  1. Maybe we should start a Powell thread to keep track of all the Sawmill Parkway strip malls?
  2. For every one of these ^ there are 10 or more strip malls: https://www.bizjournals.com/columbus/news/2024/02/16/new-target-anchored-retail-center-city-of-powell.html
  3. Isn't that how rail works in Spain? Private operators competing with the State using the same rail lines and stations?
  4. The best part of Metro Center are these awful late 70s, early 80's office buildings that have tilted facades. They accentuate views of the vast parking lot as you approach the building and, at certain times of the year, the angle focuses sunlight onto the lawn scorching the grass.
  5. That road was initially designed to accommodate the arts festival and school groups. Since then the festival has moved around a bit. I imagine it acts as a fire lane as well.
  6. ^ Is there a building behind all those wires?
  7. COTA CEO Joanna Pinkerton is stepping down. https://www.bizjournals.com/columbus/news/2024/02/12/cota-ceo-joanna-pinkerton-is-stepping-down.html
  8. You're joking, right? Pizzuti has done a lot in the City, from Miranova to the Joseph Hotel in the SN. https://www.pizzuti.com/projects

It was the Columbus Department of Health. When the Dept. moved to Parsons and Main the building was demolished.

^Here’s a similar photo without the glare. It’s a Dispatch photo from the summer of 1986.
  11. Or it could be the former DPL Killen power station east of Manchester. So many former power plants along the Ohio...
  12. I'm a sucker for Scandinavian architecture.
  13. I like the preliminary design. The broad overhang is reminiscent of the Copenhagen Opera House. Both Copenhagen and Oslo have large public spaces facing water - could happen here too (albeit a smaller body of water!). Both are significant public buildings.
  14. Nope, it was the same team that did the View on Grant, View on 5th and View on Pavey Square. The name escapes me
  15. I think the elevator ended up where it is on both Edwards' 15 story towers is because of the parking garage layout. Downtown developers, including Edwards, feel they need to provide parking in order to rent the units. Hopefully at some point there's enough momentum downtown that every unit does not need 1 or 2 parking spaces per unit, or there's a common garage hidden behind buildings that provide units for several residential buildings. I wonder where the developers of the Continental tower at Gay and 4th are providing parking? A good example would be the dead residential project on E Long in front of the garage at Long and Pearl. Seems like this should be resurrected....
  16. I'm sensing hostility towards French Second Empire mansard roofs...
  17. I think what most people dislike about 5 over 1's is the monolithic feel of the building. The Nicholas across the street tried to break up the façade but it still looks monolithic because the floor plates align and the building height is basically the same. The White-Hanes side of the block has varying heights, varying building widths and floor plates that do not align which I think creates a more human scaled street wall. I sketched the lines below. These buildings were built by different builders over time. I think the modern 15 story will fit in nicely.
  18. What a wonderful photo! You'll need to retake this when the 15 story is finished.
  19. Hate to be “that guy” but those two buildings are clad in limestone.
  20. There's an airbnb on my block that charges $600/night - that works out to $18,000/month.
  21. That's actually screening for a cell tower.
  22. ^ Stereo Quad Suzy Waud! I listened to WWCD for most of it's 33 year run. In 1990 it was a breath of fresh air to Columbus' boring radio market.
  23. I'm guessing they are using the decommissioned J.M Stuart power plant site just west of Manchester as a staging area to unload barges on the Ohio River. They'll have to set up cranes to unload barges and load semis. My recollection is that they are transporting the lithography machines that print chips.
  24. The entire north side of downtown was industrial historically due to the railroads. It's only changed in the last 2 decades.
