  1. After watching the linked video from Intel, Groveport makes sense now. Cargo planes will fly in the pieces-parts of the equipment to Rickenbacker. There it will be transferred onto trucks to take it to the site. Once assembled, the equipment will be 500 tons and 23' tall.
  2. It seems the reporter of the original article was a bit confused. There's no way a 500 ton object 23' tall could be moved over rural roads without damaging every road. That seems more like the finished piece of equipment and Intel's description of transporting it in pieces is more realistic. If it's coming from the Netherlands it makes more sense for a freighter to sail to Cleveland (like the gas turbine generator for OSU) rather than transferring it to a barge and floating it up the Mississippi and Ohio Rivers. Are there even ports on the Ohio R. that can transfer this type of cargo onto trucks?

South High St. looking north from Main in the early 1960s. Note the electric busses. Today it’s a parking lot where Schiff is proposing an 18 story building. The Swan Cleaner on the right is the location of Crawford-Hoying’s new building.
  4. That's how the power plant at OSU is being built - equipment first and then the building.
  5. UA is looking for the tax revenue office brings. As a predominantly bedroom community with a lot of roadways and other infrastructure to maintain they need the cash.
  6. I didn't get a pic, but there's a tower crane base at the Rambler site on E. 7th.
  7. The traffic increase is certainly dramatic but not crippling. Per MORPC, Hudson between Summit and Indianola gets about 26K cars per day and it’s handled by 4 narrow lanes. High St at Broadway gets about 21K and Broadway west of High gets about 16K - so roughly 37K cars through that intersection per day? Seems very doable out in the country with new, over-engineered roads.
  8. We could've had subway nearing it's 50 year birthday? Imagine how different the city would look today.
  9. I don't know about this specific project, but my understanding is that structural and geotechnical engineers calculate the settlement of a building as it is constructed so that it sinks to the correct elevation. We're talking fractions of an inch here.
  10. I can't get past the Dispatch pay wall and the Franklin Co. Engineer doesn't have a lot of info but it looks like the Hayden Run bridge will see improvements this year:
  11. I don't know, when I first went to OSU, Drake was heavily used as a 2nd student union. The Towers had twice the residents then - 16 students per suite. You had to go somewhere to get away from your roommates! I didn't live in the towers but it was nice to sit in Drake and study with a view of the river. I think Drake started to go downhill when the number of students was halved at the towers. It never was an architectural showpiece (neither are the towers) but it served it's purpose.
  12. Better not touch that historic parking lot at 4th & Thurman
  13. The permit might be forthcoming - or they got a foundation start permit allowing underground work to commence while the rest is in review.

  15. I like the OEA building! It's a nice mid-century modern building the ties in nicely with Chase, Key Bank and the Renaissance. Too bad the Christopher Inn is gone.
  16. ^I watched the Hilton construction cam regularly - crews poured two floors above the rooftop bar for what I assume to be mechanical space and elevator equipment. It's hidden by the crown. So I guess it's 30 stories tall but only 28 are open to the public. I imagine the Merchant Bldg will have something similar.
  17. Carmentonville this morning with power plant construction in the background.
  18. One of the options being explored for the Livingston Ave improvements (18th to Nelson) include separated, raised bike lanes. https://www.columbus.gov/LivingstonAvenuePedestrianSafetyStudy/ Click on the "Public Meeting Materials" link to see more.
  19. Once the foundation drilling is complete we should see a tower crane.
  20. Dammit - this pisses me off. The retailer wants clear visibility of their signage. The trees were Zelkovas - not native but not invasive. The City owns these trees - were they cut down illegally? The original site compliance plan shows the trees remaining in place.
  21. The advanced pedestrian signals are a good thing. I noticed the newly installed signal at 15th and High on Campus has this feature. Motorists need to get used to is, especially those who watch the cross street signal and use it like a drag strip christmas tree. (I'm talking about you, Pablo!)
  22. Sounds like he's been reading Strong Towns. Plus, he swore in the article 😳
