Suburban Sprawl News & Discussion
Really interesting article on the returns you can expect for urban properties as opposed to suburban, based on study of Asheville, NC: http://www.theatlanticcities.com/jobs-and-economy/2012/03/simple-math-can-save-cities-bankruptcy/1629/

Cincinnati: Downtown: Smale Riverfront Park
I got there after the game had started--it was around 7:30. There was a steady stream of folks walking through toward the game, but probably not more than a couple dozen people checking out the park. Not bad for a Monday night. It's interesting to see the looks on the faces of people who just happen to be going by it on the way to a Reds game. Especially if you aren't aware of it, you can see how it would be very surprising. I was really most surprised/impressed by the Walnut Street steps/fountains. They are very cool, and very loud.

Went down there tonight. It is very impressive. Really an amazing place, and something you don't see many places. A terrific addition.

Another Dumb-a$$ List / Ranking of Cities
I saw that survey. Maybe it's just me, but that seems like a really weird thing to do.

Cincinnati: Random Development and News
It's at the backside of Fountain Square, basically--in the first floor of the Fifth Third parking garage, where Murray Bros. and the like is located. Directly across the street from the Center at 600 Vine.

Columbus: Downtown: Arena District Developments and News
This is unbelievably nitpicky, but looking at those renderings--if I am reading it right--I wish all three of the buildings making up the new Columbia Gas office space looked like the one building--the skinny, yellowish one. (That is part of the new construction, right?)

Ohio Cities' Downtown Population
Well here's the crux of the whole issue--are you defining "downtown" to include the CBD? Or do you define downtown to include those areas that are considered "downtown" by most Cincinnatians, which goes beyond the CBD?

Ohio Cities' Downtown Population
I don't believe this is a pissing match, I am not familiar with the boundaries of Downtown Cinci, so I was asking because in other reports they have stated their population around 5k, now its 13k. Atleast this estimate gives boundaries and breaks down the CBD and the adjoining downtown neighborhoods. Based on some comments this number may have caught some cinci folks off guard. Look at page 11 -- ColDayMan added the Census Tracts up and got a figure above 13,000. Really? As of page 10, his figure for downtown Cincy was 5,657 ... He included OTR after the fact as a courtesy ... So not surprising where the 13,000 comes from but surprising that OTR is being included :) Regardless of what each city's respective borders are, I'm actually more interested that civic leaders in Cincy tend to go with a population total that generously extends population estimates beyond traditional CBD boundaries to include OTR, while in Cleveland, our civic leaders tend to undercount our downtown population below what the Census shows for our traditional CBD. Two very different approaches, and I like Cincy's better :D In Cleveland, it seems like we've always got some advocacy for cutting the West Flats, the Campus District or the prison population. For all of the 3 Cs, I'd argue that it's less important where we count but that we count in the same places in 2020 that we're counting now that we counted in 2010. Love the unnecessary snark. Yes, he added the OTR total after request--and came up with a total for Downtown that includes the CBD, OTR, and Pendleton, which is, you know, what we're talking about here and what DCI used in its annual report.

Ohio Cities' Downtown Population
By which I mean to say that those calculating Downtown Cincinnati's population in the same was as DCI are not surprised by the figure.

Ohio Census / Population Trends & Lists
Aren't all of the Ohio metros gaining population (except maybe CLE)? You mention the 'decline of metro populations.'

It was great. (Psst....Joey Bats is the nickname for Jose Bautista in Toronto--I prefer Vottomatic....)

Cincinnati: Restaurant News & Info
I saw signs in the window at Bartini on my walk in today saying "Closed Until Further Notice." That's unfortunate--they take up a really big space right there on sixth street.

NBA: General News & Discussion
Not speaking in terms of anywhere specifically (and I hope this doesn't run afoul of Columbo's request--if it does, feel free to delete it)--but think about the coverage in this general area already by the NHL and the NBA. NHL teams in Pittsburgh, C-bus, Detroit, and a little farther out in Chicago and Buffalo. NBA teams in Cleveland, Detroit, Indy (and again in Chicago). That's a lot in geographic proximity. It's really pretty cool to think that living in Ohio, we can see lots of these teams within very reasonable drives if we want. I would love to see soccer take hold in the relegation system employed everywhere else. Then you can have soccer clubs all over the place that rise and fall with their fortunes.

NBA: General News & Discussion
I don't know that it's fan overlap so much as just being hard to support two teams that play at essentially the same time, with similar prices, etc. I have been racking my brain trying to think--are there any cities that have an NBA and NHL team, but not one of the other sports?

Cincinnati: Crime & Safety Discussion
Sorry, I should have been more precise--robbery is taking something by force or threat of force.

Cincinnati: Crime & Safety Discussion
I wasn't correcting your grammar. I was just taking your statement at face value--your later statement seems to have qualified that. And as for the stats, well, they're out there. There are between 400 and 500 thousand robberies each year (robbery under the law meaning taking something with use of a weapon). http://www.disastercenter.com/crime/uscrime.htm That same information indicates that there are about 15000 murders per year. As for the number of gun shot wounds, I haven't found very recent numbers. http://bjs.ojp.usdoj.gov/content/pub/ascii/fidc9397.txt This site gives a total of about 40,000 gunshot wounds in 1997. Obviously, not every robbery will involve a gun, and not every gunshot wound will come from a robbery. I have not seen anything (in my admittedly brief time even looking) that discusses that. But the numbers do show that gunshot wounds are far rarer in the US than the number of times each year someone has property stolen by force.

In working to get ready for surgery, they found out Rivera also had a blood clot in his calf. Scary stuff.

Cincinnati: Crime & Safety Discussion
And you didn't frame it in the way you have now--you actually said it's a major assumption that you would not get shot by a mugger.
-
Cincinnati: Crime & Safety Discussion
No, I don't, but I'm not out there saying that mugging victims get shot "all the time." If you don't want to be called on it, don't make unsupportable statements.
-
Cincinnati: Crime & Safety Discussion
Sorry, I just noticed this. Are you saying it's common for mugging victims to be shot "all the time" by the mugger? You have any data to back this up in Cincinnati (or anywhere else, for that matter)?

Cincinnati Reds Discussion
Yeah, I was pleasantly surprised that they did not ship Frazier down. They really need to do something about 3B and LF. I hope that Heisey starts hitting--I have no faith in Ludwick--but perhaps Frazier playing out there would be good. I'm very concerned about Rolen. He's been a great player for a long time, but it may be the end of the line.
