Cleveland: Shoreway Boulevard Conversion
I agree. This is in no way, shape or form a Boulevard. It's just irritating. It's nearly impossible to go 35 because it's a freaken highway! I can see it being 40mph, going 45mph is pretty comfortable. But going 40mph is really difficult. Why don't Cleveland area planners know there is a speed limit above 35mph but below highway speeds? In North Olmsted on a small stretch (50mph) and Detroit Rd in Westlake (40mph) but other than those two, I can't really think of any places with speed limits greater than 35mph in Cuyahoga County though they would be suitable in a lot of areas.

Cleveland: What Cleveland Neighborhood or Suburb do you live in?
Yeah, Madison Village was heavily based in alt culture which fell out of style in the late 2000s and the area suffered a lot. From what I've heard, for a while Madison Village was known for being an area getting worse and people tried to disassociate the name. The Lakewood Car Culture show used to be called Madison Village Car Culture or something like that. Definitely a bit of ways to go and we can definitely thank Mahalls for making the area cool again. I think the investment of Woodstock is a sure sign of things to come. Sent from my SHIELD Tablet K1 using Tapatalk

Cleveland: What Cleveland Neighborhood or Suburb do you live in?
I live in "Madison Village" in Lakewood. Since I bought a house here 4 years ago, things have changed quite a bit! Scalish Construction moved their office in the neighborhood and has their own renovated storefront that also houses a photographer. Madison Park has gotten quite a few nice additions (new lighted path, renovated skatehouse) and the Screw Factory open houses are fun to go to. Taco Tonto's has added a really nice rear dining room. BottleHouse has moved in (finally, no more random bars!) and Woodstock has renovated the old Trio's into a great looking building (both of those in the last year actually!). Plus Source Yoga has moved into the neighborhood, a great addition. Quite a few poorly thought out businesses (like "Luv my Curvs" and that painted furniture store) have moved into various storefronts and gone out but they seem to be getting more "legit" as time goes on. A pretty decent looking karate place opened up a few storefronts down from Source Yoga a couple of months ago. Excited to see what the next 4 years brings. Plus I live within 10 minutes walking of Birdtown, probably my emotional favorite neighborhood in Lakewood which is awesome because that area has really gone up since I moved here as well. Love that little area that's developing right by Griffin Cider/STEM/the new Scalish renovation going on.

Cleveland to Canada Ferry
How fast do freight ferries travel? That sounds like a very long journey if it doubles as a freighter. Just like if you go to Put-in-Bay there is a faster more expensive passenger only boat or the slower more affordable option with added freight. EDIT: A few here are listed with their speed. Most go 13-18mph and there's a super expensive looking one that can go 40mph. https://www.steamshipauthority.com/about/vessels

Lakewood: Development and News
Fantastic news and updates regarding the former Corner Pub building. I love Scalish, definitely one of the best in the area for small scale historic projects like this. http://www.freshwatercleveland.com/devnews/Veronika080916.aspx Lakewood's first historic tax credit to benefit classic 1915 building KARIN CONNELLY RICE | TUESDAY, AUGUST 09, 2016 Frank Scalish, owner of Scalish Construction, is attempting to revive Northeast Ohio’s history brick by brick. His latest project is an historic 5,000-square-foot building at 12301 Madison Ave. in Lakewood’s Birdtown neighborhood. Thanks to a $82,402 Ohio Historic Preservation tax credit, Scalish is renovating six apartments and the street-level store front of the 1915 structure constructed by Michael and Veronika Turza, who lived there until they died. Their children sold the building in the 1950s. The former home of the Corner Pub, which was actually two storefronts combined into one 1,250-square-foot space, previously housed a hardware store and a candy store. Scalish is currently talking to two potential retail tenants including a coffee chain and restaurateur. Scalish has already successfully uncovered the original wood storefront of the Veronika’s exterior. “What we’ve found intact we’ve refinished and restored to like the day it was built,” he boasts. “And most of the masonry is intact.” He is also restoring the building’s original glaze brick exterior while large glass doors are on order. Inside, Scalish removed four ceiling layers to reveal portions of the original tin ceiling. “We should have enough to do at least one side,” he says, adding that one of the previous owners tore out the ceiling to make way for HVAC. Scalish is refurbishing the original bar and the maple hardwood floors throughout the building. “It was a unique find hiding in plain sight,” he says. “We’re trying to preserve the original woodwork as much as possible.”

