  1. Scenes from my approx. 25-30 min. walk to school (Bloomfield to University of Pittsburgh) ... sometimes I bike or take the bus my home (at right) looking down Liberty Ave. in Bloomfield starting towards school... the Cathedral of Learning looms in the distance typical Bloomfield housing crossing the bridge on Millvale Ave. looking down at the East Busway Baum-Centre corridor the western edge of Shadyside I apologize for the pinkness of the next few photos... my photos tend to turn out pink during precipitation events... just pretend they're supposed to be artistic new condos u/c now we're entering Oakland... a branch of the Rand Corp. in the distance St. Paul's Craig St. Carnegie-Mellon University The Carnegie The Cathedral of Learning Heinz Chapel and finally i arrive at the 1970s abomination that houses my department

  11. Actually, you don't... OSU and PSU basically trade off every year (home team almost always wins)... we've lost to Michigan like 7 times in a row (many of them aided by blatently biased officiated... such as the phantom extra second at the end of the game last year that ruined PSU's perfect season). We hate Michigan too... but we really hate OSU due to proximity (and perhaps the Big 33 Game) and the fact that their program is pretty much the anti-PSU when it comes to graduation rates and ethics (like the whole Maurice Clarett scandal). And now that I live in Ohio... I hate OSU all the more! Interestly, when I was at BW3's in Wooster watching the PSU-Michigan game last year... OSU partisans erupted with cheers when Michigan won... which shocked me... I guess OSU fans were still bitter about the bruising defeat PSU handed them the week before.
  12. Dough...nuts? I said no ethnic food! I would do anything for a Tim Horton's in Wooster.... honey crueller... ahhhh... I don't believe Corbo's has doughnuts? But they do have superb cannoli

"new convention centre" has been the silver bullet solution packaged for nearly every struggling city large and small over the last couple years...
  14. Cleveland was at the epicenter of the last recession. It's nice to see it's recovering well from that time. The amount of bad press/negative views Cleveland gets, it's amazing that $4.5 billion gets spent there. But Cleveland also had the most incredible PR campaign ever in the 90s... with the whole "Cleveland Rocks" thing and the Rock N Roll Hall of Fame and the Flats (which everyone outside of Cleveland still thinks exists) and Drew Carrey. At least from my experience... Cleveland had a rather positive perception amongst the general population (much more so than Pittsburgh or Cincinnati). And though Columbus is now approaching Cleveland's metro in population... Cleveland has always been perceived as offering more of a "big-city" experience with its theaters, museums and other attractions... which is why I'm suprised it doesn't compete with Columbus concerning tourist dollars.
  15. Agreed. It really is all about "marketing" and "perception". Does anybody think about German Village when they think of Columbus? Does anybody realize a fascinating historic neighborhood like that exists in Columbus (Georgia or Ohio?)... No.... they think it's "plain" and "boring" and lacking anything of historic interest... like Indianapolis. While there are similarities between C-bus and Indy (interstate loop, same city AND metro population, state capital located in exact center of the state, etc), the core urban built environments couldn't be more different.
  16. Ridgway, PA (pop. 4,591) Brookville, PA (pop. 4,230) Bellefonte, PA (pop. 6,395) St. Marys, PA (pop. 14,502) Clearfield, PA (pop. 6,631) Tyrone, PA (pop. 5,528) Hollidaysburg, PA (pop. 5,368) Lewistown, PA (pop. 8,998) Lock Haven, PA (pop. 9,149) Johnsonburg, PA (pop. 3,003) Emporium, PA (pop. 2,526)
  17. and Columbus has the German Village which blows away the entire state of Florida. I'm suprised Columbus is a bigger tourism draw than Cleveland... (though I would rather visit Columbus myself)... I would assume much of that is do to OSU and Easton.

Excellent points. I hope ColDayMan thinks long and hard about what you said. Anyways... great news for Cincy. I will feel much safer when I visit knowing that its "dangerous" quotient is reduced by this unexpected surge in population. I wonder why Cleveland doesn't challenge the Census Estimate?

ColDayMan is the coolest! Prince had a home in Dayton? Whoa.
  22. Beautiful photos, MayDay. The skyline shot with the cranes is the most impressive angle of Cleveland's skyline I've ever seen. And I LOVE Orthodox churches.
