Cleveland Ave in Downtown Linden (sometimes referred to as Linden Heights) in 1945. The view is looking north along Cleveland Ave at Myrtle Ave. Most of the buildings still stand. I’ll bet a lot of the businesses took a hit with the construction of Northern Lights in the 1950s. The wires above are for trolley busses. The bones are still there for a resurgence - hope the City plans for the area are successful! The photo is from the library’s historic photo archive.

The more I look at it the more I like the 150 N 3rd project. Maybe it's the colors - unique to downtown. There are monumental steps off of 3rd leading to a rooftop outdoor amenity space above parking. Hopefully the Budget site will be redeveloped but I'm afraid the site might be too small for the types of development we're seeing these days. Maybe something can work if the developer opts not to incorporate parking (not a requirement downtown). There are plenty of parking lots nearby that can be developed more easily. I'm hoping 3rd will be transformed in the next 5-10 years!

^If BRT is completely lane separated, I suppose it could be upgraded to rail if necessary in the future. If implemented, I think this will encourage denser redevelopment within the corridor creating greater demand for transit.

The thinking is BRT is more likely to be funded by the feds. I wonder if they need to reevaluate this in light of the new administration...

^Seems like other areas of town could use grassroots pro-development, pro-density groups.

South Campus, 1960. A trolley bus on High St., looking south from 11th. The only thing remaining in this photo is an apartment building at 9th and High partially hidden by the tree in the middle of the photo. Shops on High served the neighborhood, full of families at the time. A friend of mine grew up here and worked in the menswear shop on the corner in the late 70s. That’s where the Barnes and Noble is now.

The peninsula has plenty of room to maneuver for the first buildings. As it gets built out space will tighten up and you'll see a few tower cranes. Tower crane rental for a 6 story building is about $50K a month.

^^I like it. It would be cool to have a unit facing the park. Nice view and the Moxy will block a lot of High St noise. Close to, but not on High.

670 under construction in 1958. Known as the Goodale Expressway the view is from Park St looking east towards the High St bridge. The white building is gone now but the others remain.

The site is fenced off and the right southbound lane of Neil Ave is closed. I’ll bet demo starts soon.

Moving right along. 15th Ave. appears to be open to westbound traffic.

I didn’t get a photo (it was too dark), but the next building is underway at the southeast corner of 15th and High. Looked like the steel was up to the 3rd level.

A Dollar Tree store is being tacked onto the Aldi.

Interesting drone footage of Franklinton and the Arena District shot last summer. Although the video is train focused, there are interesting vantage points of recently completed projects and ongoing construction.

That looks like an early 1970s Ford Ranchero! OK, back on topic: The Hilton is starting to make its presence known. I heard steel will begin in late February/early March.

Yes, looking northeast. I think it was taken from the top of the Beacon Building which used to stand at the northeast corner of W Long and Marconi. Surprisingly, the two buildings framing the view are still there.

^It probably has more to do with how tight the site is and the need to reach all corners of a long building.

Nice! I think I commented some time ago that the parking lot to the north of Harrison was ripe for development. Nice that the old tower is coming down. The Lane Ave. frontage is a mess. The north side of Lane from Neil to High is next. There are a lot of crappy apartment buildings reaching the end of their usefulness.

That connection is a pipe dream of mine too. There have been feasibility studies for a vehicular connection but it would be cost prohibitive. Any north/south connection would need to tunnel under the railroad and 670 and there doesn't appear to be enough run to get a road under there. Another issue is the 670 bridge piers are parallel with the tracks. A surface road would need to zigzag around the piers. That's just not possible with today's roadway standards. Now, 100 years ago it could have been built and we would have had a road with a very interesting character. You could put in an at grade crossing east of 670 ending in a T intersection with a new east/west road on the north side of the tracks. I don't think anyone wants to, or is permitted to put in several at grade crossings.

Notice the crane in the background in the middle of the pic? That used to be located at 14th and Pearl but a week or two ago it was disassembled and relocated the the tower crane base at 15th and Pearl.

^A lot of buildings have the crane located within the footprint. It's a long building and tower cranes only have so much reach.
