  1. I'd vote against naming anything First Street. I've always though the river was "First Street."

Based on what, the fact her campaign manager still subleases office space from the Charter Committee? The primary is September 10; what are they waiting for? I realize you're just being combative, but it's not just a "shared address" or "subleased office space." Read it again: The mailings actually say "Charter Committee of Cincinnati." It's not like that is the name of the building. If they didn't want to be associated with the Charter Committee, it would say "Qualls For Mayor, Address, etc." A better question: Why do you think they need to "endorse" someone for Mayor? Qualls has been endorsed by the Charter committee since she got back on Council (I think Yvette Simpson also has the dual endorsement). Is there another Charterite running for Mayor? If so, why would they need to endorse at all--and certainly why would they feel any need to endorse for the primary? It's far different from the Democratic party's situation, where both candidates have run as (and been endorsed as) Democrats in the past.

Based on that, I cannot imagine the Charter committee won't endorse her.

Here is the return address on the latest fundraiser invite I got (received three days ago, I think): Roxanne Qualls for Mayor Charter Committee of Greater Cincinnati 2 Garfield Place, Suite 300C (45202) I'd have to look, but I think that's also the mailing address that Yvette's campaign materials come from.
  5. A couple of those right before the first Terminal Tower shot look like they could be straight out of Over-the-Rhine. Terminal Tower is just a beautiful building. And Key Tower (is that what it's called?) is a nice-looking building, too. The only one I had a negative reaction to was the Ernst and Young building--is that new?? I don't remember seeing it before. Great shots!
  6. Yeah, it's off topic, but I went to lunch at the Senate something like 18 months ago for my birthday.

I'll have to look back, but I'm pretty sure that the address they come from is listed as the Charter Committee. Maybe she has changed that.

There's no "remains to be seen" about it. You ever get mailings from her? They have Charter Committee all over them.
  9. The Port OTR is aiming to be a casual sandwich shop--but I don't know if that's going to be more near Vine or on Main.

You're probably right about Edwin's mechanics, but Toronto hasn't had a good season in forever, so I don't know if their evaluation of anything is that great. I do think he could have played LF though. Left field might have been a possibility. Because of the positional premium with certain places--catcher, 3B, CF, SS, etc.--you are always better off to play someone there if they possibly can. By that I mean, even if the defense is subpar, if you can still live with it, you play a good offensive player at those positions (because most catcher are like Ryan Hanigan, and can't hit real well but can play well defensively). The fact that he is not playing 3B but is playing 1B and DH--the two positions that are by far the easiest to hide a bad fielder, and where people who have played other positions eventually move when their defense can't cut it--tells me that EE is not cut out for third, at least. As for LF, who knows? It's by far the easiest of the outfield positions. Would have depended on if he could handle the running/positioning/breaking on the ball. It's pretty doable, but then again Yonder Alonso looked awful when we tried him out there. I think EE was more athletic than that, but it's hard to say. He's certainly found a home and is raking. Good for him.

It's not as easy as "showing him how to throw from third." If it was, the Blue Jays would have him playing 3B, but they don't. His only future was as a 1B or a DH. I'm glad he's doing well, but unless he was going to play 1B, he wasn't going to be the answer there. I agree with you on the DL thing. I do not understand why we do this idiotic thing of having a guy not play for a few days but not go on the DL. No way Corky Miller should be getting major league at bats.

    Great stuff.
  13. My argument is how to prevent the desire to commit a violent crime is a more proactive and potentially successful measure than a Three Strikes law that has been proven to not deter crime. The amount of violent offenders in the country is incredible considering how controlled American society is. No other nation puts as many resources into law enforcement and surveillance. There's a difference between crime "deterrence" and crime "prevention." You said earlier that you wanted things that would "prevent" crime. I agree that societal improvements that reduce crime, improve the economy, etc. are preferable to later methods like three strikes laws. At the same time, if someone is already a hardened (violent) criminal, it is unfortunately too late, and the only real option for "preventing" future crime by that individual seems to be locking them up.
  14. I post twit pics (not instagrams) of construction. But I don't end up eating at the various OTR eateries as much as I would like. Still haven't been to Kaze yet! I do like Quan Hapa a lot though.
  15. Sure, but if someone is a repeat violent offender, finally saying "enough is enough" is preventing him from future violent crimes.
  16. I assumed they would make it more formal parking than the dirt lots already there. They are moving along on the new concrete walkway across to US Bank Arena, which will be a welcome replacement to the last one.

EDITED BECAUSE MY FRUSTRATION WAS SHOWING. As someone who lives in OTR, walks to work in downtown, eats at various OTR restaurants (and downtown), and spends more time in places like Washington Park and on Main Street than you can guess, let me say perhaps you should think a bit about who you are replying to before you say things like this.

I'd go with what I think turns out to be the consensus, based on the Atlantic Cities article about this: Ohio Indiana Michigan Illinois Wisconsin Minnesota (Those would be under the subgroup "Great Lakes") Iowa Nebraska Kansas Missouri North Dakota South Dakota (I'd put those under the "Great Plains" category) Kentucky, Pennsylvania, and Arkansas are definitely not Midwestern states. Nor are Montana, Wyoming, or anywhere with mountains. The only one I can really see an argument for adding is Oklahoma as similar to the "Great Plains" states, but I think it should be more properly grouped with Texas--either with a Texas/Arizona/New Mexico "south west" or with a Texas/Louisana/Arkansas "south central."
  19. Great photos, Jake. The new park (especially with the lighting features) is really photogenic.

June and July numbers are really tricky with the large number of school-related employees who suddenly become unemployed.

Well, the cranes are up, and when I went by today it certainly looked like they've started with the rebar in the very bottom levels.

I feel like you and I aren't actually shopping the same store, and I bet I am in there twice a week. Every try to get any meat besides ground beef? I asked for ground sirloin once, and they told me they'd tried to stock it for a week but it didn't sell. Don't get me started on the vegetables there. As I said, I am there at least twice a week for basics. But it is sorely lacking any variety, and while I feel like they are making an effort, it's a long way to go before it meets the needs of everyone in the neighborhood; as it is now, it certainly isn't meeting my needs, and I am two blocks away and ask them for certain things.
  23. Really? Come on. The route for this has been known for years! I wonder if Fox 19 is running a story on how the Liberty Way interchange "unfairly benefited" the property owners there.

Well, as a native of Appalachian Ohio, I can see how (at least back in the day) pretty much all of those towns would be places you wouldn't want to be as a minority. Since moving to Cincy, the only town I really heard about was Norwood--again, back in the day.
  25. Report makes it sound a lot less like a beating and a lot more like a punch that knocked a girl out.