Skateboarding & Inline Skating in Ohio
I searched skateboarding on this forum and it pulled up zero results. I got my old inline skates out yesterday and took them on the bike lanes on a wide road near my house (in Lakewood, Ohio). The bike lanes are wide enough to skate completely in them and I was going 15-20mph the whole time on a 25mph road. When I got home, I told my parents and they asked if I knew it was illegal :wtf:. I looked up the laws and was shocked to find in Ohio, inline skating and skateboarding on roads is illegal. You must ride on the sidewalk, full of hazards from people to business patios to signs and planters. Not to mention Lakewood's buildings are so close to the sidewalk that I'd have to go 5-10mph to be safe and still have to slam on the brakes at every intersection (every 500ft). Better yet, skateboarding/inline skating in "business districts" is illegal which if you know Lakewood, are impossible to avoid (and I live in one). Is this another one of those "protect the kids" things? Am I crazy to think that on 25mph roads it should be legal to inline skate in the road? In Michigan it's legal on every road but the highway. I can maybe understand skateboards because stopping is very difficult and losing control is easy but it sucks for inline skaters. You are in control in some ways more than a bicycle. Both activities are such great exercise yet the laws make it extremely difficult to do them. Basically my only option that's 100% legal is to drive 10 minutes to the Rocky River reservation and enjoy the paths there or put my rollerblades in my backpack and bike there. What a pain. I'll be calling the local PD sometime soon and will post an update here. It's a state law so the best thing they can do is say they'll turn the other cheek.

Cleveland to Canada Ferry
A direct ferry service to Canada would be awesome. You can actually already take a ferry to Canada from Sandusky. It's a fun weekend trip, bring a bike. First take the ferry from Sandusky to Pelee Island and spend a day biking around there. Then take the ferry from Pelee Island to Kingsville. Both run by the same company. https://pelee.com/pelee-island-ferry-schedule/ You get dropped off near Point Pelee, a national park with lots of wetlands (you can rent kayaks). There's probably nothing to do in Kingsville but that and bike over to Colansanti's and play minigolf while eating donuts and head over to Birdie's Perch and eat poutine. But still, you made it to Canada!

You're talking about the past work above the glass right? Yeah, that was pretty crappily done. Here's a better photo of the glass face - https://www.facebook.com/woodstockbbq/photos/a.1682907371982517.1073741828.1681801542093100/1719016075038313/?type=3&theater.If you're talking about the bottom left, the individual bricks look pretty well matched to me. I don't know if it's possible to weather/darken the mortar lines but that would make a huge difference.

Lakewood: Development and News
Unfortunately I don't know anything - just that in the Birdtown History walk that was done recently, they mentioned that it was still in the works. Woodstock BBQ construction is coming along nicely! Here's how it looked previously - nice to see an abused storefront come back to life. https://www.google.com/maps/place/Trio's+Bar/@41.4770084,-81.7839873,3a,75y,343.72h,84.51t/data=!3m6!1e1!3m4!1sehTedjdkGiqNPi8Pk0BXMQ!2e0!7i13312!8i6656!4m5!3m4!1s0x8830f21caa528b43:0x601634efb6f26863!8m2!3d41.4772049!4d-81.7839985!6m1!1e1 And here's how it looked today during my walk. And here's a photo of the inside - couldn't change the angle without the reflections ruining the photo.

Cleveland: Asiatown: Development and News
That's so cool. I can't wait until the development starts forcing existing businesses to nicen their property/business. As someone who has frequented Asia Town for about 6 years now, I was so happy when Asia Food Co opened. It is by far the nicest grocery in the area and they're a newcomer. The building/mall is amazing and you can tell the developer really cares about the area. Good Harvest's building has a lot of potential and some nice employees (compared to Park to Shop and Tink Holl) but man is that store a dump. Tink Holl keeps moving stuff around but the inside of their store hasn't really improved. Will it take newcomers to start to put more pressure on the existing stores to renovate or will they have some forethough and do it preemptively?

This is pretty awesome, happy to see Lakewood taking care of Birdtown. There's so much history there. I hope that brewery opens up in the old church - last I heard plans hadn't fallen through completely.

Cleveland / Lakewood: The Edge Developments
I'm not allowed to post external links yet, but search "Lakewood designates Curtis Block, adjacent to Lakewood Hospital, as historic" and click the Cleveland.com article. It was always a shame to see this building sitting unused, hopefully the they renovate it sooner rather than later!

What newsletter is that? Do you have a link? I'm following him on Facebook but he didn't post about that. Here you go: [external link removed] Thanks for the link! How did you get the link? I don't live in his ward but live on the east side of Lakewood so I like to keep up with it. I guess people who actually live in the ward get it via snail mail.
