I attended the commission meeting last night. The developer gave a presentation and the commission and public commented. No vote was taken since it was a conceptual review. Of the 25 or so members of the public who commented, no one was for the project. It seemed like a coordinated effort by the GV Society - they all had prepared typed statements they read. None of the commissioners were for the project either - they all said it was too tall. One commissioner said that even though the site was zoned for 35' height he would oppose a 35' building. After the meeting, I passed by the GV Society and one of the commissioners yucking it up in the garage. I get the public's concern that they do not want to set a precedent for future developments within GV, but this is at the edge. They were concerned that the architecture doesn't match GV. Several didn't want the noise of a rooftop bar even though the developer specifically stated in the presentation that there is no roof top bar. They weren't there to listen, just categorically oppose new development. They don't want GV to turn into the Short North or the "suburban office park" Children's Hospital is building. Some were opposed to new commercial development within GV. Some didn't want to loose the parking lot. My sense it that they want to build a dome over GV and pump it full of formaldehyde like Lenin in his tomb.

The first tower crane is being erected this morning. It’s the one at 14th and Pearl.

I’ve heard Convention Center Drive will close on October 7th.

A photo I snapped in 1988 I think driving east on 70. The county tower is under construction as is the 500 S Front building on the right side of the photo.

There was concern about losing children in those holes.... I like the gardens myself!

^In fairness to the Protect Old North group, they did help save the Pavey block on campus. The original plan demolished most of the buildings. Driving by you don't even notice the 5 story apartment building behind the historic homes. The group's protests help create a better project in my opinion. But yeah, there's the one guy just going off on that page.

According to Street View, there actually is a tree in that location although the real tree is considerably smaller. It also looks like a Tree-of-Heaven, a junk tree.

Honestly, I don't find it that impressive.

^North High School will become the home of Dominion Middle School next year.

^You will know when construction begins in earnest when Convention Center Drive is closed to traffic.

That's a cute, short crane!

Looks like there's sealant missing between the two wall panels. Maybe the letters were the wrong font? Or maybe the sign was vandalized.

^I think it's a punch list item. I noticed all the letters were removed Friday.

There are a few out of town developers here in Columbus and that's a good thing - they will force locals to up their game. The 11 story proposed at King and High - St. Louis developer The Uncommon at 7th and High - Chicago developer 230 E. Long - Denver developer 7 story proposed at Mound & Grant - Detroit developer Scioto Peninsula - Some by an Indy developer I'm sure I'm missing a few.

The former SBX building at 14th and High was demolished today.

Nice to see more construction. One point of clarification: they are working with the Harrison West Society, not VVC. This site is not in Victorian Village.
