This is from 1949, on W Broad looking east towards High St. The Camel billboard is blowing smoke rings.

Broad and High, 1984. The NW corner was still a parking lot, High St was 6 lanes and Broad 8 lanes! Do we even have that level of pedestrian traffic today?
  3. 4 out of the last 5 new hires in our company are OSU grads from NE Ohio. They're deciding to stay in Columbus because they were able to find a job here and their friends are staying here too. Anecdotal, of course.

1938 - West Broad looking west from the Scioto River. The building with the billboard is the lawn of the veterans museum today. You can just make out the railroad station building at Starling and Broad.
  6. This is the ramp from 70/71 westbound to 71 southbound. I'm guessing it's this tall to get over the railroad. The mainline does go underneath Front St.
  7. The bollards are probably a Homeland Security requirement for Federal Courthouses.
  8. I might be in the minority, but I’m beginning to hate this flyover bridge. It’s an aesthetic mess. The bottom of the bridge is taller than the Main St. bridge arch. It will block views for eastbound motorists on 70 into downtown (the Mound St bridge only partially blocked views - it didn’t cross the river). At River and Rich, traffic will be very visible above the flood wall. You’ll be able to watch semis driving by walking along the Scioto Mile. The top of a semi might be 16’ above the steel depending on how thick the bridge deck is. I’m not against freeways (I do like the wider bridges and/or caps) but this seems ridiculous.
  9. I was in Atlanta a week ago or so and special event parking next to the State Farm Arena was $70. I have no issues with the SN parking rates. If you want to save a buck, park further and walk and get in a little exercise....
  10. Just a rough sketch, the perspective is a bit off, but a 15 story building here will be very prominent (until the next one is built)!
  11. That westbound 70 to southbound 71 flyover bridge is going to cut off views to the skyline.
  12. You had me with Suburban charm, but upscale amenities too?!?
  13. Lot less foundation work for a two story building....
  14. Steiner also developed the Green in Dayton with a residential component. They have since sold the property.
  15. Well, the CAC did pass the Weber & High project so you never know.
  16. The northern portion of the site (the parking lot) is in Clintonville - maybe it could be combined with the lot to the north and become a nice development?
  17. The University Area Commission Zoning Committee is hearing the following projects on Monday March 4: White Castle/Patrick J's site - Same project, looks like there might be a few tweaks. Tuttle Park Pool (pool reconstruction) parking variance. The Summit Methodist Church site. 1479 N. High - the Bier Stube site. Nice to see the Bier Stube and Patrick J's projects are still alive! https://universityarea.org/2024/02/march-2024-zoning-committee-agenda/
  18. In the University Area Commission Zoning Committee agenda, there's a packet for a reconstruction of the Tuttle Park Pool. It' a parking variance - looks like some of the new parking will be located on the site of the current sanitary sewer tunnel project site just to the north of the pool. https://universityarea.org/wp-content/uploads/2024/02/Tuttle-Variance-Application-Complied_02.14.2024.pdf
  19. The apartments are all one big building. They share a podium. If anything, the old apartments across Thurber Dr should be redeveloped. They're 60's and 70's suburban style apartments. If you meant the Buttles side - I agree that they should've mimicked the older houses.
  20. ^It's right across the street from Brad DeHays' modular home factory - maybe they can work out a deal. I always thought it was weird that this store was set so far back from the street.
  21. I agree whole heartedly. I've been trying to articulate the same idea and explain why so many people hate 5 over 1 buildings. I think this illustration from Strong Towns sums it up nicely.
  22. In defense of the funeral home parking lot - I recently took by elderly in-laws to a funeral there - the parking was necessary as they cannot walk that far anymore. They also use it for staging of funeral processions. I do agree that pay lots should be taxed in a way that encourages development.
  23. Moving big things is fascinating. Here's a load 3xs the weight of Intel's
