Columbus: Short North Developments and News
Pablo replied to buildingcincinnati's post in a topic in Central & Southeast Ohio Projects & ConstructionI commute on High St through the Short North and have noticed these two completely empty buildings. I find this somewhat surprising. I'm guessing the owners are holding out for high rent tenants. Does anyone know the status of these buildings? This first is at Poplar and High. There are two parcels here with two different owners. I believe the last business to move out was Blick. The apartments seem empty too. The rear portion of the building is fenced off. I wonder if the building is going to be renovated. The former dry cleaners had a proposed tenant a number of years ago but I haven't heard anything in quite some time. There are for lease signs on both properties - hopefully they will be filled soon. The other is at Starr and High. About 20-25 years ago this building was renovated to provide affordable housing but now it's completely empty. Recently it used to house Flower Child (moved to E. 5th), Roy G. Biv (moved to River & Rich) and Vamp (moved next door to the White Castle building). The apartments above appear empty as well. I haven't seen any For Lease sings. The "L" shaped lot extends back to the alley. Hopefully the owner is not thinking of tearing down the building. I would think with minimal updates the apartments would rent pretty quickly.

^I read somewhere that Columbus is the largest city without a downtown Whole Foods. Indy has a nice one.

Pablo replied to buildingcincinnati's post in a topic in Central & Southeast Ohio Projects & ConstructionThe plan uses a good portion of Rhodes Park - that's a bad move. The last thing Columbus should do is use parkland for development. https://radio.wosu.org/post/columbus-loses-points-quality-public-parks#stream/0

Pablo replied to buildingcincinnati's post in a topic in Central & Southeast Ohio Projects & ConstructionYes, that's true. Franklinton was incorporated around 1797. It was annexed by Columbus in 1859. The comment made me smile because of its brashness. The comment also expressed the real fears gentrification by locals.

Pablo replied to buildingcincinnati's post in a topic in Central & Southeast Ohio Projects & Construction^A couple of weeks ago a friend was in the UDF on W Broad in Franklinton. He mentioned Franklinton and someone yelled at him "This ain't Franklinton motherf**ker, this here is the Bottoms!" ? I wouldn't say Franklinton is "in the bag" - it has a long way to go.

Pablo replied to buildingcincinnati's post in a topic in Central & Southeast Ohio Projects & Construction^Those steel beams are part of the shoring system. They are being driven into the ground to allow for excavation of what I assume is a below grade parking garage. Should start to see dirt moving in a few weeks.

I don't think the Dispatch property project will be a significant tower. https://www.dispatch.com/business/20200113/construction-projects-poised-to-transform-central-ohio-this-year

Drove by yesterday. Foundations and retaining walls are going in. There’s an existing hotel just north of this site. Can there be any more wires?

I seem to recall a one story brick building just south of the asphalt. Maybe an HVAC contractor? I think it was removed when the railroad bridges were demolished. That's why the parking lot is above Neil - it was all tracks. I outlined it in red below. That's Goodale St and Park at the top. 670 wiped out a lot of houses!

Grandview Heights: Developments and News
The thing that bugged me about the article are the references to taller new-builds. There's a photo of the building at 3rd and Grandview. Those are all within the City of Columbus. Grandveiw Hgts begins at the first alley south of 3rd (for the most part). There's room on the Columbus portion of Grandview Ave for increase density for sure.
