Cleveland: Top 5 most polluted
No, it's actually saying that winds from Ohio and West Virginia carry most fine particles away from Pittsburgh. We're cleaning up your mess- you're making it all by yourselves. ;) http://www.pittsburghlive.com/x/pittsburghtrib/s_328731.html "For both airborne particles and ozone, the region's main problem is upwind sources of pollution. About 84 percent of the airborne particles measured in Allegheny County between 2001 and '03 arrived from upwind sources, mainly coal-fired power plants, Westman said. Those same power plants contribute the nitrogen oxides that combine with volatile organic compounds to form ground-level ozone or smog. For the same three-year period, the ozone readings of air coming into the county already exceeded federal standards, Westman said." ... "upwind" means "Ohio"

Cleveland: Top 5 most polluted
According to Forbes... Pittsburgh has Ohio to blame for its air pollution! Damn you, Ohio!!!! ;) "The cities of Pittsburgh and New Castle count on the winds from Ohio and West Virginia to bear the majority of their fine particles."

Pittsburgh Overdose: South Oakland
Hot Metal Bridge is a dual-span bridge... the upstream component... which carries vehicular traffic... was built as a railroad bridge... the other span... under conversion to pedestrian access... carried crucibles of molten steel from the blast furnaces to the rolling mills

Songs about States, Cities, Places, etc.
from the latest Blue Nile record... lovely, delicate tune The Blue Nile - "Because of Toledo" Because of Toledo I got sober and stayed clean The pick ups in the wild prairies The shadows dancing in between Girl leans on the jukebox In a pair of old blue jeans Says I live here but I don't really live anywhere Because of Toledo Tuesday it's raining And I'm pulling on my shoes I guess I quit believing in The early morning news There's a boy orders coffee And he settles down to think How the women that you love sometimes Are the water that you drink Then another faded waitress dressed in pink Cries for Toledo The lipstick and the cocaine traces One face in a thousand faces I stumble through so many places 'Cause of Toledo Yeah Yeah yeah (oh)Yeah Yeah yeah Because of Toledo The highway looks so thin I see another motel sign Think of pulling in Write your name upon the mirror there The only secret that I know But I guess that I'd be only chasing rainbows Back to Toledo I think I'll go

Songs about States, Cities, Places, etc.
one of my favourite tunes by one of the great American songwriters of the past half-century... Randy Newman... certainly not a pleasant song... it can be rather offensive... so moderate away if necessary... Randy Newman - "Rednecks" Last night I saw Lester Maddox on a TV show With some smart-ass New York Jew And the Jew laughed at Lester Maddox And the audience laughed at Lester Maddox too Well, he may be a fool but he's our fool If they think they're better than him they're wrong So I went to the park and I took some paper along And that's where I made this song We talk real funny down here We drink too much and we laugh too loud We're too dumb to make it in no Northern town And we're keepin' the niggers down We got no-necked oilmen from Texas And good ol' boys from Tennessee And colleges men from LSU Went in dumb - come out dumb too Hustlin' 'round Atlanta in their alligator shoes Gettin' drunk every weekend at the barbecues And they're keepin' the niggers down CHORUS We're rednecks, rednecks And we don't know our ass from a hole in the ground We're rednecks, we're rednecks And we're keeping the niggers down Now your northern nigger's a Negro You see he's got his dignity Down here we're too ignorant to realize That the North has set the nigger free Yes he's free to be put in a cage In Harlem in New York City And he's free to be put in a cage in the South-Side of Chicago And the West-Side And he's free to be put in a cage in Hough in Cleveland And he's free to be put in a cage in East St. Louis And he's free to be put in a cage in Fillmore in San Francisco And he's free to be put in a cage in Roxbury in Boston They're gatherin' 'em up from miles around Keepin' the niggers down CHORUS

Pittsburgh Overdose: South Side
No... neither go inside of a hamburger... kraut goes inside a dog... and fries (along with cole slaw) go inside a Primanti's sandwich... which usually consists of pastrami or corned beef or genoa salami or sardines or a bunch of other things... but not hamburger. The Primanti's tradition is certainly no weirder than Cincinnati Chili. Northeast Ohioans are quite familiar with the Primanti's sandwich... as regional chain Panini's borrowed the idea for their "overstuffed sandwiches". The Primanti sandwich:

