Cleveland: North Collinwood / Waterloo Arts District: Development and News
A few somewhat recent news items missing from this thread... Great news for the area. Welcome to Collinwood: Signs of life springing forth on East 185th Street For many Clevelanders, memories of bygone E. 185th St. conjure up visions of its epic annual street festival, movies at the La Salle, and bike rides down to the lake. Debra Drobnick is no exception. Born and raised in Euclid, Drobnick has fond recollections of growing up just one street away from E. 185th St., so it’s rather poetic that she’s now part of the street’s renaissance as one of the forces behind uber-popular Irie Jamaican Kitchen. “We have people coming from the far West side, Medina, and Ashtabula to try the food, so [the restaurant] has become somewhat of a destination in itself,” says Drobnick. “For me, having a business here is definitely like coming home.” http://www.freshwatercleveland.com/features/collinwood020719.aspx Collinwood’s Lasalle Theater Begins Its Second Act The historic LaSalle Theater in Collinwood is once again a shining gem in the neighborhood. Built in 1927, it has recently been transformed into an event venue and community center that features an exhibit hall, a stage for local theater groups and arts programs and meeting space for businesses and community members. The transformed theater now provides a new venue for the community to host important events, from birthday parties to weddings, and everything in between. The re-birth of this structure has created new opportunities as well. Apartments on the upper floor have been added – and leased! Additionally, retail locations have been incorporated into the building’s frontage and face the popular and heavily trafficked East 185th Street. http://www.clevelandnp.org/collinwoods-lasalle-theater-begins-its-second-act/ Cleveland's legendary Humphrey Popcorn, a Euclid Beach icon, to open shop Cleveland, Ohio – Cleveland’s legendary Humphrey Popcorn company is popping. The company launched by Dudley Humphrey back in the 1890s will soon open its first retail location in Cleveland in decades. On January 26, the Humphrey Popcorn Company will celebrate its grand opening at 819 East 185th Street – not far from the iconic Euclid Beach Park that made Humphrey a household name in Cleveland. The shop will be featuring Humphrey’s famous popcorn balls, popcorn and cheese corn, popcorn kernels and candy kisses, as well as other retro candies and Euclid Beach Park accessories. They will also be featuring another local classic, Bakers Candies, best known for their chocolate whips. The current owners of Humphrey Popcorn, Joanne Lynch and Mike Prokop, who bought the company in 2011, also purchased the rights and recipes to Bakers Candies. https://expo.cleveland.com/life-and-culture/g66l-2019/01/9ddf7d8f4a2238/clevelands-legendary-humphrey.html http://collinwoodobserver.com/read/2019/03/10/humphrey-popcorn-east-185th-street-store-966 (apparently just opened a short while ago)

Cleveland: West Park / Kamms Corners: Development and News
New coffee house is brewing at Five Points in West Park: A Place in the Sun CLEVELAND, Ohio - It's almost show time for 5 Points Coffee & Tea, a new family-operated coffee shop that will open later this summer in the brick building at 3600 West Park Road, at the West 159th Street, West Park and Tuttle Avenue intersection known as Five Points in Cleveland's West Park neighborhood. Conor Boylan said the shop will bring a taste of Ireland to the Five Points area. The project has been a labor of love for Boylan and several other family members. They bought the building about a year ago and have been working on it ever since. "We did the interior demolition and much of the work ourselves," he said. Boylan said. Major work was required, including a new roof, concrete and electrical work, plumbing and more. The project is part of the Kamm's Corners Development Corp. Storefront Renovation Program. Scalish Construction is also working on the coffee shop. http://www.cleveland.com/sunpostherald/index.ssf/2017/07/post_80.html

Lakewood: Development and News
Carnegie's proposal would be amazing for Lakewood. This is a great opportunity to transform downtown Lakewood, a plot of land this size doesn't open up every day. Keeping the arched entryway is a fantastic way of giving the site some character. Either proposal would be great but the high rise would truly transform Lakewood. I do agree with the statement "the lack of a central civic space was a glaring omission in the original plan for the City." I never really thought about it that way but I never felt compelled to specifically "go downtown" in Lakewood - it always just felt like another neighborhood. I didn't see this anywhere in the article - how is this being funded? Is any of it funded by the city or is this all private?

