Cincinnati Streetcar / The Connector News
But from my understanding the building isn't dilapidated, so if it is vacant, that is the property owners choice. If it was in bad condition I could see a case being made. Also, there isn't anything wrong with someone from California owning property in Ohio. Are you telling me there are no other choices to house this facility? So a select group of people essentially made the decision that they can take this property away from someone because they'd rather have a maintenance facility there. I'm sorry, I know there may be a few good uses for eminent domain, but IMO it needs to be a last result and all options should be explored first before people can take property away from someone else. Was that the case here? They don't just "take" the property from someone. The property owner will be compensated. The constitution does not give the people an unlimited right to have property and hold it forever even if that property is needed for a public use--it gives them the right to be fairly compensated for the property. The alternative would be simply unworkable. Imagine a highway that zig-zags like a piece of spaghetti instead of going reasonably straight, because some of the property owners didn't want to sell out, and there were "other options" before the last resort of ED--such as creating a zig zag highway....

Cincinnati: Downtown: The Banks
Isn't Tower Place Mall pretty windowless? That's one of the main complaints about the current college of law (in addition to being outdated in other ways).

Cincinnati Streetcar / The Connector News
I think the poll is actually a step forward as far as the Enquirer's coverage. Instead of asking whether the streetcar should go forward, they are now asking what people think of the vehicles. I'll take it.

Cincinnati Streetcar / The Connector News
Did anyone else catch the UrbanCincy Twitter feed? It indicated that Mallory discussed/announced five phases of streetcar expansion and two regional light rail lines. I gather these were just discussed generally as hopeful projects rather than anything specific?

The Tea Parties War on Mass Transit
Can't speak for him, but it seems that if conservatives are worried about "crushing" obligations caused by transit workers, they would be attacking the road/highway-related workers who are unionized and no doubt outnumber mass transit workers by a significant factor.

Cincinnati: Downtown: The Banks
That is a great picture. I was watching from my office in the new Great American Tower, and there were people everywhere at the Banks on Opening Day. Even better, you could tell that the lines for Holy Grail, Toby Keith's, and the Lager House were out the door after the game. Toby Keith's actually looked like a mob scene near as I could tell. Re: the In Between--not only is it still open, but I bet it's doing the best business it's done in awhile. The newly-redone side is really nice. It's got exposed brick, and seems like something you'd see in the Gateway Quarter. It's benefiting from the influx of workers into Great American, I think. I went there for Happy Hour one day in February--no game, nothing going on downtown--and the place was packed. I imagine it will only get better with the Reds season starting.

Cincinnati: Downtown: Fort Washington Way Cap
Isn't the part of 71 that needs to be capped already capped with the tunnel? Or is the suggestion to cap 71 from, say, P & G all the way to Mt. Adams?

Cincinnati Streetcar / The Connector News
Are you actually suggesting that the Duke worker would be in the streetcar ROW working and the streetcar still running? Otherwise, what does it matter? The streetcar is on rails. You know where it is going, unlike cars zooming along Colerain Avenue at any speed.

Cincinnati Streetcar / The Connector News
Those commentors could have been Duke stockholders. Corporate America is extremely sensitive to stockholders, comparable to how government is sensitive to voters. If public perception is that Duke is using stockholder's assets to subsidize the utility relocation for Cincinnati Streetcar project, then Duke's stock price could be negatively affected. Duke will likely do anything it can to protect its stock price, and that includes playing hardball with the City of Cincinnati. I'm sorry, I can't let this slide. Are you suggesting that these people are Duke stockholders, and that they believe the best way to voice their concerns to Duke is by commenting on a newspaper article? I agree (to some extent) that companies are responsive to shareholder concerns (but that is with the big caveat that it depends on a lot of factors, including the size of the shareholder's stake in the company). But I cannot agree that this would in any way reflect a dialogue between Duke and its shareholders. If the shareholders want to complain to Duke about it so their concern could be heard, they will go to the investor relations department and do so.

Cincinnati Streetcar / The Connector News
I think you are mistaken. Duke is a very powerful organization. It's funny that you used the word "powerless" because ironically, regardless of the utility relocation issue, the Cincinnati Streetcar project is absolutely dependent on Duke for electric power, unless Mayor Mallory wants to build his own plant. This makes no sense. Are you saying that commenters 1 and 3 are Duke Energy representatives?

Another Dumb-a$$ List / Ranking of Cities
(Or should I say, the low unemployment does not appear to be the result of a robust recovery as compared to other places.)

Another Dumb-a$$ List / Ranking of Cities
Interesting. Apparently we have been somewhat fooled by the Cleveland areas lower unemploymnet rates than most places, since the same area is doing worse than most other places in the ohter ranking overall. I was really hoping things were turning around there. I don't know that that's necessarily the takeaway. CLE still has the 7% unemployment on that list, which puts it ahead of other places. But it does seem that the low unemployment is not because the recovery has been strong in Cleveland; I guess it just didn't fall as far as other places.

You understand that a "tax credit" is not a direct giving of money, right? Or are you just willfully distorting what is going on with this comment?

Um....Wyoming does physically border Lincoln Heights, no? Very confused by what you mean there.

Cincinnati: Evolution and Changing Perceptions of Urban Neighborhoods
I was actually thinking of Wyoming, as well. It is significantly different than many of the places around it--including Lincoln Heights and Lockland.

Beautiful shots, Sherman. Are the sunset ones from Newport? I'm trying to figure out where in Covington they could be.

Cincinnati: Evolution and Changing Perceptions of Urban Neighborhoods
I think it will get like Mt. Adams. I'm thinking/hoping Wicker Park in Chicago. Of course, LRT through the existing ROW under the Parkway is what draws me to those economic possibilities. I can't see saturation in the basin without streetcars serving Northside through the West End or LRT. The lack of materialized rehabs are a major component to the high price tags right now in OTR. Lots north of Liberty can still be had for a song, and NW of the Parkway and Liberty is even cheaper to invest in for now. Brighton archictecture is fantastic, someone is going to realize the potential for a "Quarter district" there and make a killing being in such an optimal location. Being on the Parkway and being able to slide past uptown instead of through it will be attractive to a lot of people. Agree with you on all of this.
