CINCINNATI - UO Meet: August 6th, 2016 @ Noon
Alright, why don't we go ahead and set it for noon? (No idea how warm it will be that day, but it seems like a reasonable time.) Also, it would be great if I had some idea of how many folks will be coming that day, so please feel free to RSVP. (You can PM me if you'd rather.) Thanks!

I'm sure that can be arranged--good access to Findlay Market and Main Street from our place.

CINCINNATI - UO Meet: August 6th, 2016 @ Noon
So, I have the go ahead from the boss and from CDM to invite folks over for a UO get-together on Saturday, August 6. Probably going to be around midday. We will iron out the details, but hoping that everyone who wants to check it out can come see it. Oh, and not only should we have just about all our furniture by then, but you'll be pleased to know that as of Thursday evening, the painting is officially done!

Smart Columbus
It sounds like the latter rather than the former. It really does, but I truly hope urban mass transit is a part of this project. Autonomous automobiles might be closer than we think, however it won't solve the problem of moving large amounts of people in a dense urban environment in an environmentally-conscientious way. I recall reading that some of this grant money could go to improving and expanding the CMAX, which could lay the groundwork for eventually upgrading to rail. Here's hoping. Thanks for the updates. It sounded like it was meant to be something along those lines rather than traditional rail transit--I haven't read any of the requirements, but presumably it lays out the type of thing they are thinking about. Regardless, like you say, if this can somehow to be leveraged to help set up a starter streetcar or light rail line, that would be good.

Smart Columbus
Could this be used to kickstart a rail system? Or does it have to be something completely new, like driverless cars?

Columbus: Downtown: Millennial Tower
Yeah, those video boards look like they'd be huge. Also don't quite get the name. If they stick with Millennial Tower, I demand that someone build a Gen X Tower nearby to complement it. Give it some sort of plaid design.

Cleveland Cavs Discussion
I agree with you, Hts. I don't think Golden State is a good matchup for the Cavs. In addition to your point about the multiple people who can guard LeBron, they seem equipped to take advantage of the Cavs roster. They have a lot of options to respond to whatever combination of the Cavs put out there. The Warriors really struggled against OKC's defense, but that was an extremely long/athletic/rim protecting group, with Adams/Durant/Ibaka/Kanter/etc, applying a ton of pressure. The Cavs don't have a lineup with that same length or defensive ability at the rim. Thompson is rugged, but not terrifically long. Love has always been a great rebounder, but doesn't give a lot of rim protection. LeBron could certainly play that way, but I don't know that the rest of the Cavs pieces are built for that kind of defensive approach. Watching last night, the other problem is there's not really anywhere to "hide" Irving on defense against the Warriors. I don't mean that he is necessarily a terrible defender (though I don't think he's a good defender), but he is at a significant size disadvantage out there. Thompson is obviously way too big, and Barnes and Iguodala are good enough on offense to make them pay if he guards them. Livingston really showed how Kyrie can struggle with size. Still, it's a long series, with lots of potential adjustments to be made. The Cavs lost a game they are supposed to lose. It's disheartening that they didn't steal one where Curry/Thompson combined for only 20, but that doesn't mean they can't steal game 2.

Reds are not good. Ugh.

English Premier League
This is not correct. Every team that has been around anything close to 100 years has won a World Series. The only teams that have not won a World Series yet are: Texas Rangers (founded in 1961 as the Washington Senators) San Diego Padres (founded in 1969) Tampa Bay Rays (1998) Colorado Rockies (1993) Houston Astros (1962) Milwaukee Brewers (1969, as the Seattle Pilots) Washington Nationals (1969, as the Montreal Expos) Seattle Mariners (1977) Note, of course, that there are other "new" teams (the Royals, the Marlins, etc.) that have already won the World Series. The only two teams never to even appear in the world series are the Expos/Nationals and the Mariners.

Ohio Census / Population Trends & Lists
Latest city information is out. Haven't looked at the statistics directly, but according to this story in the Cincinnati Business Courier, Columbus added 12,000 people last year. That's half (maybe just a smidge less) of the 24,000+ metro growth that was discussed upthread. More exciting as a Cincinnatian is the city adding people again. Small numbers, to be sure--about 500--but after decades of population loss, to have four straight years of population growth, no matter how small, is exciting. http://www.bizjournals.com/cincinnati/news/2016/05/19/cincinnati-s-population-inches-up-again.html?ana=e_cinci_rdup&s=newsletter&ed=2016-05-19&u=mdqxSjVwpbwLHTa%2Bxb7xwQ0dc4b18a&t=1463665111&j=73334722

You may have meant to type "most recent culprit," but you wrote "worst recent culprit." I think that's why you got the response you did.

ColDayMan[/member] -- I have the go-ahead from the boss for a UO forum meet, sometime in the summer (probably late June or July). Let me know what kind of details we need to come up with, etc. And it better be BYOB!

FC Cincinnati Discussion
Nippert is a great place to see a game and has the location advantages of being in the middle of town, but I still think some other amenities (bathrooms, concessions) are not quite where you would want them in an ideal setting. Not a knock on Nippert--they have added a significant amount as a result of the renovation, but without really blowing out some of the buildings immediately around, it's always going to face some limitations in that regard, just because it wasn't built with that in mind. The tradeoffs of having a cool old venue with great sight lines are that you can't squeeze in the same number of concessions or bathrooms per capita that you see at a stadium like GABP. Also, I am not a huge fan of bleacher-style seats, but I think that they are working okay so far.

Spur of the moment trip to Cincy?
NKU was founded in 1968 and didn't really begin in earnest on the current spot until around 1970-72, so all of the architecture is from then onward.

Spur of the moment trip to Cincy?
You can't go wrong with any of those. If you are looking for a slightly less expensive steak joint near your hotel, check out Jimmy G's, on Elm Street. If you want old school Italian with checker table cloths and the whole deal, walk up Vine Street towards OTR and eat at Scotti's. (It's only open from like 5-10 though.) (Boca is, in my experience, the best restaurant in town (and one of the top rated in the state) but it's pricier and more of a "special event' type of place.) If you haven't done it, you should check out the observation deck at Carew Tower while staying at the NP. Great views and it's like 4 bucks.

Very cool. Thanks!

STICKY: What do you want to see???
Not sure where this would go or if it should be a new subforum, but would love to see a place to discuss restoration/construction. A fair number of people on the forum have actually undertaken significant projects. I know there would be times that I would have liked to have a resource to ask a question (what kind of counter tops should I get? etc. etc.). Would be interesting to have that sort of option. (Maybe a single thread is all it really needs to be.) Heck, I managed to find an architect through UO!

Transformation in OKC
Great pics, Eurokie. I assume the Devon tower is the tallest one? That's a great looking building. I can't be all positive, though--"The Residences at 21C" makes me think of the SODASOPA episode of South Park! ;)

NCAA Men's Basketball: General News & Discussion
Villanova and Oklahoma were both ranked No. 1 at various points this season. Villanova spent several weeks at number 1. You are right--both were definitely high-quality and it's not that great of an upset to see them beat Oregon and Kansas.