Wow, please keep us updated! That would be super cool to have right down the street. I presume they'd have a serving area on the first floor with the upper floors for production/aging? Seems perfect that it has no windows, at least for the storage aspect. Cut some windows out on the first floor and put some art up on the upstairs walls. Yes please!

Some news on the former Neubert Painting building that Barroco bought a little back. Barroco owner plans Latin American-inspired Casablanca Urban Cantina in Lakewood http://www.cleveland.com/entertainment/index.ssf/2016/10/barroco_grill_owner_plans_lati.html CLEVELAND, Ohio - As an artist, Juan Vergara loves the challenge of a blank canvas. The chef-owner of Barroco, the Colombian-themed restaurant that opened in Lakewood's Birdtown neighborhood in 2011, transformed a former pizza kitchen into the lively, colorful eatery it is today. On any given night, live Latin music spills into the outdoor and alley patio. He'll soon add his touch to a new Latin American-inspired concept, Casablanca Urban Cantina, which he hopes to open in the summer of 2017. The bar and restaurant will take over the former Neubert Painting building at 12108 Madison Ave. With less than a quarter mile distance from Barroco, Vergara says the location allows him to never be too far from keeping a watchful eye on both restaurants. "We considered other places in Cleveland, but we really wanted to keep investing in Birdtown," says Vergara. "This neighborhood is where we grew up as a restaurant." Vergara is keeping his menu under wraps, but promises it will be a new concept to Cleveland, similar to the way Barroco raised the profile of arepas in the city. One of his biggest goals is to maintain a high quality at a low price point.

Gabe's Deli is officially closed. Owner is moving to Austin. Sad because it was the best deli I've tried in Cleveland and they were doing pretty good business. http://www.clevescene.com/scene-and-heard/archives/2016/09/26/gabes-deli-in-lakewood-closes-its-doors-on-october-7th Now what will move into there? I'm thinking a brunch/cafe place could do well. One of my favorite patios in the area. It would alternate with Clifton Martini and Wine Bar being open (brunch spot open mornings and early afternoon, Wine Bar open late afternoon/evening). That's kind of what Gabe's Deli did - it closed at 4pm before the Wine Bar opened.

Lakewood: Development and News
You're misrepresenting my viewpoint - when did I say that Lakewood should continue to destroy more buildings for parking lots? I was just looking on the bright side of something that already happened and can't be changed. I'm glad one building is gone - probably the worst condition storefront in the whole city aside from the ones connected to the Hilliard Theater. Change can't happen overnight and adding population density to that section of Lakewood just isn't going to happen (if you have ideas, I'm all ears!). Madison Village has tons of dead storefronts and parking will entice businesses to move there. You have to admit that private money in Cleveland will look at parking spaces when considering putting a store there. Anyway - back on subject. L.B.M., a Cocktail Bar and Kitchen, to Open in Birdtown District of Lakewood When it opens later this year, L.B.M. (you’ll have to find out for yourself) will be a casual cocktail bar with a full-service kitchen and chef. The inspiration for the concept originated in Chicago, says Ho. “Scofflaw in Chicago is my favorite bar,” he explains. “When I went three or four years ago they were doing eight-dollar cocktails. That’s what started my train of thought. If a place like that can survive in Chicago selling eight-dollar cocktails, it would kill in Cleveland.” Ho says that his spot will utilize the same high-quality ingredients and talent of other cocktail bars, but at a price point that makes it more of an everyday type of place. His goal is to create a casual, comfortable environment that welcomes all budgets. http://m.clevescene.com/scene-and-heard/archives/2016/09/21/lbm-a-cocktail-bar-and-kitchen-to-open-in-birdtown-district-of-lakewood

Businesses need parking to survive, it's just a fact. The old Player's (I forget what it's called now) and Angelo's are always busy and fill up the municipal lots nearby their businesses. Not cheering the creation of missing teeth, as someone who lives in the neighborhood and has actually seen the inside of the building, it was long gone and 5 years ago it was already past saving. Let's not tear down other buildings, the city really should step up enforcement. Sent from my SHIELD Tablet K1 using Tapatalk