Pittsburgh Overdose: South Side
South Side is probably the city's most exciting neighborhood... located on the south side of the Monongahela River with quick access to Oakland and Downtown. It features a thriving business district of almost 20 blocks. After crossing the Hot Metal Bridge from Oakland... my first destination was the South Side Works... which is a brownfield redevelopment of a former steel mill site. It is a mixed-use development featuring retail, office, residential. While it is generally in the template of the "lifestyle center" that is taking the country by storm... I like it because SSW is actually integrated within an urban neighborhood as opposed to being in the middle of nowhere... and I think the architecture is generally of high quality and fits in with the context of the neighborhood. It certainly has brought the eastern end of E. Carson St. to life. a young lady enjoying wine and tapas in the sun the cheesy architecture of the Cheesecake Factory contrasts with the retro-deco of the movie theatre tucked away in the middle of the residential area... yum! typical South Side housing example of some of the newer construction alley housing an old gas station was converted to a restaurant with generous al fresco dining a couple months ago an old catholic school goes condo what the??? work beginning on Riverside Mews... a 48 townhome project near the river South Side Court an old glass factory goes residential what a strange house there is significant commercial scattered throughout the side streets of the South Side... which is a quality I really like this handsome building has just been restored Polish school walking across the rooftops the church on the hill found new life as condos! an opportunity for one of you urban pioneers new apartment building City Theatre 10th St. Bridge ciao, South Side

Pittsburgh Overdose: South Oakland
yeah... I know you guys are getting sick of the daily Pittsburgh photo threads... but I just don't care... This thread is mostly South/Central Oakland... near the University of Pittsburgh... largely inhabited by undergraduates... though more "townie" as you get further from the campus... nothing comprehensive... just me rambling around but first... the view from the front window of my apartment in Bloomfield... what a convenient place to live... right across the street from Starbucks, W.G. Grinders, Paddy Cake Bakery, etc. the view from the back of my apartment... towards the Cathedral of Learning in Oakland just a little bit of the western edge of Shadyside Central Catholic High School... Danny Marino's alma mater my favourite temple in the city I believe this is the "Cloud Factory" of "Mysteries of Pittsburgh" fame the "Lost Neighborhood" Oakland has an extremely eclectic collection of rows entering Dan Marino's neighbourhood what an awkward structure new houses in Oakland secret overlook... looking down at the Hot Metal Bridge crossing the Monongahela River connecting Oakland to the South Side... houses cling to the South Side Slopes... an area featured in the New York Times last year... American Eagle's new HQ is the big red building to the right looking west towards Downtown... in the foreground is the Technology Park... a brownfield redevelopment of a former steel mill site... unfortunately it's very suburban in appearance right now... but there are plans to significantly increase the density in the near future looking up the Monongahela River... Hays Woods is an undeveloped forested area of 600 acres... just minutes from Downtown... apparently others have enjoyed this view before me work is progressing on the pedestrian portion of the Hot Metal Bridge... to the right is the South Side Works... another brownfield redevelopment of a steel mill site... it's a mixed-use complex featuring diverse retail, dining, office, residential and plenty of structured parking... the next phases include more office and residential... a 15-story hotel and a Hofbrauhaus the eastern edge of the South Side... and houses "in the cut" Oakland hillside housing Oakland density really going out of the way now descending into the forest at the intersection of Frazier St. and Romeo St. some bonus Downtown Downtown's skinny buildings are popular for loft conversions crossing the Allegheny

Ohio MSAs ranked by Total Personal Income
I have to admit... I was suprised to see that Cleveland's MSA has a higher Per Capita Personal Income than Metro Cincy. Especially since Cleveland's Economic Area PCPI was so low... I guess it was really dragged down by the inclusion of Canton and Youngstown.

Low-fat Goetta?
So I have to admit... the thing I miss most about living in Ohio is the GOETTA! Even though goetta did not exist in Wooster... I had a co-worker from Cincy (Sharonville) who would bring me back a cylinder of Glier's Goetta everytime she went home. So I had a hankering for that Cincinnati delicacy... and was looking to order some online... http://www.cincinnatifavorites.com/gliers.php I can get 6 1 lb. rolls for about $30 bucks... I live alone... so that will take awhile to eat... I assume I can just store goetta in the freezer? I saw Low-Fat Goetta and was intrigued... "Low Fat Goetta has just 2.5 grams of fat and only 8 total carbs, all while maintaining the classic Goetta taste!" Has anybody tried it... does it really retain all that classic Goetta taste? I'd like to eat healthier... but I don't want my goetta to taste like bland crap... if low-fat goetta tastes 90% as good as regular goetta... I might try it...
