  1. Will Bill Cowher return to the NFL to coach Brady Quinn and the Cleveland Browns!?!?!? COACH CHIN PLOTTING HIS RETURN? A league source tells us that there is already talk in league circles that former Steelers coach Bill Cowher is planning his potential return to the NFL. Per the source, Cowher already has spoken with multiple teams about filling a potential vacancy in 2008. The teams, the source says, are believed to be the Browns, Redskins, and Panthers. Another league source confirms that Cowher has had at least one private discussion with Redskins owner Daniel Snyder about the possibility of replacing Hall of Famer Joe Gibbs, if Gibbs calls it quits after the 2007 season. 2. ah ok... I never made it to Seattle's concert series. I hope Seattle's can continue to thrive in their new location... especially now that Starbucks is in town. I remember a lot of my former co-workers were so excited about the new Starbucks (I moved away before it opened).
  3. Nice pics... I haven't there in like a year. Mad Mex is an excellent restaurant.
  4. I love Cleveland's early 20th century tudor apartment buildings, Corbo's bakery, Slavic Village's ethnic grocers and the Winking Lizard's cordon bleu sandwich.
  5. Cover charge? I never experienced that... Perhaps the lease is unfavorable... but I doubt they'll be able to duplicate that incredible atmosphere...

I'd rather have people driving too slow than too fast... people turn into such animals behind the wheel.
  7. quite distinctive!
  8. Is that new Seattle's location in addition to their present location downtown? I would hate it if they abandoned their current location... it's small and cramped... but has an incredible coffeehouse atmosphere
  9. Wow... what's up with the enclosed velodrome craze these days!? We're trying to build a velodrome here in Pittsburgh too... in the long-dead rivertown of Brownsville... about 35 miles to the southeast... it's touted as being an economic saviour for that depressed pocket of our region.
  10. I think somebody needs their medication.
  11. while the North Shore Connector is a nice flashy (useless) project for Pittsburgh... here's the real story on the state of Pittsburgh (and Pennsylvania) transit... the state government here has never generated the political will to fund its transit agencies adequately... and now every transit agency in the state is in a time of crisis... Pittsburgh and Philly are now enduring dramatic service reductions... and just about every smaller agency is reducing service and raising fares... this is a very dark time for Pennsylvania... I am embarrassed... while the rest of the country moves forward with transit at this critical time in history... PA takes a bold step backwards http://www.post-gazette.com/pg/07174/796574-147.stm Port Authority begs Legislature for help Capital fund tapped to balance budget Saturday, June 23, 2007 By Jonathan D. Silver, Pittsburgh Post-Gazette The Port Authority's board unanimously passed a 2007-08 operating budget yesterday that anticipates nothing but bad news for the riders of tomorrow. The $325 million budget incorporates a fall service cut coming on the heels of one that began this week. It includes a January fare increase for an undetermined amount. And it accounts for roughly 155 layoffs in addition to the 203 layoffs this month. MORE AT THE LINK ABOVE
  12. wow... looks awful... at least the scenery was nice on the way down!
  13. I'm not exactly sure where the creator of this "strange map" got his "strange numbers"... but Ohio DOES NOT have the 6th largest GDP in the U.S. Ohio ranks 7th. I mean c'mon... Ohio has about half the population of New York (which has the nation's largest and most econmically powerful city)... that's only slightly less ridiculous than ranking NEW JERSEY above New York... think about it! Here's the numbers from the Bureau of Economic Analysis http://bea.gov/newsreleases/regional/gdp_state/gsp_newsrelease.htm State GDP, 2006 California $1.727 Trillion Texas $1.065 Trillion New York $1.021 Trillion Florida $713.5 Billion Illinois $589.5 Billion Pennsylvania $510.2 Billion Ohio $461.3 Billion New Jersey $453.1 Billion Michigan $381.0 Billion Georgia $379.5 Billion North Carolina $374.5 Billion Virginia $369.2 Billion Massachusetts $337.5 Billion Washington $293.5 Billion Maryland $257.8 Billion Indiana $248.9 Billion Minnesota $244.5 Billion Tennessee $238.0 Billion Arizona $232.4 Billion Colorado $230.4 Billion Wisconsin $227.2 Billion Missouri $225.8 Billion Connecticut $204.1 Billion Louisiana $193.1 Billion Alabama $160.5 Billion Oregon $151.3 Billion South Carolina $149.2 Billion Kentucky $145.9 Billion Oklahoma $134.6 Billion Iowa $123.9 Billion Nevada $118.3 Billion Kansas $111.6 Billion Utah $97.7 Billion Arkansas $91.8 Billion District of Columbia $87.6 Billion Mississippi $84.2 Billion New Mexico $75.9 Billion Nebraska $75.7 Billion Delaware $60.3 Billion Hawaii $58.3 Billion New Hampshire $56.2 Billion West Virginia $55.6 Billion Idaho $49.9 Billion Maine $46.9 Billion Rhode Island $45.6 Billion Alaska $41.1 Billion Montana $32.3 Billion South Dakota $32.3 Billion Wyoming $29.5 Billion North Dakota $26.3 Billion Vermont $24.2 Billion and here's another happy little map on GDP growth rates Here's a list of world countries ranked by GDP in 2006... Ohio ranks closest to 17th ranked Belgium.... Australia would be more equivalent to Florida. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_countries_by_GDP_%28nominal%29

