  1. ^^Not really. I looked it up online--I see that the only network television stations (ABC, NBC, CBS, Fox) are in Cleveland, not Akron. That answers my question.
  2. Cleveland's market is ranked 18th, while Cincinnati is 35th Does Akron have TV stations or is it served by Cleveland's? (As in, does CLE not get the benefit of the Akron metro for MSA purposes but does for TV market purposes.) I'd think the naming rights would be a pretty substantial deal. The $5 million/year the Ravens got would seem a reasonable benchmark/expectation. But as a Bengals fan, I will never let you live it down if you play in a dome! That's not AFC North football! ;)

Sad, sad news. He will be greatly missed.
  4. This line makes no sense: "The Streetcar debate has proven the strong reputation of a dangerous core in Cincinnati is not unfounded." It may have "proven" that the core has a reputation as being dangerous, but it surely hasn't proven that any reputation for being dangerous is not unfounded. That would require, you know, facts demonstrating a dangerous core, not people believing it. That's like saying "The Creation Museum has proven the strong belief that the earth is 6000 years old is not unfounded."
  5. I'm glad you were here last summer and so know the streets better than I. I live in Over the Rhine and walk the streets to and from work every day and Findlay Market every week, but I don't doubt your visit last summer lets you have your finger on the pulse. I have no idea what being born and rasied here has to do with anything; I've been here 20 years now, more than half of my life. Yes, the 2000s were worse. At some point you have to let go of what you thought a decade ago and actually look at what is going on around you. By your logic, no one should ever go to New York, because in the 1970s it was extremely violent and there was rampant street crime (prostitution, etc.) everywhere. I think your last paragraph speaks volumes. I get that you live in Europe (since you've only mentioned it on this board about 100 times). I do realize that American cities are more violent than European cities (I don't agree with your "internationally" statement; there are many, many cities in Latin/South America and Africa that are far more violent than US cities). But perhaps you should compare Cincinnati with other American cities when evaluating it. And maybe look at Cincinnati as it is today, not as it was in 2001. And I think you'd get a lot farther in these discussions if you didn't patronize every single person who responds to you.
  6. In fact, it doesn't look like Cincinnati is in the top 25 most dangerous cities (judged by violent crime per 100,000 residents) based on the latest stats: http://www.examiner.com/article/fbi-releases-top-25-most-dangerous-cities-america-list-for-2012
  7. Sorry, looks like that top ten list was 2011. Here's 2012. http://abclocal.go.com/ktrk/gallery?section=news/national_world&id=8854740&photo=1
  8. Honestly, might as well have some actual facts as opposed to "feelings" and perceptions. Here's the latest Downtown Cincinnati polling, which covers perceptions in the region of downtown and OTR: http://www.downtowncincinnati.com/Libraries/DCI_Publications/2012_Perceptions_Survey.sflb.ashx I didn't see Cincinnati on any "10 most dangerous cities" lists or anything like that when the latest FBI statistics came out, either. http://www.usnews.com/news/articles/2011/02/16/the-11-most-dangerous-cities I can't find any really recent articles--I suspect there will be more coming for year-end--but as of August 30, the overall crime rate in the city was down 7%, and the murder rate had dropped 27% year over year: http://www.wcpo.com/dpp/news/local_news/dramatic-drop-in-cincinnati-murder-rate As I said before, any crime is too much crime. But I don't think either public opinion or the statistics themselves are backing up your position. If you want to say that YOU feel unsafe in Cincinnati, that's fine--but that's your opinion, and you should expect that those who disagree with it will respond.
  9. City Blights' posts confuse me. You say "Cincinnati has too much crime and generally doesn't feel that safe," but you also say that you live in Europe. I don't see how you can have any idea what it "feels like" in Cincinnati right now if you aren't living here. Any crime is too much crime. But let's be honest. Cincinnati's crime rates have fallen, and continue to fall, dramatically. And despite what you may feel from continental Europe, the people who actually live here--as evidenced in the polls that get conducted each year asking about safety, particularly in downtown and OTR--feel safer and have better perceptions of the city.
  10. "Disability" in that charge means not allowed to possess weapons because of previous criminal history, drug dependency, or mental incapacity, not because of any physical disability. (Just FYI.)

