  1. Allegheny West is one of Pittsburgh's most architecturally rich neighborhoods. It's located on the north side... not far from the Ohio River... in the former city of Allegheny. It's gorgeous 19th century rowhouses were home to many of Pittsburgh's leading industrialists and businessmen. Suburbanization and post-WW2 urban renewal decimated much of the neighborhood. Many precious architectural treasures were lost as freeways were blasted through, gas stations replaced historic homes and neighborhoods were evacuated and left to decay. Luckily, remnants of this neighborhood remain in remarkable condition. Beautiful structures on Western Avenue have recently been converted to commercial use... with ethnic restaurants, unique shops and martini bars sprouting up. A segment of the population, recognizing the remarkable urban fabric of this area, has restored and preserved this fantastic area. first... a few skyline shots... from Uniondale Cemetary: Heinz Field sat idle as the Steelers crushed the Denver Broncos in the AFC Championship: from the West End Bridge: WELCOME TO THE NORTH SIDE go here for Ukrainian food True: a renowned martini bar these buildings are part of the Community College of Allegheny County This church was designed by H.H. 2. Hooray for the Steelers!
  3. 4. It was 40 years of suckage.
  5. a Broncos helmet avatar? At least show some support for your AFC North friends! Let's bring a championship back to the AFC North! Go AFC North!
  6. YES! Way to go Steelers! No one gave us a chance! On to Denver!
  7. Also, I don't think you want to cause a tiff with a fellow Porcupine Tree fanatic, moonloop.
  8. oh shut the hell up, moonloop... the last thing i want to see if for Carson Palmer to suffer a potentially "career-ending" injury... he may be a Bengal... but he is one of the NFL's brightest young stars... I consider him to the 3rd best QB in football at the moment... it would be a devastating loss for the sport of football to lose a player like Carson. In addition, I have never had any hatred for the Bengals and am glad to see a winning club in Cincy after all these years.
  9. Do you have a link to that story, unusualfire?

  11. http://www.post-gazette.com/pg/06011/635718.stm Penguins taking delegation to see Columbus' Arena District development Wednesday, January 11, 2006 By Mark Belko, Pittsburgh Post-Gazette COLUMBUS, Ohio -- Joe Casey remembers a time not long ago when the thought of bar-hopping in the downtown area of this city wasn't even an option. "There was no such thing as going downtown and drinking and eating," he said from behind the bar at O'Shaughnessy's Public House. "You never heard anybody say, 'Hey, let's go downtown and get a beer,' because there was nothing there." 12. So proximity to New York City is why Columbus sprawls north? interesting...
  13. I do. and so do these people... Steelers fans on Kilimanjaro
  14. It wasn't a cheap shot... Von Oelhoffen was blocked into Carson by Erie Steinbach... he was falling as he contacted Carson's knee. As a Steeler fan, I was horrified... Carson is one of the game's brightest young stars... and I hate to see him suffer such a severe injury. I hope his rehab goes well and he can return better than ever. Great game, Bengals... Kitna played pretty well until the end... It was thrilling and intense. The Bengals will be back.

I'm in the upper right-hand corner... next to ColDayMan (and behind WheelingMan)
  16. This is really sad... Weirton's practically metro Pittsburgh to me... so I'm pulling hard for this area to rebound. It really is a great area with wonderful assets... it's just been forgotten by everyone.
  17. I got my BS in Geography (GIS) from Penn State. I got my first "professional" job in Wooster, OH. I make vector maps from orthophotos.
  18. i was quite impressed with Findlay
  19. I'll take my Wooster Gentleman's mag, thank you. Nice Iron Maiden avatar, Maximillian.
  20. Even if I wasn't a PA native... there is a region of Ohio that is solid Steelers territory... Youngstown through E. Liverpool through Steubenville, St. Clairsville, etc. Even where I live in Wooster... I have met/seen/encountered many Steelers fans... I see Steelers fans all over the place in Canton... I wore a Steelers jersey in the heart of Cleveland a couple months ago and got tons of positive responses (and no heckling whatsoever).
  21. Nice loss there, Bungles. I'm looking forward to watching the Steelers knock you out of the playoffs.

bah, after walking through Columbus' German Village in freshly fallen snow tonight... there's no way I'll ever give up winters!
  24. In the Big 10... we hate OSU the most... Michigan would be a close 2nd. We hate OSU because they are seen as the antithesis of PSU... brash, cocky, arrogant, low graduation rate.... and they're always good. Michigan is also hated because they keep beating us. Penn Staters really don't have much animosity for the rest of the league... it's kind of hard to get excited about distant places like Minnesota and Northwestern. Penn State had a lot of awesome rivalries in the pre- Big 10 days... which have unfortunately been lost. Pitt has always been our biggest rival... but due to Penn State's stupidity... that series is on hold indefinately.