  18. http://pittsburgh.bizjournals.com/pittsburgh/stories/2007/06/18/daily21.html?surround=lfn Giant Eagle opening in west Columbus Pittsburgh Business Times - 2:26 PM EDT Wednesday, June 20, 2007 Giant Eagle Inc. is opening its 19th Central Ohio supermarket. The store, at 4780 W. Broad St. in west Columbus, is scheduled to open Thursday, the Pittsburgh-based grocery store operator said. The store will have an onsite GetGo gas station, the company's 15th in Columbus. The 53,000-square-foot supermarket will employ about 150. Giant Eagle said it had about $6.2 billion in sales last year. The company owns 157 supermarkets and franchises 69 in Pennsylvania, Ohio, West Virginia and Maryland. It has 120 GetGo gas stations.
  19. BD's is so awesome... but Tommy's is still my favorite restaurant on Coventry.
  20. All you have to do is click on the first link I posted to find out if your gut instinct is true... Pittsburgh $36,530 Cleveland $35,423 Cincinnati $34,961 Columbus $34,960 National $34,426 Akron $33,396 ... And the point you're trying to make by referencing Birmingham and Chicago is also false... just look at the Top 25 metros for income growth... and while there is an El Paso and a Charleston here and there... most of them are very large and/or very wealthy metros. Chicago has a per capita personal income only about 110% of the national average. Every metro within the BosWash corridor is significantly higher. Chicago is really quite similar to the rest of the Midwest when it comes to wages... it's just larger. Birmingham has a per capita personal income that is higher than every Ohio metro... but I guess it's hard to believe the largest city in Alabama could be that wealthy. But just like your perceptions about Pittsburgh are off the mark... so they are with Birmingham... which is one of the nation's largest financial centers. But this thread has nothing to do with Pittsburgh (or Chicago or Birmingham) other than using it as a regional benchmark... just like Louisville or Detroit... but you have proved your obsessive insecurity and ignorance about my city once again with your incoherent rantings. This thread is nothing more than Ohio-specific numbers pertaining to per capita personal income compiled by Biz Journals. There is no editorializing on my behalf. Why would someone from Pittsburgh... who lived in the north-central Pennsylvania hamlet of St. Marys seven years ago be interested in the economic performance of Ohio markets (I'm quite impressed with your detailed memory of the minutiae of my humble existence)? Well... I did live there for a brief time recently... and I currently reside about 35 miles from Ohio... a couple hundred miles closer than you do... regional economic development is kinda one of the main realms of my education... and Western PA and much of Ohio are interconnected socially and economically, have similar histories and will most likely depend on each other a great deal as they forge ahead into the post-industrial world. So please check your whiney delusional attitude at the door. Nobody from Pittsburgh or Cincinnati or St. Marys, PA is out to hurt you and your precious city. This thread is for the discussion of regional economic performance in Ohio... not your imaginary conflicts and cyber-donnybrooks.

In four more years, if all goes according to plan, Port Authority Transit will have two 2,400-foot-long tunnels snaking beneath the Allegheny River, carrying light rail passengers to the North Shore and back again. The staging areas for the $435-million project are concentrated on Stanwix Street, Downtown, and along General Robinson Street on the North Side, between PNC Park and Heinz Field.
