tangible image concept. The next big turning point then will be the movement of dirt.

By Susan Glaser, cleveland.com CLEVELAND, Ohio — The timing isn’t perfect – proposing a new airport terminal after a historic drop in air travel. But Cleveland Hopkins International Airport officials are gearing up to unveil a plan for a nearly-new terminal to be constructed in phases in the years ahead. The preferred terminal design – not yet finalized – is likely to include rebuilt, wider concourses; an expanded ticketing area; a relocated rental car facility; centralized Transportation Security Administration screening; a new, centrally-located Customs facility; redesigned entry roadways and more. https://www.cleveland.com/business/2021/02/cleveland-hopkins-readies-proposal-for-new-airport-terminal.html

Like many, once it became known that SHW purchased the Jacobs lot, I assumed we'd be returning to the more enclosed feeling of public square, encircled by 4 tall towers. "Confusing" rings true to me, because I'm having a hard time imagining how things will feel with the main tower set back along 3rd as opposed to right up on the square. But it will no doubt be a vast improvement over the crater as it stands today, and as it has stood for 30 years. With the stated desire to break ground in Q4, I imagine we'll see renderings before too long. Hopefully Pickard has something special in the works. I guess we'll have to wait and see.

Did they back off of the office plan? I’d thought they originally presented it as an office building.

Akron: West Hill / West Akron / Sherbondy Hill: Development and News
You can see it in the video included in the channel 3 story, but I didn’t notice this until I read the Beacon Journal article: At the top left of the second picture in this article there is a tallish building sketched in near downtown called the I Promise Institute. This is the first I’ve heard that, and there’s no mention of it in the article. I wonder what that is. https://www.beaconjournal.com/story/news/2020/12/15/tangier-restaurant-sold-lebron-james-foundation/3902454001/

The flip side to this is that the pandemic may actually drive companies, including SHW, to increase their office footprint. Space and distancing guidelines may necessitate an increased amount of square footage per employee to keep them spaced further apart, recognizing the potential for future pandemics. The in-between result may be some staff work from home, those who don't will need to be further apart, netting out to zero change in overall space needs.

Cleveland: Historic Photos
While we all wait for the next construction crane to show up downtown, here's some visual highlights of the golden decade ('82-'92) of tall building construction in Cleveland. Was there any another 10 year period that saw the skyline change so much: Medical Mutual, Ohio Bell, Eaton, Sohio, North Point, Tower City, Society + Marriott, Bank One? I used to go downtown on Saturdays during this period to witness and record some of the big changes underway with a vague sense that someday in the future it might be interesting to look back at. I wasn't there to capture all of them, but I did get most of the big ones. Sohio, with the Hanna fountains in the foreground: Cleveland & Sohio: Reaching New Heights (but not really) North Point The birds of Huron Kong, just for fun Society just getting underway Moving above the next door neighbor Rear view Kong lives The Underground Garage Growing up Demolition getting underway for Ameritrust Getting up there My lame attempt at artistic photography The Birds of Superior Detail shot Probably my favorite of the bunch. Society, Marriott, Bank One, and Ameritrust (sigh) in one shot. From TT observation level High Hopes Bank One nearly topped out What is and what would never be Gone Daddy Gone Starting to taper off Only bits & pieces remaining

Cleveland: Historic Photos
Something I've wanted to do for a long time and finally gotten around to: Scanning old construction pics I took downtown in the 80's and early 90's. Society, Tower City, Bank One, Sohio and North Point while under construction are all included. I don't know if they're considered historic. Is this the best place to put them, or is there another topic better suited to it? There's 77 total I've uploaded to a Flickr album, so probably too many to put here. Maybe share just the best highlights?

Cleveland: Outlet Mall Proposal for Lakefront
I would argue the outlet mall in Lodi is even sadder! Thought I’d heard somewhere that Simon floated a plan to essentially bulldoze most of Aurora Farms and rebuild. I’m guessing that’s been held up by the pandemic too.

Cleveland: Downtown: Tower at Erieview & Galleria Renovation
Does anyone remember a proposal with a rendering from around the time the Galleria was added showing a greener cladding on the tower with a peaked rooftop added?