Looks like Memphis is taking some huge hits from Delta. Going to be an even smaller "hub" than CVG is. http://news.cincinnati.com/usatoday/article/1736789?odyssey=obinsite

Those are good numbers for the three C's.
  13. ^^ Going back to the graphs about the number of worker. I think that you are thinking about this wrong. There is really nothing too shocking in what this showing. The leading edge of the boomers has just started reaching retirement age, so that 55-69 segment of the work force is just going to increase in numbers until the people born in the peak years of the baby boom start to finally retire. And as far as the 25-24 segment graph, yes we lost a lot of jobs but the population distribution behind the boomers who left this demographic during this time period is pretty flat, ie the number of people of turning 55 in a year equals the number turning 25. That makes a lot of sense. Of course there are a lot more 55-69 year old workers than there used to be; there are a lot more 55-69 year olds than there used to be, period, because of demographics (baby boomers) and advances in healthcare. Notice that the charts include there don't take into account the percentage of the 55-69 age group that is working, only raw numbers.
  14. Yeah, I'm wondering what we're expecting here. I certainly don't expect there to be anything built over Macy's that's as tall as either Carew or the Fifth Third Center.
  15. I went to the Five Guys at the Levee that took Johnny Rocket's old spot over there. Five Guys at the Banks would do well, I think.
  16. I didn't even realize they'd opened a Brooks Brothers in Kenwood. Shows how often I get out there.
  17. It does not indicate Brooks Brothers is definitely closing, but I don't like the tenor of it on that point, either.
  18. Developers plan 225 apartments above downtown Macy's by Dan Monk - Senior Staff Reporter - Business Courier Developers of the Fountain Place retail complex are working to build up to 225 apartment units in a high-rise above Macy’s Inc.’s downtown department store. It’s one of several upgrades aimed at improving the performance and longevity of the store closest to Macy’s corporate headquarters. “Macy’s has expressed their enthusiasm,” said Arn Bortz, a Towne Properties LLC principal who is working on the project with the city of Cincinnati and Cincinnati Center City Development Corp., or 3CDC. “We’re concentrating with Macy’s on giving them good reasons to stay.” More at link... http://www.bizjournals.com/cincinnati/news/2012/11/26/developers-look-to-keep-macys-store.html
  19. Sorry, I didn't see the responses till just now. Capell with a nice job finding the link. (Real world getting in the way of my Urban Ohio time...not fun.)
  20. I'm surprised Eighth and State hasn't mentioned the Ohio Supreme Court's decision this week on moving utilities.
  21. ^Tom Luken, not Charlie.

I was mortified in the first inning with the injury. If it's true that Cueto could pitch later in the series, it may actually work out to the Reds' benefit. You get to start Cueto later (game 3?), and Latos will be ready to pitch in either Game 4 or Game 5, since he only threw 57 pitches or so. I will take it. Really good to see Bruce locked in for Game 1. Hope he gets on one of those 3 week hot streaks.

It's official: The Indians have hired Francona. http://sportsillustrated.cnn.com/2012/baseball/mlb/10/06/indians-terry-francona-manager.ap/index.html?sct=hp_t2_a3&eref=sihp
  24. Yeah, they look better than the Browns.... BUT, i'd argue that the browns have a tougher schedule. The Browns have been in every game, except maybe Buffalo. We nearly beat the Ravens, a team that obliterated the Bengals. The game with the Bengals was close, so 1000x better might be a bit exaggerated. The rematch is coming up, so I suppose that will put in in perspective. Browns opponents so far: Philadelphia Eagles Bengals Buffalo Bills Baltimore Ravens. Next we get the Giants.... definitely a grind of a schedule. The beauty of it is by the end, the schedules won't be that different. The Bengals have a harder one on paper because they finished 3rd while the Browns finished fourth. Both teams play all the teams in the NFC East and the AFC West. Since the Browns finished last, they get the last place teams from the AFC East (Bills) and the AFC South (Colts), while the Bengals play the 3rd place team from each (Dolphins and Jags).
