NCAA Men's Basketball: General News & Discussion
Not the first double-digit seed to make the Final Four. LSU was an 11-seed in 1986, and VCU went from the play-in game in Dayton a few years ago (as one of "two" 11 seeds) all the way to the Final Four. I think George Mason may have been a double-digit seed when it made the FF as well.

Ohio Census / Population Trends & Lists
That map really is interesting, KJP. I always think of the "booming South" and people moving in droves. Definitely the population in the south is increasing, but what's really happening is that Nashville, Atlanta, Charlotte, Raleigh, and basically all of Florida are growing. People aren't moving in droves to Mississippi or Alabama, and there are even non-metropolitan places in the Carolinas and Virginia that are suffering.

Cincinnati: Kroger
I don't know the most up-to-date statistics, but at least as of a couple years ago, Wal-Mart sold more groceries than anyone else in the U.S. Fairly certain that remains the case. Kroger may be the largest "traditional" grocer, but there are definitely bigger fish out there.

^Thanks very much, everyone! You should give a special hat tip to jjakucyk[/member] for all his excellent work on the project. He has been on top of it from day one and done a great job in making the finished product look great and respectful of the neighborhood, while also being absolutely livable. I can't tell you the number of people on the holiday tour who commented about how they could picture themselves living in the space, which is a very gratifying thing to hear.

Cincinnati: Over-the-Rhine: Development and News
^^ High Street, over on Reading near Liberty, has some cool stuff, and a vaguely similar vibe to what Joseph Williams Home had. It seems pricier though. And of course the Wooden Nickel is great, but I don't know that that is up your alley.

^Joseph Williams Home. It was a great store. (Also, you are confusing it with Williams Sonoma, I think...)

Cincinnati: Crime & Safety Discussion
YTD there were 66 homicides as of November 28, compared to 60 for the same time span last year. The homicide rate has unfortunately ticked up significantly in the last couple of months, it appears.

No--that staircase remains, but has been rebuilt. The spiral staircase basically replaced a very small staircase in the far left of the buildings, which is no longer there. The entrance to the attic on the 129 building now comes from the other end. Were you at the pre-construction open house? (Trying to figure out who you are....)

I like it. The Mita's space is great. Had dinner there (it's terrific BTW) and you felt like you were really engaged with the outside.

Cincinnati Bengals Discussion
After the last two weeks, the Texans and Cardinals losses look a lot more like very close losses to an improving team that has our number (Texans) and one of the five best teams in the league. This Sunday will tell a lot. With the schedule down the stretch, this game IMO will really determine if the Bengals have a shot at the number 1 seed. You would like to think that they can win at San Fran and beat the Ravens (without Flacco and many others) at home. If they beat the Steelers--who many pundits (like Peter King) are talking up as a top 5 team, just with some bad luck this year--then a 13-3 record looks like a real possibility. That Monday night game in Denver could have an amazing amount on the line. (And after some of the terrible games that ESPN has had for Monday Night Football, I bet they can't wait for that one to arrive.)

Suburban Sprawl News & Discussion
The Soviet Union did not because that would decrease social control. Japan didn't really have the room, and was under US rule initially anyway. Neither had the sort of population pressure the US had in its urban areas anyway. Seriously? In 1945, Japan had 72,000,000 people living in 146,000 square miles. That's a population density of 493 people per square mile. By 1950, it was 83,000,000 people, for a population density of 568 people per square mile. Today, it's 127 million people, with a density of 870 per square mile. In 1950, the United States had 151,000,000 people living in 3,800,000 square miles, for a density of 40 people per square mile. Today we are estimated at 322,000,000 with a density of 85 people per square mile. Pretty sure that Japan was experiencing population pressure like the US has never known, and won't know until we get to about 1.9 billion people (that's the US at 500 people per square mile).

Suburban Sprawl News & Discussion
As someone who is from an actual rural area, suburbs don't offer any more "privacy" or "elbow room" than cities do. Having a house 15 feet from your own house is not "privacy." Having the nearest neighbor 1/2 mile away? That's elbow room.

West Coast Roadtrip, Part 6: Santa Barbara and the California Coast
Great shots, Travis. I went to Santa Barbara quite a bit on business. Great place. If I lived in California, that would be my choice.

Cincinnati: Immigration Thread
^It's fascinating that the discussion makes it sound like ISIS is at some kind of high point right now. They've lost approximately 25% of the territory from their peak, most of those losses coming in the last 3-6 months. There are some interesting perspectives out there that say the reason they undertook the Paris attack was *because* they are losing ground in their boots-on-the-ground battles. I think there's a very real chance that, once ISIS is crushed as any kind of occupying, "real-world" force, they will double down on the terrorism approach. That's not to say that a coalition of countries should not be committed to rooting it out, and they should work together better. But that won't necessarily prevent situations like Paris from occurring.
