That's shoring work prior to foundations. The I-beams are driven into the ground. As soil is excavated, the thick lumber is placed between the beams to hold back the soil in the unexcavated area. There's probably digging for a parking garage.

I think Oakland Nursery has good quality plant materials. Why a Silver Maple? They're messy, weak wooded trees. They do grow fast. You might consider a Tulip Poplar. The trees that were cut down were Zelkovas and were 20-25' tall. Street trees along commercial corridors should be 2-1/2" to 3" caliper - not saplings. Saplings will be damaged by vandals, cars running them over trying to park, and snow pushed by snow plows. 3" is ideal in my opinion. These trees vary in height from 12' to 18' depending on species. The installed cost is somewhere between $750 to $1,000 per tree. The problem is the space between the curb and the sidewalk. A 3" caliper tree has a minimum root ball diameter of 32". There needs to be enough space for the root ball. This is from my experience of being in the biz...

State Auto had a plan approved to build a garage, but that was pre-covid. With so many work from home employees, the parking lots look even worse empty. Definitely could be redeveloped if there was a desire by State Auto - like Encova across the street. The CSCC lot bounded by Cleveland, Spring, Long and Washington was the Borden Dairy for years. 1975 looking south. That's Spring St along the bottom of the photo. Lots of parking....

I love that building - Columbus' first skyscraper designed by Daniel Burnham. Opened in 1898! The bay windows would look great in an apartment.

Perhaps, but my biggest beef is about single developer, large scale projects. There are inherent cost savings strategies in projects like these that lead to homogenous built environments. There are also Dublin imposed design standards that enhance this with required materials and building heights. If there were less building material standards, smaller lot sizes, different developers and architects, differing building heights the entire project would more successful in my mind.

It's just copying what was successful in the Short North and Downtown without, you know, the inconveniences. I went to an event at Pins and the parking was close. My overall impression was that it's boring and sanitized.

I remember when the LeVeque tower was cleaned too. I'll bet most of that is from soot from coal fired furnaces that were prevalent in the 1800s and early 1900s.

I would imagine the 6th Ave. frontage might have been a concern too. That's a parking lot with units above. They could have wrapped the north edge of the parking lot with townhomes that have porches facing the street.

Here’s a shot I took a last week looking north from Buttles. Parkside was just beginning to peek over the Graduate.

I like the massing of Parkside on Pearl. It fills the space nicely. I'm looking forward to more infill just off of High - like the proposed building on W. Hubbard.
